It occurred to him why riding a horse might in fact prove useful. This woman was obviously wounded, and lacking medical knowledge, he was at a loss. If she had walked this far she might make it past the borders, but doubt plagued him. Worried, he looked skyward, silently begging his Spirit for assistance. When a rush of warm air passed his face his worries lessened some. Donoma would find help. For now, though, it was up to him.
Anatole closed the distance between them and lifted his hands. Palm-up, it was a gesture of openness, suggesting he was not out to harm her. Then she coughed blood and he imagined her to be falling; he made as if to aid her but held back, reminding himself to move slowly. The last thing he needed after being assaulted by a tree was for some half-crazed woman to bite his face off.
“AniWaya,” he explained, and cautiously moved closer to her. “We have people that can help you.” Then, gingerly, he reached for her arm. “Please,” Anatole added. “I won’t let anyone else hurt you.” It was a child’s promise, but one that resonated from the dark man. Gemma and Tayui had proved to him that there were real monsters in the world, and he could not allow them to enter this place again.
