The First Light of Day

The pain filled howl drew Tharin up. He'd never been around when pups had been born before. They had been silent affairs to keep from drawing predators, and those who knew where the birth was happening kept everyone else away. Tharin hadn't had much interest in getting himself bit by a pregnant female, so he hadn't gone. The howl that went through was something else though. Fayne? Why was she howling like that? Were the pups injured? Was she injured? Remembering Fayne's fears he broke into a run, crossing the land as quickly as he could to arrive.

The cries from inside were painful to listen in on. He paced on the edge of it, seeing that Noah was there as well. Daring to come closer he whined. What's wrong? He could smell blood and other fluids thick in the den. That set him straight soon enough. Pups! His tail wagged with delight before another painful cry reached him. Was it supposed to be that painful? Growling helplessly he backed up, wondering what he was supposed to do to help. He could keep anyone else from crowding her. Deciding that was the best plan Tharin positioned himself to watch over Noah and Fayne, ready to bite anyone that attempted to get too close.
