Skoll was glad that the child hadn’t changed direction and run off, instead managing to skid to a halt, white and coffee paws pressed into the gunk that splattered the older canine’s chest and legs. The little one was like a bellows as he tried to regain his breath, though Skoll’s breathing was calm as always, the chase not tiring him out. He glanced down in concern at the small male, watching Pascal look around to test the validity of his words about the vanished mud monster, and cracked a smile at the breathy whisper.
“Really,” the young man confirmed, the lie coming easily; Pascal’d looked just as frightened as any mud monster would, and too cute to really frighten more than a beetle. He knew this was the way of children, though, and boys liked to be scary and formidable. He wondered if, in time, Pascal really would get there and be able to protect the Court with the high pitched growl that burst from his chest.
Skoll jumped slightly at the noise then grinned sheepishly at the child. “We’re safe now; you really gave them something to think about,” he praised. “And now we can have fun in the mud!” He jumped forward then, one foreleg stretching out on either side of the boy, bouncing his chin down between Pascal’s ears and hoping to transfer some of his mud over as well as give him another excuse to run away and around.
