Vesper, as always, was patrolling.
She could almost admit to herself by this point that it was an addiction, if she hadn’t oh-so-recently gotten a promotion that justified the excess work. In all honesty, though, it was probably just a way to cope with the shock of the unexpected title dropped on her. Not one month ago she’d been formally accepted into the coyote clan, and now she was a Praetorian, one of the Triumvirate just below the leaders themselves.
The scarred coyote frowned, flicking her ears back, and changed her course as she came to the end of her route in the woods, angling toward the mansion and eventually the caverns. Her head remained hunched, her eyes focused on the ground before her, though it was out of a desire not to bump into anyone more than actual submission.
That was something else that bothered her, besides her newness to Inferni: the lack of bonds with her comrades. It’d gotten a lot better since she became a Vigiles, though, and she’d even bonded with Helotes (though only under the influence of a gratuitous amount of alcohol). She knew she’d have to try harder, especially because the one outside friend she’d dreamed of seeing again had left Crimson Dreams and Nova Scotia. That’d only been a stupid crush, though, and there were plenty of girls in Inferni to fill the hole she wouldn’t quite admit was there after Blind’s departure. Like the pretty tawny coyote who’d been Praetorian before her…
There was a sudden thunder, a vibration through the ground, and the small coywolf glanced up, perplexed, before a giant skull-faced horse from hell came barreling toward her. She let out a strangled cry she would not be proud of later, jumping back out of the way as the horse cantered by, before screaming out a “Fuck!” and pressing herself to the ground, fur sticking out in different directions. She fucking hated horses.
