indent The first time Gabriel had killed a wolf, he had been a boy. The stranger had slaughtered his adoptive-mother in cold blood, over food. The drought had left them all half-starved, half-mad. He had not been aware of the conscious thought to kill, only that it had to happen. They had fought, but it was the hybrid who had won. Back when, he had not held the same shape he did now—his body was still small, still more coyote-like. It had been that blood which won the day, the blood of his mother and her family that had drugged him on and forced that revenge. Since then, he had stopped considering personalities and the weight of lives. If someone was his opponent, if someone was his obstacle, if someone was his target, he would kill them.

indent Teeth connected with his skin, broke through the flesh, and it was now Storm’s leader who had drawn first blood. Gabriel snarled viciously, twisting his head and aiming for the throat. The other hand moved in time, aiming for an opening—it found one in the larger male’s arm, and sunk in like a vice. Vaguely, he was aware of Faolin on his back, but she was gone, then she was screaming. Gabriel did not hear; his head was buzzing as though a thousand hornets were in his skull. Kaena’s voice was still screaming, still urging him on. This was how it had to be.
