we'd left our love in our summer skin

Most days were good, peaceful, but today everything was going wrong. Naniko had eventually given up with all of it, keeping track of all of them at once. They all wanted to go to different places...some were hungry, some said they felt sick...a few were thirsty. She had realized a long time ago that she couldn't please everyone, so today she had taken off into the packlands with the two calmer pups, Haven and Mati, to find some peace. These two were usually satisfied with just following her around, doing whatever she felt like doing. Today she was thinking about going to the lake so that she could show them about fishing and about water safety.

Naniko would have liked to bring all four of them with her, but lately Brooklyn had been fighting with Mati and Salem had taken to running off by himself without a word. So those two had stayed behind with Anu. Most days the little ones were awake before the sun had even come up, so they had gone a good distance on their walk so far. It was a fairly calm morning. There were a few species of birds that hadn't migrated yet and they sat above them in the colorful trees, peeping and peering down at the three different-colored wolves. Naniko stood out most of all, with her completely white pelt, then copper Haven, and then the dark brown Mati.

They were taking a good pace overall, between the pups running along ahead to look at something or the pups staying behind to sniff at something. They'd be at their destination in no time.
