we'd left our love in our summer skin

Urma lay down in the grass, rolling around in it to cool off. Her generous coat gathered the morning dew, collecting it generously and keeping it against her skin. She breathed deeply, trying to calm down her rapid heartbeat, hoping her exhausted condition would keep her hectic thoughts at bay. She stopped mid-way through a roll, her back against the earth, absorbing its early fragrance, her amber eyes looking at the sky she had learned to believe was the home of her ancestors. She wished she could go up there, just for a while, in case time passed quicker there, in case pain hurt less than it did here, in case memories got lost somewhere in between the two. She was tired, all of a sudden, as if she hadn't run just a few times around the area, as if she had run all the way from here to where Shadowed Sun used to be ten times. Her limbs ached, her paws prickled, her heart yearned for a little bit of understanding.

And then she rolled over on her belly and sniffed the air, feeling the by now familiar scent of Naniko. She sat up, trying to coax her body to meet her leader, and maybe talk to her about everything. She had hidden for so long that it only now occurred to her how stranded she was from the rest of her pack, how little she knew of what had happened. Her thoughts had all focused on Pilot. He was missing, and no one seemed to know anything, not that she had really asked. Her heart was torn between a deep sense of having been purposefully left behind and betrayed, and the quiet, deep fear that something that made her feel uneasy had somehow snatched him away. She spent her days and her nights wandering, sleeplessly, aimlessly, what had happened.

She quickened her pace and emerged from a clump of trees near the lake, a few metres away from where Naniko and two of her pups were. She reclined to her haunches, pushing back her inexplicable fatigue, and trying to put a smile on her face. "Hello, Naniko," she said, her voice betraying her anxieties.
