Though his mother's tail was keeping his little nose warm, Beppe had been compelled to wander, once again. Perhaps it was something that was in his blood, something that he had no control over, but he hadn't known his father too well and that kept a damper on what he could blame on his genes. His thoughts were somewhere else than where he could put the blame, though, and he hummed a little song as he romped through the snow. This climate made it feel almost as if it was a dream. They never had snow like this before, not until that great vessel had lurched against a new continent and they had hurried off like little rats. Here it was up to his shoulders, and he carved a little path as he peered through the fog. Fog -- there was something familiar. He had got his share of that in the north.

After what seemed like a century of dampened silence, he heard hurried footsteps behind him. He turned quickly, expecting some strange mythical creature to have risen out of the snow in order to guide him on an adventure of some sort. Unfortunately, it wasn't so; it was his mother, and her mouth was full of angry words. Beppe averted his gaze. After a moment with his mouth closed, the boy looked up to his mother gently and replied, "Sì, Mamma. Ma guardi questo tempo!" He lifted his paw and dropped it down onto a patch of untouched snow, sending little chunks of it outwards.
