seeing myself this way, I am a monster I believe

There was a distinct period of dead time behind her eyes—they seemed to turn off, go hollow, even though her body was still functioning. She worked mechanically with the hide, cutting flesh and smelling the iron and musk and seeing nothing. When her eyes turned up, the color was back, however unsteady it was. She swallowed the urge to vomit and smiled.

“The fire scattered all of us. I left not long after you.” A chunk of her pale hair tumbled into her face, obscuring one eye and offering here a frail bit of humanity. She wanted to ask her sister a thousand things. What happened to you? Did you know what she did? Where did you go? Have you seen her? She wanted to know this above all else. She wanted to find that woman, if she was still alive. She had waited forever. Four years was long enough.

She said nothing. She could not break her thoughts away, even though they sought to drown her.
