A genuine smile threatened to break her gloomy façade. She hated when he did that; he was just like their father. Fyodor had always taken problems so lightly, as if life in general was just one big joke. Well, it wasn’t! And she really disliked it when her facial muscles just gave in to his compliments. It was annoying. Her own body was betraying her, damn it. She was supposed to be sad. This was no time to smile. For a moment, Lexey considered pinching herself. She deserved the punishment. But instead, she simply pursed her lips together. It would keep smiles and laughs at bay, at least for the time being.

Anyone else would’ve probably seen Sankor’s last statement as sweet and considerate. But not Alexey. She highly doubted they would get them back now. It had been weeks, nearly a month! Everyone was looking for them. Every single pack had been alerted of their disappearance and still no one had given them any feedback. “No, don’t lie,” she said weakly, her voice turning into a pathetic whimper. Never in her life had she felt so miserable. And it did not please her to have Sankor watch her become an emotional wreck.

“Go away, please.” The words she’d uttered requested one thing, but her mind and body ached for comfort. She wanted to be held, just like Fyodor had done numerous times in the past. Daddy’s little girl needed him. So why wasn’t he there?
