Between focusing on the task at hand and thinking about his pack mates, Honoré barely had time to pay attention to his surroundings. He was about to hang a bucket onto the spout he’d just applied to the second red maple when a female voice rang out, distracting him from his work. His initial reaction was to abruptly twist his body in her direction and let a frown settle on his forehead. His fingers clutched the bucket possessively as he gave the girl a cautious look. He watched her for a moment, chestnut-colored eyes shamelessly examining her from head to toe.

Who was she? He took the time to inhale deeply, taking in her scent and analyzing it to see if she could’ve been a pack mate of his. Nope. Did she want to steal his sap? He certainly couldn’t let that happen! It was his! Honoré remembered how he’d gotten into a pretty nasty argument with another wolf over maple nectar back when he’d lived in northern Québec; he hadn’t given in then and he wasn’t going to give in now just because the stranger standing before him was a girl. No way! The ebony femme would just have to wait her turn if she wanted some syrup of her own.

It hadn’t really occurred to him that she did not pose a threat to his work until she questioned his actions. It was only then that he relaxed a little bit, finishing up with the tree he’d been working on by finally hanging the damned bucket. Turning his attention back to the dark lady, the Québécois finally provided an answer to her inquiry. “Moé?” he asked, pointing to himself. “I’m making du sirop… I mean, syrup. Maple syrup. You know what it is?” he continued, hoping the female would finally catch on. “Good food.” He was rubbing his tummy now, demonstrating just how yummy the amber liquid really was.
