Alexey almost retracted her paw when the Lillium yelped in surprise. She hadn’t expected such a reation out of him. Had she done something wrong? Time went by, and his body relaxed. Her paw remained on top of his, in an attempt to bring him back to reality. When he finally turned to face her, the Caregiver did not back away. They were mere inches from each other. Her gaze met his, and for the first time, she saw no animosity in his eyes of blue. They were pure, like a newborn child’s. And for a fleeting moment, she saw Conor in his gaze.

It was an illusion, she knew that much. The monster was asleep for now, and he would surely come back. Being this close to him was dangerous; it was like tempting the devil. She did her best to hide her fear, choosing to believe in the goodness of his heart. Her ears drooped when he provided a reply to her question. She listened intently, and her eyes widened when he revealed that he couldn’t breathe. “Haku, snap out of it!” she exclaimed, not liking the tone of his voice. But it was too late. His eyes rolled back into his head as if he was about to lose consciousness, and Lexey braced herself for the worst. Her hands moved to his arms and she tightened her grip on him. “Wake up!” she whined, vigorously shaking him back and forth. He was officially giving her the creeps.
