The sky is full of holes today

She was growing quickly, but it looked as if the young girl would only reach a medium size. She wasn't large for a pup of her age, but wasn't small either--she was quite average. Her size was probably the only thing about her that could be described in that way, average, though; the pup had a vivacious and very curious personality. Addison did look a little funny now in her puppy stage, her coat a mixture of browns, creams, and blacks that would later turn to a dark, dusky brown as she got older and she had eyes that were mismatched. One blue, and one gold.

It was mid-morning, and clouds covered up most of the sky above. She had been stalking the grounds of Phoenix Valley ever since dawn, looking for more squirrels or birds that she could catch. She'd been practicing ever since her lesson with Jefferson, and had been getting better and better at it. Each time that she did catch something, though, she always released it like he had taught her. The male hadn't wanted to show her the actual killing process back then, because she'd still been rather young, and now she had it fixed in her head that she should release the prey after she finally caught it.

Today she had her eye on a little gopher. The thing had been practically taunting the young female, running from hole to hole, and she was growing frustrated with it. Every time she got close enough to pounce it saw her, and ran into the hole before she could wrap her teeth or paws around it. Addison growled and frowned as it disappeared once more, looking down into the hole. Maybe she would dig it out! She started working at the top of the hole, small paws working hard at removing the dirt. She worked at it for a little while before she saw it, a little shape out of the corner of her eye. It was him! With another growl she took off after the animal, white tipped tail a blur as she ran.

It was then that it happened, the sudden snapping sound. For a few seconds she didn't know what was happening, only that she wasn't moving any more. Then the pain came, a harsh pounding in her paw. She lay on the ground, panting, stopped by the thing that had made the snapping sound. It was an old, rusted hunter's trap that had been left there for the purpose of catching animals for the humans to eat or sell, and it had its teeth dug almost completely through her little paw. There wasn't much blood, as the metal was providing adequate pressure, but the pain was immeasurable. She let out a cry, a loud howl. What was happening?! What was this thing that had caught her? Why was it hurting her?!
