___ It was true that Apollo had never really cared much for his father when he had been younger. Over the past few months, though, the young Haddix had gotten to know Pilot in more ways than just as a father. The former alpha was the happiest he had ever been since Apollo was born. He was glad that Pilot had something new to live for, but still wondered about his old life before the fire. Apollo had gone to Halcyon so that he might catch a glimpse of that past life – the times when Pilot had really been happy and in love.

___ The land cascading away from the mountains was barren, even a year after the fire had raged. It was impossible to visualize where any of the former packs had been, as the area was dotted with ferns and small shrubs. Even if it had retained the appearance of what it once had been, the boy of course would have never known. Either way, the sight was humbling. It was strange for him to think that he and his brother had been born the same night the fire had claimed the entire area.

___ He began his descent down the opposite side, intending to head back towards drifter bay, where La Chateau was situated by the shoreline. A hand brushed at the ripped jeans, wiping away the dirt that had gathered. His other clothes had been abandoned back at his home, aside from the ever present bandana. Apollo had even left the backpack, though wished he had brought merely so he could have filled one of the bottles of water inside. The climb had made him thirsty.

___ His gait slowed, mismatched eyes looking for the voice. For a moment he thought the words had been directed at him, but soon knew otherwise. Further down the mountain side Apollo could now see the form of a dress-clad coyote. She wasn’t looking in his direction, so he assumed she must have not spotted him yet. "You alright?" He called to her, hands held at his side cautiously as he made his way further down.
