Hemming caught Asha's smile and returned it. Soon enough, though, the group of wolves that were on four legs was off, and the Gatlvska found himself being pulled along with them. Their excitement, evident in their howls and yips, seeped into him and he found that he was making these noises as well. It had been so long since the wolf had been on all four legs and running in a group, with all the swiftness of a bird on the wing. Adrenaline pushed his legs further and faster than he thought he could go, feeding on the enthusiasm of his tribesmates.

Remembering how Ember had selected the animals they had gone after not too long ago, Hemming kept his eyes on one of the older animals, a limp in his thunderous gait. Following the lead of the other chasers, he separated the beast from the rest, guiding it towards where the others, on two legs, were waiting. If it wasn't for all the electricity running through his veins, the thrill of the chase, Hemming might have felt bad about taking part in the murdering of the animal. There were pups that needed to eat, though, and that justified it beyond the qualms that shook him.
