for diavo, harrow road landfill! :] (384)

Picking his way precariously through the garbage, head down and nose to the dirt, Jael was scouting out the terrain to his home once again. He’d silently pledged to memorize the area and what lay beyond, determined to at least prove somewhat useful to the clan in any way possible. Seagulls screamed and swooped against the clouds above, landing on the human’s junk and peering with wary, beady eyes at the lurking predator. Snapping his fangs at one as it landed too close, he watched, amused, as it took flight in terror, sending the rest into the sky from it’s frenzied cries. Rain wasn’t falling for a change, but the heavens above were a flat, dull white that continued to block out the needed sunshine. The hybrid snorted softly.

Spying movement out of the corner of his eye, he was instantly alert, muscles tensing along his sleek body. Bursting into action, jaws snapped around the body of the rat—it’s scream filling the air and momentarily overpowering the cries of the birds as its life was cut short in the predator’s jaws. At least he’d found a snack in this wasteland. Draining the rodent of its life-giving blood, the corpse was tossed aside with a flick of his head, landing beside the ruin of a former automobile. Curiosity overtook the young male and he stepped toward the rusted shell, leaning onto his back legs to peer into the interior. Leaping, he moved within and crawled into the driver’s seat. Weight shifted and a sudden, screeching siren overpowered his senses. Yelping in alarm, Jael twisted violently, searching for the source. The second he moved the sound stopped. Confused and on edge, hackles raised, the wolf peered around the car, noting the steering wheel wedged against his frame.

Tenderly, one paw lifted to prod the thing, only to once again bring to life the ear-splitting sound. Immediately, his paw was removed and he leapt into the backseat, hoping not to find anymore frightening noises. Sniffing curiously around, he pushed against the unhinged backdoor, but didn’t exit. Turning around and around to test the seat’s leathery surface with his paws, the youth lay himself across the backseat and closed his eyes, aiming to take a nap for a little while before continuing his exploration of the area.
