lol, thanks. :] (359)

Rolling onto his side, legs tucked against his belly, the hybrid dozed within the car’s backseat. Just as sleep began to finally overtake him, the boy was jerked from his rest by a loud, ear-shattering sound that sent every hair on his body on end. Again, leaping to his feet with a dull snarl, fiery eyes peered through the car windows for the source. Nothing was in sight. Huffing softly, Jael slid fluidly from within the car, deciding this place was far too loud for his senses to even attempt a nap any longer. Long wolf’s legs carried him smoothly and swiftly across the terrain, but he hadn’t gone far before a new scent reached his nose—curious enough to come to his attention through the naturally pungent odors of the wasteland. It was a young coyote, more than likely belonging to Inferni. Jael couldn’t honestly say he’d encountered every member of the clan quite yet, but the girl seemed to be alone—he couldn’t smell any other clan members or coyotes in the vicinity. Regardless of this area belonging to Inferni, it still wasn’t safe for a child to be alone anywhere this close to wolf territory.

Wolves trespassed boldly into their territory, disregarding their obviously marked borders and had no qualms about snatching up young coyotes and murdering them without a second thought. It simply meant less competition for the wolves, annihilating their smaller cousins especially before they even had the chance to grow into a full, hunting predator. Spotting the sandy-coated girl, Jael crept in close, keeping his posture loose and unimposing so as not to frighten her. Not only was he obviously a stranger to the girl, he knew he looked more like a wolf than coyote, and he knew nothing of her circumstances and fears. For all he knew she already hated wolves and would classify him as one on sight. “Hey!” he called out calmly, voice loud enough to be heard over the shrieking of seagulls, but not enough to startle the child into bolting. “Shouldn’t someone be watching you?” he inquired, stopping his forward movement at a good enough distance from the little girl.
