Someday Never Comes

Sorry it’s so short. They couldn’t have picked a worse day to move the board. XD

Phoenix often liked to fantasize about one of his children some day inheriting his crown. Of course, he knew that the mantle of alpha was not passed on my heredity but by worthiness. But it was still a nice thought, having a respectable legacy to pass on to his prodigy. All seven of his children were good wolves, but he wondered just who would someday develop the skills and wisdom to lead a pack. Would it be the intellectual Moon, the energetic Sun, the caring Ember, the fiery Sadira-child Firefly? Or perhaps it would even be one of the less likely ones, such as the distant Icarus or even the quiet follower Kansas, who stood before him right now? The future was unsure, but full of promise.

The patriarch smiled encouragingly for his son as he followed him outside. Really, Phoenix could count with one paw the number of harmful intruders that had found their way to Storm. But one could never be too careful, especially with the more precious members of the pack needing protection. ”Don’t worry, son. Most trouble-makers are smart enough not t’mess with a big pack like ours,” Phoenix reassured the boy. ”But we hafta make sure. It’s our duty to protect the people we love.” Protect, and teach. Phoenix loved passing on his knowledge to the younger generation, especially when they carried his name and/or blood.
