Paws moved as fast as they could go. He felt as if he would never have the fluid gait his mother had, or the stature and stride his father possessed. Honor was all paws and legs that felt too long and yet weren’t long enough to make his stride any wider. He needed to will them into movement, and work with their toes to keep him level and balanced. But they worked, and the pup was sure he was running. Chastity was better at it, just as Mamaidh, though not as perfect as their dam. Still, her coyote build might have made it easier and the female pup more streamline and less bulk that his wolf appearance created in the little male. Honor kept pace, his eyes on the ground more then in the air. He watched for roots and rocks, they tripped him up in the past and the boy had learned from that mistake. The black and white male would hurtle himself over the raised tree root, when it came his way, and for a brief moment he had forgotten what it was they were running after while he played his new game.

Her voice called his name and the brother looked to her with a remembered seriousness. Of course, the magic could not be forgotten and certainly not lost. Forgotten things could be remembered, but what was lost might never be found. Their paws did not stop, and the boy padded around roots and rocks without looking down. His duel hued eyes stayed on his sister as she spoke. No, he thought. The words did not come, but the fear was spoken in his eyes and features. It was then that he looked to the sky, unable to see the small wings dancing beyond the colored leaves. He couldn’t hear them, not beyond the sound of his paws against the fallen leaves. Their scent would not come to his nose, though he might not have recognized it if it had. They were flying away. Away from them and to where Honor couldn’t guess.

The boy was going tired, small pup sized body unable to continue. He didn’t want to give up, but the pain in his legs had crept up into his chest and he didn’t know how. “No!” He spoke, finally, though his heavy breaths. He didn’t want them to fly away. Would they come back? They felt like Chastity, and like Mamaidh. A constant. They were not the same as their sire, coming and going. They had been there since the beginning, and now so suddenly they would go?
