Rurik had yet to recognize the language that the little one was speaking; he was familiar with the Romantic languages especially, but the one he was most lacking in was Italian—he knew French and Spanish fluently, but he knew next to nothing of the third major Romantic language. The word pantaloni was identifiable, but he did not know what annerire meant, though it sounded familiar to him. Scrunching his nose, the Russian tilted his head to the side. "Noir? Black?" he asked, picking the French word that sounded most similar. The languages were quite different, to be certain—French pronunciation was not something Rurik would ever master.

Liliya knew less of what Emma was saying than her father; she could speak only Russian and her broken form of English, so she quieted back down, for the moment. "A tall, black wolf with blue pants?" the Russian asked, looking to the younger canine for confirmation. "What is your name? I will look for him and tell him his daughter seeks him," the wolf said with a smile. "Does you come across the vater?" Liliya attempted, her heavily accented voice attempting to inquire if Emma had come across the ocean. Rurik glanced at his daughter and gave her an encouraging smile, liking her use of English even if she was less comfortable with the language.
