His teeth sunk in and held tight, a wolfish attack that he would later lose as he realized its flaw. As desperately as he clung on, the gray wolf managed to shake him off as he turned, and with the smell of alcohol and Alaine’s shriek in his ears, Gabriel was entirely too disoriented. He landed on his back, hard, and saw a mass of white lights and swirling stars flood his vision. He heard something crash near him, and scrambled frantically, trying to find his feet amongst the broken glass and fire water that managed to stink up the bowels of the ship. Then, to Gabriel’s horror, Alaine stayed where she was. Between the tall legs of the pirate, he could see her pale face and her shining necklace, and then things went from bad to worse.
The pirate was after her! Horrified, Gabriel pulled all of his muscles together and rushed after him, but it was too late! He had started screaming for the rest of his pirate companions, and oh no they were going to come up from below and swashbuckler them or make them walk the plank or something else horrible that pirates did. RUN! Gabriel barked again, and then, with the element of surprise on his side, leapt at the gray and white pirate’s tail. Maybe he could stall him long enough for Alaine to make it off the ship, because if she didn’t then he would just feel awful. There was no sense in his sudden violence, but Gabriel was fighting to keep his friend safe, and he would not allow some stinky, tattooed pirate to go and ruin his adventure. And man, what a story this would make! No one was going to believe it, but he was certain it would be an incredible tale.
Provided, of course, he lived to tell it.
