In Character

There was a nothing but the heredity and the instinct of a fighter driving him now. Gabriel intended to hold off the pirate long enough to let Alaine get away. He was aware of her only in the distant part of his mind, which was focused now on the gray and white wolf whose scent and presence was overwhelming his senses. Vodka and heavy musk, things that made him think of his father even though they were different. He held on as long as he could, but his puppy teeth were not strong enough for him to hold on as the werewolf began shaking his body and running up to the upper decks.

As they reached sunlight, Gabriel’s jaws finally gave into the pressure that he could not hold, and he flew off. His small body tumbled through the air, and hit the wooden deck of the ship hard. It was slick with saltwater and he skidded far away from the staggering, drunk Russian, and now tried to push himself up. The abuse was unfamiliar, but he had play fought with his siblings before and knew he was no weakling. With a great effort, the tawny boy made it to his feet, and found that he was alone on deck. Alaine must have made it off, and knowing that his time was running short, Gabriel saw the werewolf blocking his way out and scrambled around the side of the boat. There had to be somewhere else to go! There! Another small pile of boxes (all containing empty bottles) was his new way out, which Gabriel scrambled to climb quickly. He made it to the top of the ship and feeling triumphant, let out a loud, laughing bark. That was, of course, what made him lose his balance on the rocking waves and fall off and into the water.

Almost instantly, panic hit. Gabriel had been warned since the day of his birth about the dangers of the ocean, and how it would take him and his siblings out to drown if they let it. Furiously, he kicked at the water, his brain taking over and forcing him to swim and swim as hard as he could. The waves were pushing him to shore, away from the ship, and he could just make out the screaming Russian over their crashing voices. Finally, the waves tossed him onto shore, and there Gabriel struggled to pull his tiny body out of the water and onto the sand. He was beyond exhausted, and panting heavily, but he needed to get away from here and make sure his friend was all right.

Coughing sea water out of his mouth, Gabriel began to move, and nearly tripped over something in the sand. As he looked down, he was amazed to find the shiny necklace that he had discovered not so long ago. Unwilling to leave the treasure behind after working so hard to find it, and now doubly worried that something had happened to Alaine, Gabriel picked the golden treasure up in his mouth and began running as quickly as he could (even though his muscles were burning battery acid and his lung felt like they were going to collapse) towards the forest. When he finally found her scent, relief washed over him.

When he finally spotted the collie girl, soaking wet and looking as bedraggled as he did, Gabriel actually sighed in relief and slowed his pace, dragging his feet and the necklace in his mouth with great effort. For everything that they had gone through, the two adventurers deserved to have proof of their deeds displayed for the world to see.
