These days, Kaena’s preaching in their youth still seemed to hold some truth to it. He had never believed her outright, even though he had seen the truth in carcasses spread in the sand. There was no doubt a contradiction in her words and in her actions, but there had never been a time when he had considered she had hated wolves without reason. Gabriel did not call himself a wolf because he could not stand to feel like one of them, and because he would not accept himself as such after seeing the wickedness done by their kind. He knew he was not a coyote, but he had chosen his side and made himself a home with it. He was a hybrid, a coy-wolf, and he knew that no matter how much he despised that part of his blood, it had made him whole and given him the weight and the power he needed. With two hundred pounds at his disposal, the Aquila was formidable, and this was why he had managed to keep the clan not only together, but make it prosper.

Her comment made a faint smile break across his face, knowing it was true. The pull of Inferni was incessant, like a magnet, and perhaps the only place that they would ever belong. Scintilla had considered Gabriel something special, but his place was not with them. Few of their rank understood what Gabriel was trying to do—fewer still understood that he obeyed a higher power then their vicious then leader, whom likely died in that great fire. It had been the first, and Gabriel certainly did not believe it would be the last. The fire over the mountains had proven this. The Voice was quiet now, but he had no doubt it would call again. His Lord worked in mysterious ways.

She had no child, but it seemed like she might have once known a man as more then a friend, given the way she spoke. Cocking his head doggishly, Gabriel narrowed his eyes, finding her body language all too telling. Either she had tried for them and found no luck, or only desired them but never been able to make such a thing reality. “Probably never found the right guy,” he offered, shrugging and dismissing her concerns as he might idle worry. Given the way their mother was bred, and her children’s record (Ahemait had three children as it stood, and Razekiel a likewise number) , it seemed unlikely that Rikka would ever go without being able to produce children. Medically, he had no idea that things could go wrong, as these were things outside of his knowledge. Gabriel was ignorant to medicine beyond basic anatomy—beyond placing bones and other field combat medicine, he knew only what he had gathered from Corona and his son. “We’ve only got one kid here now, Mason. He’s lucky—he was on his own for months before he found us. Though he’s hardly a kid anymore,” Gabriel added, unsure of their youngest member’s exact age, but able to read it through his body. Mason barely looked like a child.
