Halo continued to move. And with her, Hybrid moved in quiet tandem. For each step she took, Hybrid surveyed her body – not her steps – to keep time with her. As Hybrid found her pace, he created his own, sometimes stepping quicker or slower to see how she would react. Sometimes, he would pause in an attempt to goad her into attacking him. Everything he did was deliberate to demonstrate the different techniques she could use in a fight. Use your surroundings: take note of rocky or uneven ground. Use your peripherals: follow the opponent, not their legs. And most importantly, use your gut: don’t overthink, or you’ll underfight. Hybrid tended to follow the last rule quite well, following his instincts and disregarding full thought. Such complex brain exercises were better suited to the leaders, such as Gabriel, or his eyes, Anselm.

She moved quickly. Hybrid could see her movement, but he was uncertain of where she would attack. Hybrid put his weight on his front legs, pushing off with his back legs and whipping himself around to face her with his front. As he moved his back legs, she caught him with her teeth, and Hybrid yelped involuntarily. He had not been expecting that. He snarled in reply, but instead of pushing her off with his bared fangs, she had only moved closer. He did not like this: she was growing bold. For him, now, this was bad. For him later, as a warrior and Hydra, this was good. She was learning.

Now, however, he did not appreciate this. Hybrid tried to recoil, but Halo’s attack was successful. Her teeth closed on scarred skin; his face was already becoming rather marred with scars and gashes. Halo’s momentum threw Hybrid off, and he twisted his head to ensure that he did not expose his neck to her. He tried to twist his head underneath her muzzle and snapped at her neck, trying to bite the sensitive flesh of her neck.
