In Character

It was not surprising that of the two, Vieira was the first to greet him. Gabriel was pleased that she looked well—though he was not sure what well was for her, and only assumed her thin and small appearance was what was expected. She had no outstanding marks on her body, and she had not yet come to him, but he was glad to see she managed to greet him without cowering as she had before. Of course, he had not come intending to raise all hell. His purpose today was much simpler, and without such fury behind it. Even now, he felt a slight amount of guilt having confronted her so crossly. It had not been she who was at fault, and by all accounts, neither was his mother. This was something that even Gabriel didn’t fully know how to deal with, but he figured as long as the younger canine was safe (well fed and cared for) it couldn’t be all that bad.

“Vieira,” he greeted her, though did not move forward at the invitation. If his mother was sleeping, he did not want to further disturb her, given all that had recently occurred. He remembered Talitha sleeping often, and having been told (either by her mother or by Corona, he couldn’t remember) that sleep was required for the healing process to move forward. With war upon them, he needed Kaena on her feet and ready for battle, not wallowing in self pity. So, if she needed sleep, she needed sleep. “I actually came for help,” he said, eyeing up the sandy coyote as one might a racehorse. “If she’s resting I’ll take you instead.” After all, even though she was a slave, Vieira would be able to help with the hunting process. That was something that everyone had learned to do, after all, right?
