In Character

Kai had been left alone after joining this new pack, and spent the next few minutes exploring the area immediately after the borders. He was finding that the area was a combination of thick forests and wide, open areas—places that no doubt bore flowers in the summer, given the dull and dry stalks his feet were kicking up as he went. There was certainly a spring in his step; Kai was elated! He had come out of the unknown are behind him, scarred and lacking any sort of purpose, and now he was in a place he intended to call home, following a strong man and knowing for certain he would be able to find both his purpose and greatness in this place. War made heroes, and it could make a hero out of exiled, useless Kai…who no longer considered his family a part of his world, and made the resolve to erase them from memory. The scars on his haunches could be related to anything. A bear, maybe…yeah, they could be from a bear. Big bad Kai managed to escape from a bear. Or maybe some wolf that looked at him wrong and ended up dead. Something cool like that, yeah.

Of course, his first night had been unpleasant. Unfamiliar with the area Kai had eventually found a small abandoned fox den and forced his still lanky body into it. His body just managed to fit, and he ended up falling asleep and dreaming of nothing. The cold did not manage to break into his small sleeping space, and until he woke the next morning he was not at all bothered by it. Of course, once he managed to crawl out into the snow he was greeted with a blast of freezing wind and winced, baby blue eyes shut against it and he let out a faint whine. Though this cold was not entirely unfamiliar, it was still unpleasant to wake to. The arctic fur his father had left him was enough to keep his body warm, and now Kai was intend on finding himself breakfast. Shaking the sleep from his coat he made his way back to the wide opened area, deciding that it would be the best place to find something small and fast. He could not take down a deer on his own, and he knew this fact was something that made him less then an outstanding hunter. Rabbits were more his style, because they were easy for him to take down in one snap as opposed to wearing himself out chasing a long legged deer that could, no doubt, get out of his reach long before he caught it. Though stamina was no problem for the young wolf, he intended to keep his strength up for the necessary fights that came when chasing off coyotes from their kills (which were no doubt scavenged, given their natures). Besides, if it came down to a coyote eating or Kai eating, well, there was no option at all.

For the next half an hour Kai stalked around the open area, following rabbit tracks. There were well over a dozen, and he was working on tracking down the freshest one of these. There was a youthful impatience in his walk, something that was apparent given the fact he was so hungry. Kai needed food, and he needed to eat soon. Luckily, soon was this morning. As he crunched down on the cold snow, a large hare suddenly sprang out of the drift, and began rushing away from him. Without hesitation the timber wolf took off after it, large paws spread wide in order to carry him over the snow, rushing towards the frightened animal. Their chase did not last long; Kai sprang onto the scrambling animal and pinned it, jaws clamping down with a sudden ferocity that had not displayed itself in his body before. Blood rushed into his mouth, and doggishly, the wolf shook his head, loving the sensation of bone and cartilage cracking under his grip. When he was satisfied with this, he began tearing the fur from the skin, ripping this off of meat and looking for the hot organs that he intended to consume. He ate quickly, and ate everything he could, leaving behind only scraps of fur. With the taste of victory in his mouth, Kai cleaned off his face and made his way away from the murder scene.

His legs took him away from the field, moving deeper into Dahlia de Mai’s territory. As he went, the scents became more varied; there were well over a dozen unique scents here, but none quite as prominent as Haku’s. Deciding that his best bet might be to move towards where the mass of these originated from, the tawny wolf picked up his pace to a steady trot, nearing the inner sanctum of the Dahlian territory.
