There were a half dozen and more stories about the area Gabriel knew only as Scintilla, and the lands beyond it. Of these places, the last had been the most devastating—wolves and coyotes had lost their lives long before the Hand of God had come down from on high and slaughtered the rest of them. Between the ruins that had been long since covered, or the stench of death in the air, there was no word less then cursed to describe SoCal. Even returning home, with the fire still high at his back, Gabriel had crossed lands that had been so sickening he had refused to stop while passing them.

An ocean full of dead, white eyed fish, was enough to remind him of why he had done what he had done. Now too, he was facing a curse, but one that lived in a man and not the earth. Like all curses, though, he would burn out the blight if that was what it took. A part of him, secretly, wished it would. Snake’s voice cut through his thoughts, it’s flat, rough tone enough to drag him away from the fire. Both of Gabriel’s amber eyes focused on the boy, pupils widening to swallow the remaining light around them. “You did,” the Aquila confirmed. “Take care, Snake.” With one short nod of dismissal, the coy-wolf had turned and begun off himself, heading towards the borders to take up a night patrol.
