into the abyss

It wasn't fair. Well, actually, it was perfectly fair - he just wasn't enjoying it. Time after time he would find prey, and he would soundlessly track it, trace its steps or flight pattern. And time after time, he would lose it. Why, he had no idea; he was not giving himself away, he was not acting too soon or being hasty; as far as he was concerned, he was doing everything just perfect. Nonetheless, it was as though all of the ravens, rabbits and squirrels in the area were just far too determined to evade him. It was frustrating, but he would not let it show; he made sure that his eyes were still focused on whatever game appeared, and when he lost it, he made no quarrel. Although he would occasionally let out a frustrated growl, nothing more would show of his irritation.

At his age, the boy was becoming large. His frame was heightening, becoming lanky and slowly filling out; muscle was beginning to form on his limbs. His coat, light and warm in colour, was darkening; within the cinnamon, layers of black were spreading. His pelt was becoming dull, and would eventually become the darker, richer hue that it would remain.

I see you... A rabbit poked its head out of its hole, beady eyes searching the snow. The small being crept out, imprints left behind, and darted away with energy it did not seem to previously possess, judging by its groggy, hesitant start. The boy considered following it, but did not; it wasn't worth the effort.

Midnight colored paws moved though the lands, hunting...what else could he do, borders where her area, she was more likely to be there, and that meant a higher chance for the two of them to meet and have to talk...talk in a civil tone to each other. He didn't want that, he wanted to be away from her, far away. No reason to talk, no reason to play nice. Lucifer knew though with the change of weather, the food would be returning to the lands, and he didn't *need* go to out of the lands, to go hunting...but he would have to. If he wanted to stay away from her.

He thought he would be nice, check on her, see if she was okay, make sure she was alive and see if she needed any thing. He was close to telling her it was over, he wanted out. Though ever time he thought he had gathered the guts, something happen, and never able to tell her how he feels.

Watching the youth look at the rabbit and then pass it up, he was lost...then laughed, children didn't understand that if there was food there, kill it, kill it and eat it. Never know when that would be your last meal. Stepping closer, he forced a cough. "Hey there chap, that was a pretty good lookin' meal you passed up"

The boy's eyes watched the rabbit flee, and was about to continue on when someone coughed to make themselves known. His head jerked up instantly, searching for the other wolf. He then processed what the older male had said, smiling sheepishly, although it was only half-hearted.

I wouldn't have been able to catch it, he explained. I've lost a lot of prey today; nothing wants me to catch it. And it sucked. No matter how hard he tried, no matter how fast he ran, or how quiet he was, they always got away. And then they seemed to laugh at him. Although it was a childish thought — animals could not be so crude, they ran purely on instinct — but nonetheless, it seemed that they were laughing. Mocking him and his lack of luck — or skill, although he would not admit such.

Lucifer loved the game of hunt, there was alway a loop to throw into the game, sometime you lost some times you won. It was a thrill ride the whole time. Watching the pup, Lucifer knew that no child of Fatin would ever go with out a meal as so long as they stay in the lands of 'Souls. Lucifer cocked his head to the child with both of his pale colored eyes tuned onto him. Some how he wasn't buy the story, he was sure that Fatin had taken him out hunting more then once. "Is it a lack of skill or a lack of trying child?" He knew it sounded hard, and harsh, he closed his eyes for a split second, feeling sorry for the pup. "Merit, your not always going to be able to depend upon your mother for food."

Skill, the boy answered instantly, almost becoming offended by the older male's words. I've been trying all morning. Or, maybe it's lack of luck? He offered the last because, on several previous dates, he had been able to find his own meals perfectly well. As far as he was concerned, he could hunt just fine.

The male then added how his mother would not always hunt for him. He suppressed the want to say 'well, duh!', but instead said, Yeah, I know that. Actually, he had not seen much of his mother, lately. She must have been busy, doing adult things.

Lucifer rolled his ear back hearing the child, his voice was full of the same rudeness that he had at that age, with a thump of his tail the male puffed his chest out and let the air back out, letting it collapse. This child was not going to work with the pack at this rate, the male grunted standing up. Lucifer was sure luck had some part to play with it, but the will to work and hunt had a lot to do with the "luck" of the hunt.

"Okay child, if it's Luck your lacking, then you shouldn't have an issue with digging a hole, now should you?"

The male wanted to see the child work in the pack, learn it's skills that needed, hunting, scouting and being kind to another. This pup was still young, he was sure and he hoped that with passing time that this child would learn every thing.
