The summer months were right around the corner, and the days were growing warmer, and warmer with each passing sun. Today was no exception, and it left her feeling warm, and stuffy under her cloak of fur. Almost too warm. She wanted to believe it was the weather and not the anxiety of being here again burning through her veins like fire. Her mind was wrapped around what would happen in the next few hours, and if she would even come out the same woman. Moreover, she was entwined around the thought of seeing Gabriel; her fingers twitched as she remembered tracing her hands across every atypical blemish, and memorizing every groove that cut into his solid form. Even now, she could feel him pressed against her small form with his body ablaze with passion. A uncomfortable shudder raced up and down her spine, leaving her bereft. Despite the balmy air, she wrapped her arms around her chest and frowned. God willing, she would make it through this. It was His will that brought her back to seek forgiveness. He did not speak to her now; he never did, but Jezebel was determined. Gabriel was deserving of so much more than an empty bed, and shadows of what once could be.

She walked towards the borders with her head held high, but her heart sinking with every step. The smell of him was everywhere. And the closer she came to the line of bleached skulls, the more she felt suffocated by his presence. In the days predating this afternoon, she had worked herself up into a slight paranoia, becoming more fearful of his reaction to her return, but even more so the possibility of being rejected. It was not so much the thought of not being able to return to Inferni, but rather never seeing him again. Ever. Eli was a distant thought in her mind when she came to the conclusion that Gabriel was one of the only real friends she held dear, their romantic relationship aside. But by delaying her original course of action these long months, Jezebel knew she was the only one to blame if things went sour.

Reaching for the cross, she pressed it between her fingers before encasing it a fist. Her lips brushed against her thumb as she whispered a hoarse plea, "God, grant me mercy." Drawing away from her prayer, she lifted her ruby eyes to stare beyond the borders, into the looming soul of Inferni. The anxiety was eating at her now, released from the haphazard confines to wreak havoc on her body. Her ears fell back against the obsidian waves of her hair and nestled between the tresses. She could not be certain if Gabriel was near with his scent clenching around her neck like his own strong fingers, but she knew the clan would not allow strangers at their borders to linger long without proper interrogation. A song echoed out from her lips when she lifted her nose to the canopy, calling for her former companions.

Her border patrols had increased once more, and the hybrid found herself devoting more time to looping about their perimeter. She expected the joiners to the clan to come in waves—now that Sepirah and Mkhai had appeared in their midst, others might soon follow—perhaps even more of her grandchildren would come home to Inferni and blossom here. The silver-shaded hybrid was enthralled with this thought—no matter how many times her children reproduced, it never grew old. The Lykoi family was expanding steadily, growing larger with each passing generation. There were yet to be any great grandchildren for the silvery coyote, but even so, she knew it would not be long. Perhaps they already existed, unbeknownst to her—the silver-shaded coyote could not possibly know. She had so many grandchildren, some of which she had not had contact with, well... ever. Ahemait's children were completely unknown to her, Rachias's children were complete strangers. These missing pieces ached at her, but as others filtered into Inferni's midst, some of that ache began to subside, though there was no replacing family.

The sound of a woman's light and silvery howl drew the coyote's attention, her scarred head lifting back, her mismatched ears twitching in the slightly breeze. Of course she did not recognize this voice; it had been many months since she had seen Jezebel, and the coyote woman did not recall the sound of her voice. However, as the silver-shaded coyote drew closer, recognition dawned on her as she began to detect the faint tendrils of the other woman's scent hanging in the air. A mental picture of Jezebel arose—she was a dark-furred coyote, patchy with paler hints along her fur, witness to Gabriel's earlier times. Trotting forward quickly, the silvery coyote tracked her down within a few moments, coming across the other canine after a few moments. There was a vague smile across her lips, but this was no family—this one's return was not a thing to be rejoiced as it would have been if she carried Lykoi blood. Even so, it had been no great thing, Jezebel's departure, and now at least she had returned. “So you've come back,” the coyote said, sounding neither elated nor disappointed. “Where did you go?” the canine asked, wishing to satisfy her own curiosity.

As the announcement of her presence was carried away on the breeze, she was left feeling almost lonely in the wake. There was trepidation in her ruby gaze as she looked past the staked skulls, into the heart of what was once her home. Who was still there, she wondered. Gabriel, of course, but who else still lived in the beating heart of the coyote clan? Kaena? Ryan? The kids? She let her gaze fall away to the ground beneath her feet, where her frown cracked at the sight of the lush green life. Her hand, which was still clutched around the simple cross, loosened a bit when she bent her legs to kneel on the spring grass, and a small smile played across her lips as she brushed her free hand over the budding flora. Earlier she had passed up some wildflowers, and after this was all over, for better or worse, she had half a mind to return to them for some peace of mind. Come summer, it would all turn to brush again; brittle and browned by the relentless summer sun.

The sound of foot fall pulled her from her idle thoughts, and back into her anxious state of mind. She quickly pushed herself to her feet, and stood waiting with the cross hiding behind her closed hand again. The Inferni's scent began to paint a vague picture in her mind, starting first with the basics, before lending a good deal of clarity to her memory. Her heart fluttered nervously as she came to the realization, just as Kaena stepped out from the borders in all her wizened glory. The ashen woman vividly remembered the older woman, and was almost pleased to see that she hadn't changed much during her absence. But only a moment was spared to the initial look, and her eyes were quickly diverted out of respect for their respective ranks (or lack thereof in Jezebel's case).

Her black tipped ears twitched once when Kaena addressed her, and her eyes closed as she took it all in. It was a question she was prepared for, but she wasn't altogether comfortable with. For a spell she toyed with the idea of making something up, but that was promptly shot down. Besides, that was weeks ago. She was ready for this, and she knew it. Sullying herself with a breath of air, she opened her eyes, and replied with a soft voice, "I'm sorry, Kaena. I left the night Gabriel and I... well." She drew another unsteady breath, "I didn't know what to do. I felt so exposed. I hadn't felt like that in years—ever, really. It was frightening." She admitted. In truth, Jezebel still wasn't sure what she would do when she found him again. Her chin fell a bit further in defeat. "I had to come back. I want to make amends, somehow. Even if it can't be fixed, I want to try." This is my only home, she added silently. It was this silence she embraced, waiting for Kaena to absorb it all, as pitiful as her explanation was.

We can go on a little bit from here or just OOCly assume Kae filled her in on stuff. ^_^ Either way. Big Grin

In Character

The silver-shaded woman did not know what had transpired between this canine and Gabriel, and it caused the brow over her remaining good eye to lift for just an instant, though she did not interrupt to immediately inquire—the black and white canine before her had balked at some of the darker memories she shared with Gabriel, and Kaena did not wish to pry into the woman's sore spots so soon. Instead, she offered an understanding nod as the sable-hued woman continued to speak. The Centurion's eye drew over the bi-colored woman once more. She did not look as though she had been wandering for a terribly long time, but then the hybrid assumed some took to the road better than others. As the once-Infernian had made the journey from whatever far-reaching places Gabriel had seen in her youth, she would have easily believed Jezebel was amongst those who adapted easily to the traveler's lifestyle.

“That's what matters, then,” the coyote said, in response to Jezebel's final words. Leaving was never a thing to be celebrated, but the scarred woman of all people knew that sometimes it simply could not be helped. “Sometimes live takes you away. In the end, so long as you come back...” she said, trailing off and ending the statement with a shrug, a smile twisting half of her lips upward before they fell once more, and she twisted her head, indicating the other canine ought to enter. “It's been a while that you've been gone, and you've missed a lot,” the silver-shaded hybrid began. Jezebel had been a good hand with some things relative to healing, if Kaena remembered correctly—she would have been good to have during the war.

As quickly as the hour had come, sooner had it passed.

Jezebel had expected anger, or disappointment. But instead she was met with an understanding nod, and the reassurance that the choice she made in coming back was the right one. He had said as much, but hearing it from her old friend lent her a sturdy foundation to stand on. The tension that was previously knotting in her stomach was slowly unwinding, and for a moment she felt the immense weight of her guild lift from her shoulders. She drew a breath, a full one this time, while her tipped ears lifted from her skull to a more casual position. Of course, she was still submissive to the older woman in stance and present demeanor, but it was out of respect for both her rank, and the benevolence she had imparted on Jezebel.

A smile drew a gentle line across her features, and she nodded in reverence to Kaena's admission. It was clear to her now that she belonged here, Gabriel or no. Though he still ruled, and his presence was literally everywhere, she could live in peace here. Maybe someday they could reconcile. Today, tomorrow, next year, or never. If she had a home, she could cope, and move on. She would serve, and Inferni would provide. It was the way of things.

The two-toned woman stepped forward to oblige the Centurion's offer, and followed her past the skulls into Inferni. She strode in step beside Kaena, and listened to her with a turned ear as she took in the familiar sights, and smells of her home. The territory was just as she remembered it, with the ocean glittering in the distance. But from here she could not see the devastation from the arson, and she was entirely unaware of the second conflict between Dahlia de Mai, and the clan. However, the older woman's words gave her pause, and she felt compelled to ask.
"Mm. No trouble, I hope?" She inquired with a curious glance, and a raised brow.

In another life, Kaena might have been angry with deserters—indeed, she often contemplated how newcomers seemed given to use the clan, staking a claim in it for a few months to recover their strength, only to move on before providing anything in turn to Inferni. However, she was not so blind as to miss the integral importance of these newcomers—for every four or five who failed, if only one showed long-term promise, if only one eventually returned to serve the clan well, it was worth it. Her own children were met with rejoicing and happiness, of course, but the silver-shaded woman did not share such a bond with Jezebel, and so she was spared the celebratory measures Kaena might have taken if a Lykoi had showed up on these borders today. There was promise in Jezebel yet, however, and the silvery matron saw in her mind the fantastical and lovely prospects of the distant future between this returning face and her own son—she was always on the look-out to expand the family, and she would foster it and tend to it as well as any other delicate garden.

“Enough trouble to last us a while, I hope,” the hybrid said, hesitant a moment. Enough knew of what had transgressed between her and Haku—she was never eager to share these details, and she assumed Jezebel would be able to discern the true origin of the war, if she chose to investigate it closely enough. Gabriel would be the one to inform her, the hybrid thought. “There was war between Inferni and Dahlia de Mai. It's passed now, but from the start of the new year to the beginnings of spring, we were hostile with them. Lost a few good coyotes, too.” the coyote said, lamenting those they'd lost. “Things are better now, but you would do well to watch your back outside of the territory. Dahlia's former alpha is still out there, and he is dangerous.” The silver-shaded coyote knew this by harsh experience, of course.

The Lykoi's were a powerful family, even back when Gabriel and she had been at war in SoCal all those years ago. He spoke of Kaena on occasion (more than the rest of the family, at least), the matriarchal head of the family, and his mother respectively. She was a powerful woman, as Jezebel had come to learn during her previous stay with Inferni, and moreover she seemed to grasp the very essence of the clan itself. The ashen woman knew that the older coyote was well entwined with the history of the clan, and was once a leader, but as for how integrated her beliefs and family was into the heart of it, she could not possibly know just yet. Her previous stay had gained her a bit of knowledge of it all, but it was minimal at best. As she walked, waiting for the Centurion's answer, Jezebel wondered if she would someday achieve such success.

The reply she received was surprising, to say the least. Gabriel had told her of the first conflict between the clan, and Dahlia, but she assumed that they had finally settled their differences. She was not fool enough to assume that all the tensions would subside, and everyone would be shitting rainbows, and making peace circles, but she'd at least hoped that they would manage to avoid another war. Jezebel regarded Kaena (or rather, the gray coyote's chin) with a frown, and her gaze became strained at the mention of their losses. There was no stopping the "what if's" after that; what if she had been here? Could she have saved them, or were they beyond the reach of the clan when they died? Again she was in the company of her familiar friend, guilt, but this time it was entirely unfounded. Even if she had been here during the war, there was no telling if she could have done any good.

Reaching up to finger the cross out of habit, she nodded, "It sounds like you've all filled your quota this year. Or a good three, or four years." She said, though the humor that might have otherwise been there was all but lost in her voice, "I'm sorry for your losses. It is never easy to lose your friends to war. Especially conflicts your side didn't start. But I'm glad to hear it is mostly over, and thank you for the warning." Jezebel remarked softly. "If there is anyone still in need of medical attention, I'd like to offer my assistance, if I may." She added.

Perhaps war was always destined to chase Inferni and its coyotes. Maybe they courted it; the silver-shaded hybrid did not know how much of the prior wars had truly been their fault. The coyote woman had not been present for the war with Clouded Tears nor the first Dahlian war, but in her recollection there were now four bloody and violent wars connected with her clan. One had been settled peacefully, according to Merrick Phire, a once-member of the clan; she knew herself how the Aremys war had been settled. Inferni had reclaimed what was theirs and then some. The first Dahlian war had not ended with the expected outcome, she assumed—Haku survived, and he had been the one to instigate then. He was also the culprit of this war, as she very well knew.

“Hopefully,” the coyote woman said, and she meant this sincerely. She had been lucky to lose canines outside of her family alone—for a while, Samael was assumed to be dead, but with the arrival of his children, Kaena had discovered he was alive. Perhaps her son was destined to hear the very same phrase she had heard so many times: “I thought you were dead.” Even so, she lamented the loss of Hezekiah and Nala especially, the others among them—it was never good to lose members of the clan, ever, and Kaena did not look lightly upon their deaths. “Thank you,” she said sincerely, and she considered their wounded. Rikka had already moved on to Cour des Miracles, and her arm was mostly healed. “I think we're patched up now, honestly. Since you've last been here, though—there's a new addition behind the D'Neville mansion. Got a greenhouse for plants and growing, you know?” the hybrid suggested. She did not know if Jezebel possessed skills with plants—but if she needed herbs or anything for her healing abilities, Kaena wished to give her direction on where to go.
