Under This Apple Tree

Kansas

The Dreamer wandered through the orchard, blue eyes looking at the new buds. They were small, having just lost their white and pink blossoms, and told of the fruit that they would give in the next season. It was warmer early, well at least there had been a few warm days followed by a few chilled mornings. She hoped that the young apples would not suffer because of the cold spells. But there was so little that could be done if a frost did creep upon the lands and leave the weaklings damaged. She remembered, vaguely, of times in her youth. Her father grew all sorts of fruit and flowers, masterfully, and would always know when a frost was about to appear. He used to tell her it was in the Earth, it would whisper to him. He knew by the wind, the trees and the flowers. They all spoke if what was to come, and then they would build the fires. Bright lights that dotted the orchard’s rows. Fires that Anu had feared, for they would either save the crop or kill it. The tragedy had happened, once, when the wind was too much and the fire took to it like a drifting leaf. They lost too many good, aged trees. Their fruit and wisdom eaten away. Anu would not be able to build that fires that would warm these tree’s fruitlings, not like this.

The four legged creature walked down the long row, towards the Manor with her tail hung low. She was tired, but her mind yearned to keep moving forward. There was more fear in her now then ever before, more then when she had been hurt by Haku, more when she had heard that he was the alpha of Dahlia. More then when the barn had collapsed. There was a new, vivid fear that ruled her actions.

Savina always calmed her, rooted her back to earth and made it easy for her to believe all the things that she needed to know. She had to believe that things would go smoothly, that she would not loose the joy that she held inside, that she could carry them to term and until they where ready to face this world. The thought that she would be a mother, once more and to her own flesh and blood, caused light tears to well in her eyes. But she held them back, thoughts focused on the trees. Anu lay beneath the first tree that sat in the long row, a view of the Manor and of the rest of the garden in sight. It was so very pleasant. The sun was warm, but the shadow beneath the tree brought her great relief. Nose in the air she caught the Spring pollen scent, and she let her eyes close slightly. Thoughts of sweet apples, and small paws dancing in her mind.

That post was beautiful. *sobs* 300+

The Colonel relished Springtime for the light and life it awakened. He had fared well this winter, keeping close to home and to his family where he had always felt safest, always felt the strongest sense of belonging. Even though the snowy months were as dark and unpleasant as they were year after year, the creamy-furred boy had not felt the same sadness. He owed this to his family, to Crimson Dreams. They kept him hopeful that new and happy things were always around the corner. Springtime reinforced this hope he had discovered, and amidst this year's blooming and growing, Kansas was the happiest he had ever been.

He had spent the morning since its darkest hour on the porch. Savina and the children were sleeping, and he'd slipped away quietly to allow them ample time to replenish their bodies without disturbance. The Dreamer loved relaxing upon the old mansion's front stoop where he could watch the scenery, witness winter fade into spring. He had paid close attention to the orchard, impatient to see the blossoms become tiny apples, but now they were only partway through their life phase, petals scattered across the grass below. His turquoise pools left the fruit trees to linger elsewhere for a long while, until he was not really looking at anything — he was rather feeling the energy of the sun and its Spring as it warmed his body.

After a measureless span of time (he did not care to keep track), the pale wolf glanced toward the orchard once more, and saw a shape in the shadows of the closest tree. Distinctly canine, the ash and earth fur was distinctly Anu, a picture of serenity as she lay among the fallen petals. Lifting himself up, Kansas left the porch and started toward his Lt. General at an easy lope, closing their distance in a few limber strides. His greeting was first a smile and a swish of his silken tail. Hello, Anu. They had not spoken together in such a long time, but he knew of her joyful condition from Savina. The snowy brute could sense her thoughtfulness, but he could only wonder what was on her mind.

Would she sing to them? Quietly at night when no other would disturb them, would she tell them stories or explain how the good lived and what it was to be honest? Stories of great monsters and brave heroes, tales she had told Haven when he was just a bit older then the ones that live within her. Each would have a lesson to be learned, something that needed to be understood in their later years, things that would shape them into the wolves she would always love. How lucky she was. Though the term had only come after an initial panic and did not exist in her mind now without the fear that something might go wrong, but now she knew it to be nothing more then extraordinary. To some the chance to have a litter was not something so joyous, or remarkable. But for Anu, in her little world, it was a miracle.

The sweet smelling grass was refreshing against her rounded belly, cooled by the low growing tree’s branches. Dandelions littered the green stalks, dashing the landscape with yellow manes and pale cotton balls. The pollen tickled her nose, causing it to twitch. Her breath paused, unsure if she was going to sneeze or not the silver and tan fey wrinkled her snout and waited for the ah’choo. With a squeak the eldest Dreamer sniffled and then laughed lightly as if she had just been the butt of the season’s joke. It’s pleasantries certainly had a few tickling surprises.

Blinking, her bright gaze brought the approaching figure into view and Anu gave the male a welcoming and warm smile. Kansas. She spoke, glad that he had found her in her small orchard oasis. She looked up at him, remembering easily the last time they spoke in depth. It seemed like an eternity had passed since them. Will you sit with me? She asked, hoping that he would concede to the Sun’s warmth and seek the shelter the lush single pointed leaves provided.

The pallid Sadira had always pictured Anu with children surrounding her. Both she and her daughter Mati had the qualities that children loved — he knew this because they reminded him of his father as he perceived him when he was a child. From his eyes he saw that they loved the young ones, and maintained a patience and willingness to show that love for however long was needed. Kansas knew that his own babies adored Anu, for how could they not? He had sensed her longing for children of her own, and was thankful that the chance had been given to her. The brute did not even care to know who the young ones' father was. It was inappropriate for him to want this knowledge and also unimportant: the puppies would have Anu, who would make a wonderful mother as surely as Spring would come.

She did not seem disturbed by his presence. Kansas would have left her in peace the second she asked; that was the extent of his respect for her. Instead, she invited him to join her in her relaxed state beneath the apple tree, not entirely unexpected. He was simply thrilled for time to talk with her. I'd love to. The snowy wolf did not forget his manners in the presence of the esteemed leader, lowering his small ears as he drew closer, slipping into a seated position with his shoulders loose and submissive. He stayed a distance away from her, wishing her to see his simple, reverent awareness of her. His tail curled around his front paws, the longer hairs of silk picking up petals as it swept by. He breathed in the sweet-smelling air, casting a turquoise glance her way and continuing to smile cordially. How are you doing? He stole an innocent glance toward her belly, which was definitely much rounder than was the usual for the small-framed fey.

Life held many joys, so many that it was impossible for one to posses and experience them all. She had never known that this would be one of hers, that she could know what it was to be a creator, such as the Sun she worshiped could be. He did not plant the seeds, and neither did she, but the orb nurtured and gave the warmth and food that they needed. A joy that had once been beyond her reach.

His reply was what Anu had hope and even expected, feeling as if Kansas would also enjoy the shade of the great fruit tree, and believing that she would enjoy her company as much as she did his. Her thoughts lingered so heavily on herself, her unborn pups that Anu thought it selfish. She couldn’t help it, her heart so enthralled and consumed by it. It made her wish that if her litter were to know their father, he would be as kind to them as Kansas was to his own. Anu did not question Gabriel, not without an uneasy strain on her heart. He would, she believed, give them a form of love.

His approach was as docile as ever, and tugged at the instinctual dominance that lay in the workings of her anatomy. They were small fibers and only pushed her ears forward slightly in response to his submission. But as quickly as it passed over her it was gone again, and her features turned soft once more.

Anu would be ignorant to believe that Savina had not bestowed Anu’s news on her mate, and she was more then pleased to allow the world to know it. Well, I suppose. The words came with a smile, Its odd to be so tired. She admitted. Her tail waved behind her, eyes glimmering as she gave her own question. Artemis still being a handful? A bit of a coy smile crossed her face, knowing that the little girl would be mischievous while a youth, at the very least.

crap short.

Kansas understood the slight forward tilt of her ears without consciously noting it. The slender brute responded by keeping his own poise submissive, as he would throughout their time together. He had never had any problem with the wolves who reigned above him in the ranks, as his father had taught him the importance of realizing one's place and being content with it. Having Savina as a mate had formed him into a creature who had no problem accepting his role in the pack. Where he ranked among the Crimson Dreams wolves was the least of his concerns, as he had a young family to focus his attention upon.

A knowing smile graced his lips when she spoke of her tiredness. It was the tell-tale sign of being with child, this exhaustion. He knew it well because of Savina's pregnancies — during both he'd taken up the task of pestering her to sleep, asking if she was tired and if he needed to steer her toward the bedroom. Yeah, puppies are as tiring as they are wonderful, he said, the tip of his tail waving subtly. Artemis is still a little terror... Sweet as can be, though. His silver-furred child was the most rambunctious of any of his children. The Dreamer wondered how this would play into her personality as she aged, where she would channel all of her energy. He was not concerned because he felt that as long as she was surrounded by love (as she would be), her heart would stay pure. What are you going to name them? Kansas couldn't help but ask her this. Surely she would enjoy the excuse to talk about her unborn pups.

so sorry for the delay friend!!

There had never been too many fears of how the pups would act. Of course Anu had fears for them that extended beyond fright that she had ever known. But it mainly surrounded their actual birth, and if she would be able to carry them. She was older, and Anu had once come to be unable to ignore that any longer. Though during this process the eldest Dreamer had come to know what sort of insecurities that age could bring, but she now realized that she wasn’t as old as she had once believed. Those that grew inside were strong, she understood that well and unless some tragedy struck her life they would be delivered into a world of health and safety.

He words of the small mischievous girl made Anu wonder about other dangers now. Of course a curious pup was nothing to be very worried about, the eyes that would watch Artemis were plentiful and keen. And her nature was just as her father descried, honeyed and pure. The blue eyed fey smiled, her eyes closing slightly by its wide motion and spoke with a light tone. I am sure she will grow out of it, Anu paused, her voice growing a bit mischievous herself, only after she gives us all a few grays. The fey wished to see her adoptive daughter Mati interact with the pup. The young woman’s tolerance was deep but not as those with a few more years on the Church fey.

His question made her head tilt slightly, of course Anu had thought of it but there was nothing definite in her mind. Long hours alone had made her whittle the list down to a few, but they all had one thing in common. I have a few ideas, Anu lavished in moments speaking about the litter. they will all be named after trees. Hurriedly she wondered if Kansas would find it odd for her to do so but it fit her so well and so she spoke up with slight haste. For boys I thought of Oak, and Alder. For females, Juniper and Cypress. The last could fit a male as well, but Anu knew not of course how many or what grew inside.

No problem, my dear! 300+

The slender male nodded, his mind drifting somewhere else for a moment. Anu had described Artemis' rambunctious nature in an interesting way, saying that the precious little girl would give them all a few gray hairs. He was deeply touched by the way his leader had spoken, for her words held reassurance that his children had more adults loving them than he sometimes realized. He was filled with a warmth toward the gray lady, and all of the Crimson Dreams wolves, for that matter. He and Savina certainly provided their children with plentiful love and strength, but the little ones had virtuous beings all around them. Anu was on the top of that list.

All the while, the Colonel smiled, to himself and to Anu. He knew the tawny-shaded woman must be nervous about her unborn pups — all first time mothers were, weren't they? Kansas simply hoped that she would remain aware of his and Savina's presence, now and after her children were born. They would be there for their dear friend and her puppies no matter what happened. They would help her keep them safe, as was their unwritten obligation as pack wolves, and as Anu's companions. He had never realized what a wonderful family Crimson Dreams made; never so intensely as he did now.

The slight tilt of the Commander's slim face told him she was perhaps still pondering what she wished to christen her children. He was very eager to hear what she had come up with, though — and when she spoke, his ears swiveled up and toward her. How beautiful, he said softly, thoughtfully. The names of trees. The idea was unique and yet it was spectacular, very fitting of the thoughtful woman. He thought he may have been able to guess she would select such names. I can't wait to meet them.

Anu needed to believe that the Dreaming lands would protect them all. There was much in the world that wished to harm them, and Anu had tasted only a small bit of that hate and evil. She feared that darkness would shadow their lives as it had in the past. It had been over a year since their shift in command, since the fall of one and the abandonment of others. She needed to have faith in those around her, and know that they would help raise her young just as moral-filled and good natured as she planned to do herself. She spoke of Artemis just as she felt for her own young. The pack was nothing without puppies, and their arrival into the world was the most joyous of times for a wolf pack, and she would help any female that wished to raise her young in their walls. It was this belief that made not having a mate tolerable, it made it possible for her to bring her arboreal litter to life.

She grinned at his soft sweet words. Kansas was what Anu felt to be perfection in a male, if such a thing was her desire. He was understanding and sensitive, kind and passionate. It had only taken a moment at their first meeting to understand why Savina had partnered with him. Wistfully Anu hoped that if she had a male pup brewing inside her that he or them would be as morally sound as the pale man before her.

I am excited as well. The tawny female expressed, her smiling falling lightly as she thought of how it would be when they were actually alive and among those that wished so greatly for them to be born. There was a pause, a moment where Anu was lost in her own thoughts as Kansas had seemed just a few moment ago. She had not minded the brief silence, for as she didn't Anu thought that the Sadira canine did not mind the quiet. Kansas, she questioned as her thoughts ranged back to the things that she did not know what she would wish her young to. would you teach them to read? Anu understood that he was one of the packs teachers, and she had seen with him books before. She didn’t know how to, and it was her belief that her need to was not as great as was the need to understand other things. But the pups, they would be yearning for knowledge and it was something that she simply didn’t know how to do.

so sorry about the wait. Sad 300+

Kansas offered his help, yet he had no doubts in Anu's ability to care for her children on her own, even if the little ones weren't to have a father to share their home with. Hopefully, the sire of the gray lady's pups had not hurt her in any way, that there was no issue of abandonment. Of course, this was all business of hers alone, and she did not seem to him to be troubled. Surely whether or not her children had a father was of no importance. He saw clearly in the serenity of her deep blue eyes that she would be a good mother no matter what. The boy knew this because he'd always seen something similar in Savina. Their own offspring would be fine should anything ever happen to him, he was sure.

There was another silence after Anu expressed her own anticipation for her children, but it was not at all awkward. Kansas' closest relations were with the those who could be comfortably silent with him, with whom he shared moments of quiet thoughtfulness. Anu shared what was on her mind after the few moment's lull. Kansas hadn't honestly expected this request from the Commander. He'd never seen her reading and therefore assumed that she didn't find books important. This wasn't offensive to him, for he understood the preference of some to avoid human customs. Still, he was deeply flattered. A wide grin had bloomed upon his dark lips. ...Of course I will, if you want me to, he told her, unable to keep the note of surprise from his voice. I'd be glad to. Oh, but this was exciting. His own pups were just beginning to learn, but there weren't enough easily read books in the Manor. He must make a trip to the library, especially now that there were more prospective readers on the way.

why dont we wrap this one up, have another sometime soon?

Anu had kept her secrets. She had held Gabriel close to her and she knew not why. There was no need to protect him, and yet the female didn’t know how to share him with those closest to her. It had been so beyond her nature that the female would certainly surprise anyone that might know of it. But then, there was no hiding the truth, it showed itself now and would when they were born. Anu would forever remember, and those around her would wonder until their curiosity was driven in another direction. Maybe she waited for that moment, maybe she wanted to be the only one to see their sire in their features, to be the only one to know that their father was a warrior, one made of fire when she taught them the calm of water and the peace of her ancient trees.

The pack would accept it, just as they accept all that sought protection and refuge under their banner. Anu had given so many the chance to start new, had given so many a place to live without fear and now she would take hers. The fey had thought that bringing Colibri to these lands stressed the walls of their protective fortress, but Anu had been wrong. That had been nothing but trivial compared to what she faced now. She had been wrong to place her heart into the hands of an outsider, and it was time to give her trust and place her faith in those that had never let her down.

The world was changing, and Anu did not know in which direction it was headed. In the past it had been unimportant to know the speech of pages, to know the things that humans had left behind. The world was simpler then, it was waking to the sun and falling to the moon. It was breathing, feeding, sharing the company of another and living in those heartwarming moments. This was not the world that Anu knew now and if there was to be another more complex world for her pups to live in she could not shield them from it. They would need this knowledge, need every advantage.

With his acceptance Anu gave a gracious smile. Thank you, I don’t want them to go without because I don’t know how. The female spoke softly.

He had no desire to determine Anu's secrets. Admittedly, he was unable to quell his curiosity; it came naturally, for he respected and loved the agouti wolfess as his leader and friend. He allowed himself only to wonder, but nothing more. Anu deserved her privacy, to welcome her children into the world and enjoy them as her own.

The beauty of their lives was that each individual brought unique talent to the table, to share with others so that as one they grew. Sometimes, he doubted his ability to do this, but he'd never stop trying. In his eyes, the woman before him rained wonderful strengths upon his mate and family, his bright and beloved circle. He was indebted to her for this, and aimed to give in return his loyalty as her inferior. It was the least that he could do.

The restful moments passed the pair of Dreamers with ease, deepening the thrilling, electric sense of joyous things to come.
