Gray Lines on a Wall

It was comforting to hear Mati back up his words and Silas could feel the relief flooding his veins. Though of course there was still a strange tension in the air, perhaps residual from what had just happened, Silas was confident that things would be back to normal as soon as the day was through. And truthfully, Silas was glad that the Inferni princess had come to disrupt their painting. Though the two Infernians didn’t live far from one another, it didn’t seem often that Silas crossed paths with Halo. Usually the young Russian was only lucky enough to catch her form trailing into her room or down the stairs, left with nothing more than her lingering scent. He had been surprised to see her at his bedroom door, but his heart had started racing not because of the apparent danger Mati had seemingly been thrown into, but because those ruby eyes made him weak.

Both woman offered more words and Silas let his pale gaze travel from Halo to Mati who stood just behind him. He wasn’t sure just how to continue; should he and Mati retreat to do their painting, should Silas invite Halo back to watch or to help, should he ask for a moment alone with Halo to talk about things? All of these thoughts tumbled through his head and the Praeses couldn’t be sure what the best option was. Maybe Halo wanted to flee to her room now that Silas wasn’t holding her back, and though he didn’t want to see that, he could understand. But before the boy could make up his mind on what to do, something occurred to him about Mati’s words. He turned to her then, eyes finding the calming lavender gaze of hers, and a smile found his features. "Oh, who ees zhis lucky girl?" Maybe he could generate some light hearted banter, emphasizing the point that there was nothing between him and Mati.

It was time to go. Inferni was only so welcoming as a whole, and though Silas was her friend she felt as if she had worn out her welcome here. His hospitality would not go unappreciated, but she no longer felt it right that she be within the borders of the clan's lands and especially here inside their house. Unfortunately Silas was not the alpha of Inferni, and for all she knew this female outranked him. To some it meant little to be above or below another in pack or clan standings, but Mati knew enough not to test those traditions here. Despite the female's forgiveness and apologies Mati knew she wanted her gone. Gone for good. Though she could not guarantee that for the red-eyed woman, with the mural still needing to be finished, Mati could at least give her this moment alone with the Agata male.

Silas' question was not taken as light hearted, let alone banter. She had put herself out of her comfort zone by coming here, and now she had given them both a secret that she had not been willing to share just moments ago. In the hopes of saving their friendship or whatever more it seemed to be Mati had exposed herself as well as Cambria Marino. and that was not all that she hoped to do for him. Her tone was as even as she could manage and Mati looked from the Silas to his friend and then back again. But I should go, I'm sorry I couldn't have worked on the painting more. Maybe another time. She gave him a smile, forced and lasting only a few seconds. He needed her gone, to mend what might be broken between him and this Halo. Maybe if anything good could come of this it would be exposed feelings, things that they might had hidden from one another was were not forced to face it.

Mati did not regard the female again, and turned to gather her valuables and return home.

Nothing magical happened, but the woman had no expectations. Another step was taken in the opposite direction of the two friends. Silas asked for a name from the wolf, but Halo let the rest of it flow in one ear and out the other. While she was sincerely sorry for fucking up things as she had, she would not reach out to the wolf in any way. In her disturbed view they were separated, closed off by two different worlds. She could understand and to a certain degree accept that the barrier was not impenetrable by some, but to her it was. There were many things she could not share with anyone. She wondered what Silas would think of her if he was to find out that Halo had shot her own sister in cold blood. There were many skeletons in this closet. She would have to make sure no one would get to it.

When the woman announced that she should go, those crimson orbs widened slightly. There was no way she survive alone with the male right now. Her cheeks still burned invisibly with shame. The wolf turned before the Lykoi woman could come up with a reply. The Hydra looked to Silas. ”I have somewhere to be,” she excused herself, voice solid though it felt paper thin in her throat. With haste present in her form again, she turned and attempted to retreat with at least a fragment of her pride remaining. The two canines could do whatever they wanted, because Halo had no intention of returning home to the mansion for many, many hours. She would no doubt regret her swift departure at a later time, but it was the most desirable option to pick in her current state.

Everything dissolved in front of him and it seemed as if Silas was left with nothing. Had it been anyone else, Silas would have been angry with the intruder for ruining his afternoon. However, it had been Halo, so Silas was grateful for the chance to see her again. Still, it seemed now that neither of the women wanted to be with him any longer, and Silas wondered what he had done wrong. Each of them had exposed themselves in different ways and it was now time for them to recover in solitude. Silas couldn’t help to hang his head, disappointed to find that he’d be without company now. His icy gaze regarded the Inferni princess as she dismissed herself, before turning back to his doorway. It seemed as if he had to concentrate too much to get his paws to move beneath him.

He leaned into his door frame after he made it down the hall, focus sweeping over Mati as she collected her things. "I’m sorry about all of zhat, Mati." The mural on his wall was left unfinished, barely even begun, and he wondered if she’d be back to complete it. "I can ezcort you back to zhe borders, ya?" Halo, no doubt, would be gone by then. Silas wouldn’t likely see her for awhile. It always seemed to happened like that; the Inferni princess always so elusive to Silas.

She didn’t look at the other female again, for some reason Mati couldn’t. Quickly she made her way back to Silas’ room and went right to packing her things. She would leave the large can of paint, since she had no real use for it other then his mural. She’d come back to finish it. At least it was what she told herself, to prove that she was not shaken at all by the appearance of the Inferni woman and her sword. She wondered what it would have been like if he had come to her home. There wouldn’t have been any swords; she knew that for sure. His voice cut through any runaway thoughts and she looked up to give a weak smile. Its okay, its getting late. It’ll be dark by the time I get home. She didn’t mind leaving, not after all of that. Of course she wished that she had done more for him, but it was better that she left before anyone else caught her here.

I’d appreciate that. One hand put her brushes in one of her bag while another took the candle off the dresser so that she blow it out and place it beside the others. There was no organization of the deconstruction of the proposed crime scene, but she made a point not to leave anything she truly needed behind. She wrapped the brushes still wet with pain in thick paper, set to find a stream once outside of Inferni so that she could wash them.

It did not take her as long as she thought it would to gather her things and make her way out of his room once again, eyes glancing down the hall towards the female’s room, glad was she didn’t find her lingering. Mati felt a bit foolish for making such a haste exit now that everything was gathered and hanging from her shoulders, but she knew that she would feel better when she was home.

Leaning into the door frame, Silas watched as Mati went to work deconstructing the painting area and packing away her belongings. There wasn’t much to boast of a mural and Silas hoped she’d be back soon to work on it some more. He already knew that every time he looked up to see the skeletal sketch, he’d be reminded of today’s strange events. "True, eet ees a very long valk," he commented in response, before stepping into his room.

He blew away the tiny flames from the few candles he had lit. In their absence some had begun to leak small streams of wax over their sides; as Silas lifted one to hand to Mati he noted the half-circle of wax still present on his bedside table. They packed in silence until it seemed as if Mati had everything she needed. When she rose, Silas followed her out of his room, leaving the door slightly ajar behind them. He too let his icy gaze travel the hallway to Halo’s end, unsure whether her found relief or despair in her absence.

For now, he headed towards the stairs, wanting to push thoughts of the Inferni princess aside while he was still with Mati. He’d have time alone in his room later to mull things over. "Shall I carry somezhing?" He asked Mati as they made their way down the stairwell and towards the front of the mansion. Maybe Mati would feel better once they were out in the open, away from the irrational danger of Halo’s swords.

The whispers she had heard about Inferni had not been true to Mati when she walked into the large house earlier, but they were certainly real as she walked out of them. It was a place to be weary of. But she was thinking too harshly, coming to too many conclusions and moving faster then for her own good. This was not Inferni, Mati had no idea what the rest of the clan was like and would be shocked if she met many of them. What she had just been a part of was something that no one understood, not even Silas, it had nothing to do with the hospitality of the pack and nothing of their rules. His voice broke her thoughts once again, and she gave a small sigh. She was running away from something that had nothing to do with her, running away with her tail between her legs as if the coy-woman was about to come after her with her sword. Thank you. She spoke as she handed him the few articles that she held in her hands. I'm sorry I couldn't work on it more, or even get it started. She didn't look at him, but at the path ahead of them. Hesitating, Mati thought about what next to say. I really didn't mean to mess anything up for you. and her. It was a long walk just to the borders, and she was ashamed at the feeling she had; she didn't want to come back.

Raising a palm, he accepted the things that Mati handed to him. "Sure," he responded softly as they made their way out of the mansion and off towards the borders. The open air around them offered a nice relief, letting the tension disperse some so things didn’t seem so suffocating. Icy gaze traveled towards Mati as they walked, and he found himself shaking his head in response. "Don’t vorry about eet, Mati. Ve can feenish eet some ozher time, ya?" He tried to remain optimistic, but he had to wonder if this encounter had ruined Silas’ chances of ever getting Mati to come back. After all, Halo had reached for her sword.

An ear flattened at her words and the reality of the situation came back to him. Halo had thought he and Mati were and item, and she had acted so severely. He wanted to tell himself this was because she had feelings for him, but Silas knew it was probably just over the simple fact that Mati was a wolf. Inferni had it biases, Silas was well aware. "Eet vasn’t your fault. She’ll get over eet." But would she? Would any of them?

Silas never seemed to loose his even temper, even back in the mansion. Mati could see the confusion and perhaps bits of sadness in his face, but there was no evidence that his feelings had been as jostled as Mati’s or the coy-woman’s. Even as they moved along the path and away from his home he owned the same gentlemanliness that he did when bringing her towards it. His positive attitude was enlightening, his hope comforting. He did not blame her for the reason that the mural would go undone, even though Mati was the one that could not bear another moment inside the house. Definitely. She said, wanting a strong feeling to back up the promise and finding none.

Bigger things had fallen upon she and Cambria, including a building, and still they had seen it through and their relationship come out stronger then before. She hoped that same for Silas, by the looks of things it seemed like he liked her. And if Mati knew anything about a female’s reaction, this Halo liked him just the same. She gave him a small smile, hoping that he was right. She seems to be very… Mati searched for the right word that had no negative connotation, since fierce or intense and frightening were not suitable. passionate. the word was spoken as purple eyes glanced up at his face.

Though his icy gaze was directed at the ground as they walked, Silas let his focus travel to Mati for a moment while she searched for the right word. When that single word fell from parted teeth, Silas’ ears flattened slightly. He was so confused about things and he absolutely hated that. He felt naive and helpless and the only way to really dispel these feelings was to talk to Halo and get the real story behind her actions. Yet, he couldn’t bring himself to face her just yet. He just wasn’t sure what to do.

He offered no verbal response to Mati’s words, merely nodding. The supplies he held in his hand felt light, their presence barely noticeable as he boy’s frame developed a strange sort of numbness. "Cambria, huh?" He finally spoke, raising his focus once again to find Mati. Maybe if he put his mind on other things that would help some. "How long have you… been togezher?" They were drawing closer to the border, but they still had some time to fit in a little more conversation.

The wind fell across their faces, coming from beyond the border of his home. Mati could smell the air free of the scent of Inferni, and it told her that they were gaining on the edge of the clan's lands.

She felt awkward when there was no response to her comment, quite the sign that her words were innocently misinterpreted. Mati swallowed hard, and felt the distance between them widen even though they stood right beside one another. She had not meant to seem sassy, it was a compliment to the coy-woman wasn't it? Her eyes fell away from Silas, her shoulders feeling heavy and her arms already aching from the weight of the bags. But never did her pace slow, and her face fell to watch the ground as Silas' had to concentrate on the path that they walked. As to keep from saying the wrong thing once again, she stayed quiet. At times it was just best to remain silent.

They walked together for a ways, though it likely felt longer then it truly was, before Silas spoke with a question on his tongue. Mati raised her head at the sound of Cambi's name. She wondered if they knew one another. Yeah, The Church female answered, the words riding on an exhale. Mati took a moment to think of when their relationship had moved from being pack mates to friends to something more. Few months. She answered, still looking ahead. The question came only after a momentary pause, Do you know her? She had been worried in the past that she would be discriminated because she was with another female, but it seemed to be the least awkward of truths that had been exposed today and found no energy left or real reason to avoid the subject.

Back when Silas had first arrived in Nova Scotia with his family and the boy had wandered to Crimson Dreams, had Mati known Cambria and been in love then? Ever since he had met Halo that winter day in Inferni, Silas had always had a strange feeling bubbling beneath his chest when he laid eyes on the Inferni princess. He wasn’t quite sure what that feeling was, but all he knew was that it had always been present. Was it possible that it was love? And if so… could love at first sight, true love, and fate really exist? That, of course, he would never know for sure.

"No," he responded softly, having never come across Cambria before. It wasn’t much of a surprise though, since Silas didn’t wander close to Crimson Dreams much. Halifax was usually as far south as he wandered and the war had kept Silas' travels down too. "Are you happy vith her?" Silas asked then, letting his gaze find her form beside him. Though it was slightly strange that Mati was with another girl, Silas wasn’t one to judge. As long as Mati was happy, that was all the really mattered.

It hadn’t always been easy. And it hadn’t always been love. She had known Cambria when she was just a pup, Mati had been there the day she had been born. Of course she had loved her in the way she did all her pack-mates, and their relationship had grown as Mati watched over as a pup and then turned into a friendship as Cambi grew older. Even when it was love, she had yet to realize it and when the notion became apparent to the other female, and when Mati was shown that there was something more then just friendliness there the Church fey hadn’t been able to understand it. But it was because such a thing was a loss of control, it was falling into fate’s hands and letting go of her heart.

Mati only nodded to his response. If he knew her he would understand how incapable she was to the pull the surrounded the chocolate colored woman, how impossible it was to not find her more beautiful then anything else their eyes could hold. His question was unexpected and forward but easy to answer and so Mati did, Yes. She was. There was no hurt, no heart-felt pain when in Cambria’s presence. But, It was always the way it is now, Easy and wonderful we stumbled to where we are. There was a lot of confusion, as you can imagine. Violet eyes looked at him as she said the words, a half smile on her face.

As he listened to Mati’s words, a soft smile found his features. He could imagine the confusion she had felt, though it was obviously nowhere near the same as the confusion Silas felt with Halo. Though the feelings were in the same realm of love, they were far from one another. Even though his own standings in the world of love and relationships were rocky and unknown, he found comfort in hearing of Mati’s success. Maybe in time things would fall into place for him as well.

They were rounding closer to the clan’s borders now and soon it would be time for them to part ways. Silas was unsure whether or not he’d go back to the mansion, still confused about the whole situation. Would Halo still be there, or had she snuck away somewhere else within Inferni’s borders? Silas wasn’t sure whether or not he wanted to find her. "Vell, I am glad to hear zhat you have found yourself someone to be vith. Tell zhis Cambria I say hello." He offered Mati a more broadened smile, hoping it would not only serve as a visual that he had been grateful for her visit, but also as an apology to what had played out. He hoped this wasn’t the last time he’d see her here, for he greatly hoped to see the mural finished one day.

so sorry i missed this reply >< end?

Mati had been hurt in the past, she had felt the small pains of rejection. But how she had felt towards that male of seasons past was nothing compared to the connection that she had with Cambria and thus the memories of those sorrowful days were not hard to look back on and felt to be fairly insignificant. She had come to believe that there was someone out there for everyone, and that they might appear to be different then one might have originally anticipated. Her experience with her own heart had told her that such was the truth when looking at something so unpredictable as love could be.

They found their way to the border, and Mati was beginning to feel much better about the possibility of returning to his clan’s land. His words were sweet, just as Silas had always been to her. He deserved someone that would love him, that could commit to him and spend the rest of their lives together in happiness. It was a dream, a life filled with love and without emotional pain and grief. But she had found that dreaming was better then allowing the possibility of being alone to enter her heart. Yes, it was in her mind and though she had Cambria she knew that there might be a time where she would have to live without her. But her heart would hold tight to the knowledge that it wouldn’t have to be without, that there would not be a crack let alone a break of its fragile shell. As unrealistic as it might be, Mati would just rather be a believer.

Thanks Silas, I will. Mati gave with a soft tone and a small nod. The tall wolfess took hold of what he had been carrying and gave a final, I’ll see you around. The Dreamer gave one last small smile, and then turned to make the long journey home.

FIN~!

When they reached the clan’s borders, Mati reached out to take the things Silas had been carrying for her. His grip loosened and the painting supplies were lifted away, leaving Silas with a strangely useless and empty feeling. With Mati gone, he’d have nothing to do. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to venture back to the mansion, fearing the same hollow feeling would work its way to consume him as his pale eyes swept the area outside of Halo's door. Still, he felt slightly reassured by Mati’s words, even if he was sad to see her go.

The young Russian returned the woman's smile, watching as she turned to head home. Merely a moment passed before the boy called softly, "Have a safe trip home, meess Mati." The boy stood watching for a few more minutes until the young Crimsom Dreams woman was only a vague splash of soft brown in the distance. With a slight sigh escaping past parted teeth, Silas turned to make his way back to the mansion, unsure of how he’d occupy the rest of his night.
