Catcher in the Rye

I love these tables, Erin, they make me want to reread Guardians of Ga'hoole. And GL finding a way to get both of you involved in this x__x

Silvano looked over the stairway, eyes gazing down. It was hard to tell if he was focusing on what he saw before him, or if he was not entirely present in the moment. He shifted on his feet, wooden boards creaking beneath him. Any minute, an adult could come by and scoop him away. Was he supposed to be out of the room? Probably not, but he was sure tired of listening to Artemis try to convince him to try to jump down the stairs. She was loud on his ears and even his whines would not let her ease up. Her attention, miraculously, shifted away from him and he slipped out, dreamy look on his face as the noises eased away. Now he could actually think, if there was much to think about for him yet. All that was in his head were ideas of adventure and flowers.

Still he stared down, wondering what it would be like to slip down the staircase. The stairs were still hard for him, but he figured he could manage. Right? He scooted a bit closer, rump planted firmly onto the ground even as his nose inched over the edge. His little mouth propped open as he looked past his nose downwards. A little whine escaped him as he struggled with the thought of what to do. He could always go back into the room and listen to Artemis do more bragging, and then jumping on him, or he could try to get down the stairs to explore. Just to say to her that he had done it.

Maybe he sat there for more than a few minutes, but then, scrunching his innocent face, he turned around, gradually letting his legs try to reach the first stair. Silvano waggled his rear, trying to get over as far as he could so he could plop down onto the surface of the stair without missing it completely. With an oomph, he landed where he wanted. His small tail wagged as his light green-gray eyes looked over his shoulder at the rest of the staircase. Normally, he stuck to Artemis, but she always got the credit. He wanted his own adventure today.

The artist looked up from the pallet. A heavy sigh escaped her chest, and she gave a deep embedded frown. There were some days where it just didn’t work. Days that she was simply off. The world would not always turn in the direction that she wished, and she was not going with the flow, but swimming up stream and struggling to make even the simplest of brush strokes. She had forced herself for the past hour, and she hated it more then ever. For some reason she couldn’t just put the brush down and take a break. No, that was giving up and giving in to the frustration. She needed to keep going. Mati leaned back on the stool, almost so far that she felt as if she was falling off. Grumbling, and knowing that there was no way to make it right, not today she stood and cleaned her brush.

Her thoughts drifted, and as always they drifted to the girl lived upstairs. She had yet to confess her new feelings to the other fey, and each day it grew harder not to. What was worse was that she couldn’t figure out why she didn’t. Whenever asking herself why not, Mati came up with an answer that was a black and hallow as her feelings for the painting in front of her. She just didn’t know, there was some fear of it all changing perhaps, or a fear that she wouldn’t say it yes though Mati felt that she would agree. It was a big move, though the distance was not far. And still, she thought as she placed the brush back in the jar with the rest, it did not stop her from wanting to see her. Curiosity blooming in her chest as she wondered what she was up to.

With a new purpose and a small pep in her step Mati walked out of her room and to the stairs that would lead her to Cambria’s bedroom. She took them slowly, wandering what her excuse would be for the visit, and even if she needed one. Her brain was so wrapped up in her thoughts that she didn’t even notice the small pup that sat on the top of the steps.

sorry I R slow 300+

Cambria had actually slept in today, her body sprawled out on the bed much longer than was her habit. She wasn't necessarily an early riser, but she was almost always up fairly early in the day. Even if she didn't wake up of her own accord, the sunlight pouring into her room did, or Enzo moving around. Neither of those things had stirred her today, and when her eyes finally did open up it was the afternoon. The girl's mouth opened in a wide yawn and she stretched her arms over her head, back arching. Blinking the sleep out of her eyes she looked around the room. Everything was in its usual place. Enzo sat on the top of his cage, looking at her as she moved around. It was all well and good, but sleeping in her room alone never seemed satisfying anymore. Cambi wanted someone beside her, and not just any someone. Thoughts of Mati filtered into her head effortlessly and she decided to forgo looking at her herb book to go see the Church wolfess.

Throwing off her blanket she sat on the edge of her bed for a moment before standing up and walking over to the door. The mourning dove gave a coo and she paused, turning around and putting fresh seed in his bowl. "Sorry, almost forgot," she apologized sheepishly to the bird. He ruffled his feathers and flapped down to eat his lunch. Seeing as he was taken care of now she exited her room and walked down the hallway. It didn't take long for her to notice Mati walking up the steps and a bright smile light up her face, her tail wagging. There was something else on the stairs though, and it was clear that Mati didn't see it. Cambria saw her little brother sitting precariously on the second step and she cried out "Silvano!" rather shrilly, rushing forward to scoop him up before he fell.

He heard footsteps, interrupting his train of thought. Lifting his nose to the ceiling, the Sadira peered at the woman climbing the stairs. He saw her around and knew who she was, but she did not seem to notice the youngest Sadira boy on the steps. Silvano sucked air into his lungs, holding onto his breath while he waited for Mati to pass by over him, completely unaware. She would take him back and he would lose the chance to romp around on his own. Flattening himself against the step as much as he could, the puppy stifled his whines. If he made no noise, he could pass for a lump of wood on the ground, right? Slowly, the Dreamer edged closer to the end of the second stair, planning on slipping down it once the woman passed by him.

But Silvano yelped suddenly, feeling himself plucked into the air. Oh no! He fell! But, he felt hands around him and his name rang in his ears. He flattened them against his head, shutting his eyes tight. Oh, he was about to get it. Someone saw him and pulled him from the staircase, and yelled to boot. Now they would know where he went. God, who was this insensitive person? Opening an eye a crack, he saw it was Cambria, and he squirmed in her grasp. Maybe she would let go if he moved enough. That sounded logical. "Lemme goooo," he whined, pressing his paws against her arm. "I can do iiiiit."

God, if they would just let him go, he would prove he could watch himself. He was big enough! "Cambi, pleaaaaaaaaaase?" he cried, squirming some more and adding a yelp here and there. "Cambiiii..." Silvano stilled, whining at his older sister. He looked so dejected; he had been caught, plain and simple. "Don't tell Mama..."

sorry for the delay ><;;

The Church wolfess walked up the stairs lightly, her eyes focused on the step before her and then the next that came along. Her keen nose told her of the pup, but before her mind could process it another scent spoke to her. Violet eyes looked upwards, the very woman that Mati hoped to see just happened to be standing at the top of the stairwell. She smiled, a large grin that she couldn’t help but give. It was simply her heart speaking out, same as the tail that waved behind her. Mati was always caught off guard by her beauty, her simple elegance and of course the way she returned the loving gaze.

Words were about to come forth, but all attention was diverted as Cambria looked down. Mati’s eyes followed, and in finding the small pup she too moved into the same hasty action as the little one’s sister. She took the steps quickly and then leaned forward, her hands in place in case the pup did indeed fall as Cambria attempted to steal him away from the dangerous steps. The stairs can be dangerous, Silvano! Mati exclaimed as the older Marino held his squirming body. Small voice rang through the air, pleading and crying for her to let him go. The Dreamer simply looked on and waited for him to calm himself.

The Nanny looked sternly at the puppy, What would your Momma say? with emphasis on the would. Mati looked at the pup, and then glanced up at Cambria. Her hands had found their way to her hips, paint covered fingers holding them firmly. She would hate for the pup to get a bump on his bottom after he tumbled down a few steps, and she was sure that Savina wouldn’t approve what so ever. But of course, they had caught him and all would be right; just as long as he learned his lesson.

Erin fail again :| 300+

As soon as her hands had wrapped securely around her little brother's form she had lifted him and held him close against her chest, instinct dictating she hold him tightly, but not too tightly. Almost instantly he began to squirm and cry for her to let him go. Cambi held him tight, though when he began yelping she worried she might be hurting him. Somewhat panicked eyes looked at Silvano and then up towards Mati. The only expression on the Nanny's face though was one of stern correction. Surely if Mati thought that she were holding him too tight she would step in or tell her so. As she heaved a sigh of relief her brother finally calmed himself and pleaded that he not tell their mother. "I won't tell Mama, as long as you promise not to do this all by yourself until you're bigger. We don't want you to get hurt Silvano." Even if she hadn't been an adventurous pup, she knew that running to tattle on Silvano would only cause problems for their relationship.

Carefully the chocolate girl lowered herself until she was kneeling on the floor. Then her arms placed her small brother back onto the ground. A small smile came to her face as she looked at him. "I'm sure you probably can do it on your own, but would you humor Mati and me and let us watch you? That way if you do slip we'll be right here to catch you and you won't get hurt." Stifling her brother's wishes didn't seem like a good idea, but she wasn't about to let him brave the stairs on his own yet. Maybe letting him do it now would only encourage him to do it more, but somehow she figured no matter what they did he'd try again. It was better if they supervised him the first go round.

DON'T DIE ON ME POST YOU BUMHOLE. Also, I puppy fail :<

Silvano was simply swimming in guilt as he heard the tone of both his sister and Mati. He stared down at Cambria's arms, his own small paws resting on them as the will to fight the grasp was gone. Artemis would have fought for a good five minutes more, he bet. But the young Sadira was not like his older younger sister. Mati's question made him shrink back in his sister's grasp. "She, she would be not happy." He chanced a sidelong glance at the Church woman, but then shot it back to his own limbs before him. "She'd say it's not safe. That I shouldn't do that stuff without someone close by." Or he assumed she would say. Silvano was not sure what his mother would tell him, but she had never caught him trying to get down the stairs on his own.

He was lowered to the ground, and his sister was crouching in front of him. She did not sound as upset or as frightened as she had before, but still concerned. Eyes shining a bit, the young pup looked up at Cambria, ears still flat against his skull. "I won't, Cambi. But I really was okay," he told her, looking toward the stairs. Really, he could have done it. Silvano loved his family, but that was all he knew. So far, there had never been a time for him to be angry or to dislike something they did; Artie could get on his nerves, but she was still his sister, so he loved her regardless. Even now, there was nothing but affection for Cambria. But her offer was certainly nice. He could attempt the stairs and they'd be there in case he slipped a bit too far on the wooden boards. "I can do it, Cambi. I can do it."

Skipping to the edge, he did not hesitate this time. Turning around, he pretty much slipped and fell down the first step with a slight bump. No, he did not wait for his sister to pick him back up, in case he had heard her wrong. But he did accidentally push himself off the next step, and he ended up sliding down, painfully, to a step three or four from the landing. Sitting with his back against the step, he let his lip tremble for a moment, trying not to cry.

Mati could be strict and she knew it. There were many fun things that she could think of and games that she knew how to play. But she was a watcher, and she knew a bad situation when she saw one. No, she would not be happy. Mati spoke, her voice soft and filled with understanding even though she knew that he could have hurt himself. Sometimes it was just the right moment to take the leap and grow up. But Silvano was far too young for any of those revelations. It was time for him to be guided through life, helped and guarded. Her purple eyes looked up at Cambria, knowing that since this was her brother it was more her jurisdiction then Mati’s.

She stood a few steps below, as Cambria stood above her with Silvano at her footpaws. The Nanny took a deep breath and watched as the little pup moved to the edge of the step, she held the air in her lungs unsure of what was about to happen. At least he would not be able to fall to far, if he did stumble down the step. The tall wolfess waited with tension in her muscles. He moved down the first, and then fell down the next. At least it looked like it had been unintentional. Silvano! Mati spoke with worry, watching his face as she moved up to another few steps to see if he was hurt.
