Misery. Dated for 3/4/08.
indent For the past forty-eight hours, the possibility of losing his mind had seemed very real. This was due to the drastic change of events that had occurred in such a short span of time. He hadn’t gotten a chance to sit back, to step away from himself, and actually consider the fact things had been ripped up from around him. He barely knew himself anymore. There were no more constants. When he had first come here, his eldest son had found him. Gabriel looked so different, and had it not been for his eyes, he might have been a stranger. They had spoken briefly, as distant relatives might. Ahren had become a grandfather—he had offered his congratulations, knowing that Gabriel would not accept more. The hybrid had trailed off into the dusk, leaving the four year old very much alone.
indent The city was empty, a ghost town. Under his feet the concrete and asphalt was cold and lifeless. There was no rain, no snow, and no stars. A faint and constant wind offered no comfort. The blonde sat on the curb, leaned forward, and lit up a cigarette. Remarkably, he began to smile, and spoke between his teeth. “More matter and less art,” he said to the wind, exhaling smoke into the dark night sky.
