Rio had yet to venture beyond the northern border of Phoenix Valley. She never had any reason to, as most of her loved ones resided in the packs to the South — Haven in Cour des Miracles, Mati in Crimson Dreams. On this afternoon, the beaming sunlight shone with such power and vibrancy that the sable girl felt under her very skin, and she longed to take advantage of it. The past few days had brought nothing but rain, with very few breaths of sunny weather between storms. She couldn't possibly let this day go to waste; she would make the best of it.

Before noon had arrived, Rio was already beyond the northern dividing line of her pack's territory, into a pristine forest that she had learned was known as the Dampwoods. Every leaf, rock, and stream was aglow with the sun's light, a luminous spectacle very befitting of early summer. She could almost feel the energy of the plants as they grew, hungry for the sun's life-giving rays after being quenched by days of rainfall.

The small wolfess had traveled along a haphazard path of her own creation, a smile in place even as she panted heavily in the heat of the sun. Two hours had passed before the Dampwoods began to thin, the land morphing gradually — but not so much that she didn't notice it. A strange scent began to permeate the air, and the adolescent could sense that she was leaving the forest for something entirely different.

The edge of the forest gave way to a plain, covered in tall grass, scattered with large boulders well into the distance. She could see tall sticks jutting from the earth, but she was not close enough to see what they were yet. As she neared them, the sooty canine become more and more unsettled. Each stake held a bone-white object at its top, bleached bright by countless months of exposure blazing sun. Her footsteps slowed, jaws parting in shock as she realized what she was looking at. For several moments, all she could do was stare, taken by both wonder and horror. What kind of creature would create this?

They were the skulls of wolves.

OOC: Enky is gonna make this a short thread lol

Rio wasn’t the only one soaking in the beauty of the day, although he liked the rain, he liked the sun almost as much. It was nice to be dry for a little while, and it reminded him of Egypt where it was always nice and warm, while here, it was a bit cold for his taste. That mattered little to him. He was content for now, he’d found his sister and soon he’d see his brothers, although one was in Inferni already, he was just busy to go find him. For now he was admiring the poled skulls. It was the first time he’d been out this way, or he’d have visited this place more often. He made a note to come back again. He smiled to himself, his tell tale coyote smile, lipped along his long snout. He sniffed the air, it was an interesting smell indeed, it wasn’t of death but of after death, after decay, of (although he didn’t know it) calcium bleached bones in the bright sun. He made a mental note to ask what happened with these wolves, maybe they trespassed, wondering if he’d find a way to put one up here. He knew he would eventually.

That was when he saw something dark moving along the land, it was a good distance away, but he knew it wasn’t a part of the pack. He moved, blending in with the grass with his grey brown and black mixed coat. He would find out who this was, and give judgment if they belong here or not. Once he got close enough he could see that it was a wolf, which meant one thing: Trespasser. He didn’t know how the clan dealt with them, but he was sure he knew how he may deal with this one… maybe he’d get a head on a pole sooner than he thought. A growl came from his throat.

You do not belong here WOLF

The last word was spit out as though he’d stepped in something gross and unclean, he was still crouching in the grass, hiding from the wolf, his red eyes staring, to see how long it would take her to realize where he was hiding. He liked to play with his prey.

The skulls were the most frightening things Rio had ever seen. She was completely frozen to her place, stomach souring with a sickness she had never felt before. Death was a concept she still didn't understand, not even close. The adolescent knew nothing of it, for it had never touched her life — it lay in wait like a hungry beast at the edges of her consciousness, and today it stirred.

Entranced by the horrifying scene of the heads on poles, the skinny femme tried not to picture what had happened to those wolves, tried not to see their heads being brutally removed from their necks. Her mind was full of red, and it was making her nauseous. The young woman, consumed by this atrocity, forgot all about her adventure in the sunny, beautiful Dampwoods just moments before. The sunlight did not seem so wonderful now that it was almost shimmering against the tops of the wolf skulls.

Rio was close to turning and running as fast as her limbs would carry her. She wanted to get away from this place as soon as possible — she didn't care to search for rationality for what she'd seen. However, movement caught her eye before she could move an inch. It was as if the tall grasses were swaying in the wind, but there was no wind. Fear stiffened her muscles. She did not even know where the movement had come from, for it was merely a flash in her peripheral vision. Perhaps she was imagining things. She took a step to the side, preparing the turn and leave, but a hiss halted her instantly. Fright returned in a massive wave that nearly knocked her off her feet. She lowered her body, wishing to hide against the earth but knowing it was futile. What was going to happen to her? I don't mean any harm! she said, her voice involuntarily high-pitched. Rio was certain she'd heard a note of disgust on the word "wolf." If this was a pack's land, why did they hate their own species? Nothing made sense to her.

OOC: Figure this needs an ending anyway ^^

He could smell her fear on her, and he grinned his coyote grin, still hiding, in an awkward position because he was in his optime form, he still blended well with the grass, it was just hard to move well crouching in this form and he was sure to give his position away by changing, he moved slightly, but like a wind ruffling dry grass.

You plague the earth with your existence,

He said, he could tell she was around his age, she seemed uneducated for a wolf that was able to go about wandering by herself, but he’d been out of his den with his brothers and sister since only a little while after they were born. He knew the world and the sacrifices it asked for. Hw knew the gods wanted blood, that they thrived on it. He watched her as he moved again, this time heading for her back, then he raised to his full height, which wasn’t anywhere near towering, in fact he was smaller in stature, but where he was small he made up for by his intimidating red stare.

You smell of fear, it seems you do not wish to have the same fate as your brethren,

He said, his coyote smiled creasing his face. It was his classic looked, he may look like he was having a bit of fun, but he was sizing her up seeing what she would be capable of, but he made no move to chase her off quite yet.

Big Grin

She stood still, muscles tautly coiled and prepared to loosen should she need to make a quick retreat. Her entire body was poised for flight — if she did not learn the source of the hissing voice, Rio would flee. However, as she had expected, the voice returned with words whose origins she did not understand. It made no sense for him to be referring to her. She wasn't harming anything by standing where she was, having not even crossed into the pack with such a hauntingly strange "fence." The male voice was drenched with poison, is if she was worse than the dirt beneath her feet. Perhaps there was a ghost.

Terrified tears welled in her sparkling eyes. Unsure of what would happen to her, she feared for her life. Searching the grass, movement caught the drift of her gaze, a figure rising from the bowels of the Earth. At first, she noticed only the canine's eyes, bright as freshly spilled blood. The sable wolfess felt she would break apart in their glare — she had never yet witnessed anything as powerful as those eyes. What do you mean? she questioned the slender creature quietly. The teenager had no idea what he was talking about when he spoke of her fate and of her fellow wolf. I'm afraid of you, she admitted, needing him to know that he was having his desired effect. Rio saw no difference between coyotes and wolves. She understood now that the nameless coyote hated her species, but it seemed so wrong. Prejudice was not in her heart, in fact, the frightening beast was teaching her its meaning.

As he watched her he could see that her flight instinct was quite ready to go. Well he wouldn’t bother chasing, but she stayed where she was, and he knew it was the terror and suspense that kept her there. He really was that intimidating, and he soaked in the lust for more acknowledgement. At her question, he wordlessly looked up at the wolf heads. He didn’t know the actual history of this particular spot, but he knew what it clearly meant. He looked back at her, and disappointment thrummed through his heart when she admitted she was afraid of him, well he’d rather feel it. He kept from snarling, maybe he’d teach this pup who was boss in these lands, then he would never see her near here again. One less wolf to worry about.

You have come too close to the clan Inferni, and if you wish to die, I’d suggest you go further in.

His voice was taunting, he knew she wouldn’t do such a thing, he could have done what he normally did, warned the trespassers of permission and see what they did, some seemed the need for that was quite below them. He never really knew the outcome as when he’d warned them it was in a pack land he himself had never visited. He wasn’t about to see if his warnings had been followed through.

She had never been so afraid before. Living a sheltered life in Pheonix Valley, nothing had ever threatened her, not even a creature. Before now, she had never known fear. The feeling rested in her entire body, cramped in her muscles, festering inside as if there were open sores within her body. Still, she couldn't move, unable to keep her bright gaze away from the horrible red eyes that stared with such foreboding. I-I, she stuttered, her body lowering involuntarily in a stance of submission, her ears folding back to rest against her narrow skull.

The sable girl couldn't see that he was toying with her. In her life, scolding and negative attention came when she had done something terribly wrong, as when she played too roughly with her siblings. She had not even crossed into this coyote's land. Rio trembled violently, her body all but seizing. I-if I leave, she started, her voice hoarse in her hysteria. She cleared her throat with a soft squeak and quickly and began again. If I l-leave, won't you hurt me? Her soft tones were pleading. She fretted about what would happen to her, whether the brute would show mercy.

Now he was getting exactly what he wanted as he breathed in the stench of fear. He listened to her speak, would he really chase her? Well, he doubted it, he was quite full, and she never truly trespassed so he felt he had no reason to actually kill her. Other than being a wolf, but that battle would be played for a very long time, why not let her live rear a few pups and live life till Set could put his paws against the wolf world.,

There’s only one way to find out.

He said, his coyote smile to it’s fullest and his over large ears erect, wanting to know how long it would take her to finally disappear and never look over her shoulder again.

In fact you’ve many solutions, but one of them you won’t know till you try it.

He said, he was having too much fun with this game, and he wasn’t ready to stop yet, but the whole idea to the game was to find out how long fear stricken legs would stay, he knew if he jerked toward her, that her legs would take her as far away from him as they could god. The flight instinct was fun to play with, of course he’d used it on many occasions and he wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. His motto was live to fight another day, and he’d planned on many fights. Hopefully something more fun than this, but scaring the wits out of the wolf was just something he wanted to enjoy right now. His red eyes bore into the girls, figuring it would be about time that she’d bolted. Usually they’d get to a point where they would be brave enough to move. He could help but what would be the fun in that?

Enkiel's refusal to take even the slightest step forward encouraged Rio to stay put. One move in her direction would involuntarily spark the reaction of flight, and she'd have no time to look back. She had no idea that this was true, that this was how it was going to be. Her need to learn about the danger which she faced kept her still as long as he stayed a set distance away from her — her nose never stopped twitching, searching for information.

Rio was not stupid, she'd just had few opportunities to learn how to protect herself against harmful canines. She was ignorant and naive. What s-solutions...? she wanted to know. The question had left her lips before she could stop it, but her voice was barely audible. She felt that she would be better off if she understood the male, though she should have fled moments ago. The small wolf sunk forward a hair's breadth, not realizing the carelessness of the move. Even so, her stance lowered, and she was groveling against the ground though she was several feet away from her superior.

Enkiel rolled his eyes as though the solutions were quite obvious, then continued his red eyed stare. She was so afraid yet her curiosity kept her feet locked in place, he found that somewhat interesting, but he had gotten to the point where he didn’t even understand wolves anymore than the next coyote did.

If you enter Inferni, I’ll kill you, If you stand here for much longer, no doubts… I’ll kill you, If you run, well you won’t know what happens till then huh?

He was now getting rather bored of this naïve wolf, and figured it was about time to stop playing with her, it had been fun but now it was just work. He stepped forward towards her, doubting she’ll stay anywhere near him. He waited for the result.

She was still, listening to the frightening creature's answer to her hysterical question. His words at last pushed her over the edge — there was no hesitance in his tone, and nothing else to suggest he was meant anything but what he said to her. She watched him closely, a fang digging into the flesh of her lip until she tasted blood, all the while taking tiny steps backward. His red eyes were now too bloody and full of malice for her to stare, but when he stepped just slightly in her direction, her own hesitance (wherever it came from) ended.

Rio whined as she spun around, nearly tripping in her haste. She aligned her body to promote speed, tail tucked firmly against her caved-in stomach, and ran. The girl took no time to look over her shoulder. Though she wished to see if he was on her tail, and if so how closely, her life was foremost in her thoughts. As she neared the Forest, Rio hated herself, cursing her stupidity and ignorance. She could very easily have died — it didn't matter that there were questions she wanted answered. Tears pooled in her periwinkle jewels, disappearing into the wind.
