Snails

A small black ball of fur was curled up in the grass, its tiny form slowly rising and falling with its breath. Two small triangles sat perched on top of the little kitten's head, and his eyes were closed in two thin lines of contentment. It didn't last for long, however; something else was perched on his head - or rather, his nose. At the feel of this strange thing, the kitten's eyes flew open, and he let out a small squeak.

A rock! A rock was stuck to his nose!

Crossing his emerald eyes to get a better view, Element saw that this rock was unlike any he'd seen before; it was round, with a swirly pattern on it, and the bottom, instead of hard, was slimy and sticky as it stuck to the black bridge of the kitten's nose. The ebony kitten shook his head vigorously, but the strange rock stayed almost glued to his nose. Finally deciding that enough was enough, the small kitten romped away to find his mother.

"Mommy!" the young kitten's squeaky voice announced as soon as the equally dark but much larger feline was in sight. "Mommy, dere's a wock stuck to my nose!"

The large and beautiful feline turned her head and laughed in soft amusement at her kitten's antics. She bent down low so that her nose was to the 'rock', and batted a paw at it. The 'rock' slid down Element's nose and into the grass, where a small slimy creature emerged from a hole in it, and the 'rock' revealed itself as a snail.

"Mommy," Element squeaked, "what is it?"

"It's a snail, little one," the larger black cat spoke, wrapping her tail around her paws. "A snail is a creature that lives in a shell."

The tiny black kitten's eyes widened at this new idea, and he brought his nose up to the snail. "Hi, snail," he whispered.

As the tiny kitten followed the snail around the field, the larger ebony feline watched on with twinkling green eyes. Her tiny kitten was growing up, becoming curious...soon, it would be time for him to be out on his own in the big world. She saddened at the thought, but that was the nature of things - and she was sure her little midnight star would grow up to become an excellent young cat himself.

She knew.
