It had been too long now, she suspected. Lolita had waited too long. It seemed like they were floating on different levels of the world, missing one another and she kept reaching out for Pippa, but she could never reach her. In reality, she had been avoiding her, trying to keep to herself and her daughters as much as possible. The rust and white woman that she shared a home and love with needed space, and Lolita wanted only to give it to her, perhaps in hopes that it would lead to her forgiveness. The Monroe woman did not know if that forgiveness would ever come, and she could only hope it would. If she were in Pippa’s place, though, she did not know if she would be inclined to forgive her, either.

It was late at night, her three daughters fast asleep in a pile on the bed and snuggled underneath some blankets. Lolita knew that they would be safe there, as she was only going down the hall. She did not know what she hoped to accomplish by going to Pippa, but she needed to. The dead woman wanted nothing more than to make things right between them again, if the damage was even something that could be repaired. She stepped quietly down the hall, hesitating as she reached the closed door to Pippa’s room. Maybe she was not even in there, or perhaps she was. Either way, Lolita could not bring herself to knock, instead leaning against the wall next to the door and sliding down it to rest on the floor with her knees drawn up to her chest. She did not know what she would say, even. “Pippa…” she said quietly, the whisper a rueful sound. What had she done? How could she make this right?
