[P]urple Grass Grows
#1
[html]

Seyonne! : D taking place in the afternoon ^^

Element had been walking in Ethereal Eclipse for a while. The soft grass beneath his paws was a nice change from the hard floors he'd grown accustomed to in Halifax. Back there, there were rough, hard stone floors, loose rocks that got stuck between your paw pads, and sharp stones to cut yourself with. Here, it was all soil and grass and soft and warm.

The black cat simply flopped on the grass beneath him, looking up at the clouds passing by. He could feel winter coming on; the air was colder than usual, and his medium-length, silky pelt didn't protect from the bitter cold. It did, however, protect from weather such as this, and this was a nice day anyway. The grass was sun-warmed, so half of him was on what seemed like a toasty bed while the other half lay exposed to cool breezes.

He rolled around a bit in the grass, purring as the blades tickled him underneath his fur. He loved grass very much; it was one of the simpler pleasures in life, and he enjoyed rolling in it more than anything. He then flopped over onto his belly and saw a small snail creeping along the floor - a reminder of his kittenhood.

ooc: Big Grin

Seyonne liked this forest, despite it being a little damp at times. He liked how quiet it was and especially all the trees. He stopped and smiled into the trees above him, probably looking just a little crazy. Birds flitted about and all was calm in the cool afternoon. He continued on his random adventure, eyes alert and taking in everything. He took to the trees after a while of walking, taking advantage of how close the trees were and leaping between them to advance. He noticed a thinning of the trees a little to his right and headed that way. Soon small shafts of light were shining through the trees, and he wasn't willing to make the leap to the next tree. He was good, sure, but it wasn't worth it to risk his limbs or life making a questionable jump.

He stood perched and looked below at the forest floor. His eyes were drawn to the pools of light, and in one of them he spotted a familiar shape. Being as sneaky as possible, he backtracked to another tree and descended down the trunk. He slunk forward, determined to remain undetected. He reached out a paw ever so carefully and batted the snoozing cat on the ears. He danced away, trying to get out of reach should Element not be happy about being awakened. "Hello hello! Weird how we stumble upon each other, eh?" He hoped he had scared the cat at least at little. It was payback for the cat taking him by surprise just a few days earlier. He sat in a beam of sunlight a respectable distance away, smiling ever so slightly. The smile was partly from the warm feeling of the sun, but he had to also admit he was happy to see the bird-talking cat.

Meep! Sorry for being so late!

"Hello hello! Weird how we stumble upon each other, eh?"

"Mrrow!" Element exclaimed, leaping from his spot in the grass to turn and see who else but Seyonne. He had startled Element, who had been lazing around; he supposed that was what he got for scaring Seyonne when they first met! He laughed and waved his tail in greeting. "Hello, Seyonne," he said in reply to the fox's exclamation. "Weird it is! What are you doing on this lovely day?"

It was indeed a lovely day; the clouds danced lazily across the sky, and the sun shone down on them both. Seyonne's fur glistened and shined in the sun, and Element's own did as well, but in a midnight way. Looking down, Element saw that the snail had retreated into its shell at the sight of the fox, and Element chuckled to himself. He remembered the habits of snails from his own childhood, when he had had a snail stuck to his nose. It had taken his mother to pry the creature away from Element, who had then become fascinated with the nature of it and had followed it around for nearly the rest of the day. He wouldn't do that now - he had learned that the daily habits of snails were far from very interesting - but he still liked them, and was fond of the way this one's shell gleamed in the light.

ooc: Gah. >< Sorry this took so long, and is so short.

Seyonne couldn't help the smallest smirk that twitched to live on his muzzle as Element shot awake. He watched the cat's tail as it twisted in on itself and waved, once more amazed at how a tail could do such a thing. His own tail could wiggle back and forth and was good for balance, but it definitely couldn't curl like a cat's. He still liked his own better for its wonderful puffiness and its ability to be a good nose warmer. He pondered all this nonsense about tails in a second, then turned his mind to the more important matter of answering his acquaintance's question. "Oh, nothing much." He swung his head to encompass the entire forest, "Just wandering around." He sat and nodded to the cat. "How about yourself? Besides catching a quick cat nap?" He grinned at his own joke, pleased with himself.

It was weird, talking normally to another creature like Element. He had spent the last month in mostly self-imposed solitude, but everything had changed when he happened upon this strange new land. There were luperci to worry about for one, but also new forests and ocean shores. Even the trees were different. He guessed what most drew him to Element was that he was the first creature he met here. Not to mention he was a lot like a friend he had back in his old home. Element was a sturdy rock in this weird environment. He would probably find out today that Element was actually crazy and prone to fits of murderous rage - that was just his luck lately.

sorry for the lateness!

Element smiled at Seyonne's joke and laughed. "You never know when you may get another one," he said. He was glad he met this fox; he had never met another creature his size in the area of Souls unless it was owned by another Luperci. He had started to feel like he was the only predator on the lower end of the size spectrum until he'd met the fox, Seyonne - although they were different species, Element felt that they were not too far apart at all, and liked being in the company of his friend.

"I'm also getting ready for the cold winter ahead," the cat said. He knew it would be freezing cold in December, and he wanted to soak up the sun as much as he could before the cold hit. He knew his black coat would help in the cold, as it absorbed heat more, but he couldn't be sure when the next time his chance to be in the warm sun and the comfortable grass would be. He wondered what the fox would do - but surely he'd be fine, as his thick and warm fur and tail would keep him nice and warm for the winter whereas Element's lush and silky but not as warming pelt wouldn't do the same.

ooc: I guess I'm going crazy because I could have sworn I replied to this. Huge post to make up for it?

Seyonne nodded as Element replied to his joke. It was true, perhaps more so for smaller creatures like the two of them. He didn't think about it much, but he guessed that being small and vulnerable didn't improve your chances at life. He made his mind switch tracks for the moment - now was now, and there was no need to worry about the future. The mention of winter made him uncomfortable. This would be his first winter in 'Souls, and he still wasn't sure how abundant small prey was in good times, much less how they would fare in winter. He didn't know how harsh the winter could be here either. His brows furrowed together in thought. "Have you ever wintered in the area before? I haven't, and was wondering how cold it got, and how prey was." He hadn't been thinking about the future enough, apparently, because now he realized he could be in trouble. He was glad for his already thickening coat, and noticed then that Element had no such coat. Sometimes in winter he went to sleep thinking when he woke, if he woke, he'd be frozen stiff. Maybe he was just a little dramatic, he had never liked the cold, but now he was worried about the cat.

Maybe he had nothing to worry about. Maybe prey was plentiful and the winter not so harsh. Maybe Element had a den to snuggle up in and would be warmer than Seyonne himself. He was bad at finding dens, mostly because he had been with his family for all but one winter so far in his life. Last year he couldn't find a den that wasn't occupied and had to make his own. It fell apart more times than he could count, but it was warm. He had been proud of himself at the time, but looking back the den was downright pitiful. He felt that he would need something better this time around. The air had a bite to it that he was used to feeling later in the year. He hadn't had trouble with prey yet, but he guessed it was because there didn't seem to be many smaller predators around to take them. If bigger prey became scarce, would the wolves and luperci hunt mice? He tried to convey this to Element, but failed miserably. "I worry about the smaller prey." This was the only part that made much sense. He felt ashamed of himself, and disappointed that he couldn't put more than a sentence together coherently.

xD happens to me all the time! and sorry for the delay.. -facepalm-

"Have you ever wintered in the area before? I haven't, and was wondering how cold it got, and how prey was."

"It gets incredibly cold," Element said, shivering. "But then again, it's sort of unpredictable; this winter could be average, or it could be freezing. As for the prey," he said, "it's certainly harder to hunt. The smaller prey hide in their burrows and it's harder to find them, and Luperci and other large hunters take to finding smaller prey when the larger ones grow scarce." He was a bit worried about the prey problem himself; what would they eat when the Luperci and other larger creatures stole in on their primary food source? And no doubt the prey would scatter and die when the cold months came. It would be harder and harder for Element and Seyonne to hunt and survive if they did.

"I worry about the smaller prey." "As do I," Element said. "We don't eat plants, or at least cats don't; we can't digest it. But the prey does, and when the plants die, they die too; and large predators hunting our food isn't a good way for us to survive. But I always manage," he finished. He didn't eat like a king during winter, but at least he didn't starve.
