Another winter had come. From the window of a compact lower room, Kansas could see the small layer of snow that had accumulated just the night before. Snowflakes danced from the sky, swirling in the wind on their journey from the clouds to the ground. He had always thought that snow was a wonder — he'd read about it a little, astonished to see pictures of what each individual flake looked like, intricate latices of beautifully patterned design. Unbelieving of the pictures, he had carefully watched snow fall on the darker blue stripes of his scarf, and he saw that the book images were not lies. The tiny crystals formed stunning symmetric pattens, barely even visible to his naked eyes. Yet, snowflakes were destined to pile into drifts of white, where their miniature beauty could no longer be found. The only purpose for the original pattern of the individual flakes was to astonish and mystify those who discovered it, as far as the Sadira boy could tell. Nature was a strange, wonderful thing.

Another idea that he had read of in his books was the reason he was in this underused room of the Manor. Apparently, humans had come up with a way to forever preserve the flowers of spring and summer by hanging them to dry. It was a great gift idea, far better than a bouquet that would eventually wilt and rot. He had spent some of the warmer months gathering flowers from human gardens, plots of land cultivated for beauty alone. Many of the houses in Halifax were consumed by the gardens their human residents had left behind. That meant a plethora of flowers to choose from. He carefully selected roses, bluebells, and pansies and grouped them with the wildflowers of Nova Scotia's fields, hanging them upturned in the window sill of this very room. He carefully touched the petals as he watched the snow fall, happy to feel their fragile, dry texture. They were ready. Kansas grinned and energetically grabbed a crystal vase from the floor. He spent the next half hour gingerly taking the flowers down and arranging them in the vase, despaired to lose a few of the weaker petals in the process. Still, the finished product was pretty. Though the colors were duller than before the petals' drying, the washed-out hues were still soft and lovely.

Kansas stood back, crossing his arms as he gazed at what he had made, and hoping that she would like it.

Yay! Big Grin 300+

As she had grown up and become a leader, Savina's sleeping habits had changed a little. She had used to be a horrible night owl who could simply not get herself up at a decent time in the morning. Her station in life had required that she not be such a bedhead though, and she had slowly improved her schedule. The woman still did not like getting up too terribly early, but it was an improvement. In the winter though, her new habits were backsliding into the old. It was so hard to get out of bed when she knew right outside her warm covers there was the unwelcome chill, just waiting to make her shiver.

It was usual that Kansas was up before she was, and such was the case today. He had arisen and she had mumbled and wrapped the extra blankets tighter around herself, forming a little cocoon of warmth. How much longer she slept she couldn't say, but eventually her emerald orbs opened up and she decided she might as well get her lazy bones up. Unwillingly she came out from underneath the shield of heat and immediately her fur stood up at the temperature drop. A chill ran through her body and she quickly grabbed her scarf, wrapping it around her slender neck. For good measure, she also took one of the blankets from the bed and wrapped it about herself. It was still warm from her body heat, and took the edge of the cold.

Savina glanced out the window and frowned slightly: snow. If she could help it, she would not be making any treks outside the manor today. What to do to entertain herself though? She didn't much feel like knitting at the moment. Maybe her love was still inside the house somewhere. That thought turned her frown into a grin and she left the room to go search for him. The Consul moved down to the main level of the house and sniffed around. His scent was still strong so he wasn't too far away, but where was he exactly? "Kansas?" she called out softly, hoping to catch his ear.

After he was satisfied with the arrangement of the flowers, Kansas carefully lifted the vase from the windowsill. He held it against himself, protective of the fragile parcel. Imagining the horror of accidentally dropping the vase and seeing it, and the flowers, shatter all over the floor, he kept a firm grip on the vase. Now that his gift was finally complete, he was eager to give it to his love and to see her reaction. It was a small thing, not very useful outside of its aesthetically pleasing quality. Already he could feel his belly twitch with hopeful anxiety as he stepped out from the little room and into the equally frigid hallway.

Last time he had seen her, Savina was cuddled in a swirl of blankets. He had spent a few seconds watching her sleep, adoring the dreamy expression on her face, the soft rise and fall of her body as she breathed. He expected to wait in the room for her to awaken, never willing to wake her up, especially not for his own gratification. She was a mother and a pack leader, and he figured that she needed every moment of sleep that she could get.

He was about to turn in the direction of the stairs when a familiar voice drifted through the Manor. Startled, he pinpointed the flow of the beautiful sound and hurried to find her. Though he had initially hoped that she would awaken to her present, this could be even better. Perhaps she would be even more surprised to see him come around the corner with the bouquet ready for her. As soon as he saw her he regretted being encumbered by the vase, longing to wrap her in his arms. Instead, Kansas grinned widely and lifted the vase in both hands before her.

Good morning, love.

God, I love them ^^ 300+

As she stood in the large common area of the mansion, she noticed from the corner of her eyes that there was no fire burning in the hearth. No wonder it was so horribly cold! After she found her mate she would make a point of finding some wood and start a nice big fire to help warm the large house up. Fire had used to scare her immensely. She remembered, with amusement, the time that she and Anu had gotten caught out in the Trenches during a storm and her friend had started a fire to dry them off and keep them warm. Savina had yelped with surprise when the sparks sprouted flames, her old instincts overtaking the sense that Anu would not do anything to put them in peril. While uncontrolled fire was still a danger, she had come to appreciate the use of the element, especially when it came to winter. The fireplace could not keep the whole house toasty warm, but it upped the temperature by a few degrees and every little bit helped.

Movement caught her ear and she turned her gaze from the empty fireplace to see Kansas coming towards her with a beautiful arrangement of dried flowers. Her heart skipped a beat and she could not help the warm smile that her lips formed. Even now after all this time, her mate could still surprise her with his random acts of kind thoughtfulness. Savina walked eagerly over to meet him, surveying the delicate blossoms appreciatively. "Oh Kansas, it's gorgeous! Thank you, love," she said as she scooted around the vase in his hands to give him a kiss. "The gods must truly favor me to give me such a wonderful man as you." How she had ever been happy before he came into her life, she could not recall.

"We'll have to put this by the window in our room! Right now though, I was thinking of making a fire to help warm the house up. Maybe we could snuggle by the heat for a while?" There really was no other way she would prefer to spend this morning, or any other for that matter.

I do too! and I'm assuming there's already some wood inside? x) 300+

Her voice was sweeter music than any he had ever heard. The lovely tone accented by her Italian heritage sent him into ecstasies each time he heard it, without fail. His pale cheeks turned a faint rose when she exclaimed her thanks and gave him a kiss. He was so relieved, and happy, to hear that she genuinely liked the gift, small as it was. You're welcome, he spoke softly, shifting the vase carefully into one arm so he could nuzzle her soft dark cheek. Whatever he could do to put a smile on her face was worth any amount of time and effort; he enjoyed coming up with things to do for her, just to win the sight of that lovely smile. The omnipresence had blessed him too.

Hearing her idea, Kansas grinned with pleasure and took her hand in his. Yeah, let's do it, he responded, already excited to hold her against him in the warmth of a blazing fire. He too could think of no better way to spend his morning. The pups were old enough to look after themselves for several hours, leaving plenty of time for them to share together, and he loved it. Still grasping her delicate hand in his large one, he lead her toward the fireplace. Only then did he let it go, placing the vase temporarily on an end table by the sofa. He turned around and went to the wood pile, taking a few large logs and arranging them inside the fireplace, careful to leave enough wood for her to help build the fire as well - he assumed she wanted to. I have matches babe... whenever its ready, he spoke, taking the small book of matches out of his pocket and dangling it between his fingers to show her. He always kept them handy in case of special moments like this.

Yuppers! Sorry, I feel like this came out kind of scattered x.x; SoSuWriMo 394

Who would want a big oaf trying to tell her her place was to have puppies and let him do all the work when she could have a sweet, thoughtful man like the one she had? Savina had never been enamored of men who thought they were superior or had big egos inflating their heads. That was like her father, and the last person she would want to be with was someone like Serge Russo. She knew that some may have questioned her choice in a mate, but honestly the Italian fey didn't give two shakes of her tail to what other people thought. It was none of their damn business. Kansas made her happy, and she loved him. That was all the reason she needed to be with him. The Consul smiled bright and her tail wagged as her nuzzled against her. No, he was all she needed, all she would ever need.

She was so glad that he liked the sound of her proposal. Winter was snuggling weather, after all. You had to do what you could to keep warm and the fey could think of no better way to do that than to share a blanket by the fire with her man. Even though she couldn't help but be a little sad that their children were getting all grown up, it was nice to have more time to themselves again. When it was just the two of them Savina could let her selfish side come through and be comfortable knowing that he would not judge her for it. She was not a selfish person, but everyone had a little bit of it in them, and when she was alone with Kansas was the one time she could be so without feeling guilty.

Kansas lead her by the hand towards the fireplace before depositing the dried bouquet on a nearby table. He grabbed a few logs from the pile, but still left plenty for her to add. She shot him an appreciative smile as she grabbed a couple more and placed them around where he had set his. He even had matches! "Well, you're all prepared, aren't you?" she said in a light, teasing tone. The Marino finished arranging the logs and then scooted back. "It's all ready now, mio amore," she said letting one dark hand rest on his creamy back.
