Golden steps

Out of the quiet came a soft 'woof'. The trees were all turning bright and festive colors, heralding the cold weather soon to arrive in Phoenix Valley. The air was already cool, unlike the warm breezes in the summer. It was fall, but Bindu Epals didn't know a season other than summertime. She lay quietly in the shade of a tree for which she had no name, tail curled around her hind paws to keep them warm.

Bindu glanced sideways at the sudden motion which had startled her and almost immediately wagged her tail. This was not anything with fangs nor claws. Rather, it was a beautiful golden leaf making lazy spirals to the ground. Her dark eyes followed it until it rested at her feet. Only then did she dare to inspect it and its odd color. Her spotted nose sniffed gently at it and deemed that there was nothing strange about the leaf other than its pretty color.

The young hybrid figured that the trees were sick. Maybe it was a plant-disease, spreading around the valley rapidly enough that some trees were entirely red or orange-yellowy. Bindu did not mind, so long as the disease did not kill the trees. The colors were warm and exciting. Carefully, the teen maneuvered the leaf with her muzzle and paws so that her foreleg rested on top of it. Maybe she could show it to Geneva or Pripyat or Grace. Maybe she could even put it in her clean, white room.

Bindu did not know how she managed to walk so far away from the house. Normally she felt scared when not on the porch or in her room- especially when she was alone. It's 'cause the forest is so pretty today, you want to see the colors, she thought to herself, glancing upward at the beauty. Or maybe it was something more. An urge to get out of the house, away from Geneva and Pripyat and Grace. A step towards independence.

It was probably the colors.
