Chasing Butterflies

Wheee!

Since the first time that Melee snuck out and went to explore, she was feeling more confident about going out again. There were still a few other ways she could go and explore. She had already been to the Eternal Eclipse where she met Oak. He was such a nice pup and she wondered if she went out exploring that she would meet someone new. She was hanging out along whisper beach and looked around. There was no one there so she figured it would be safe enough for her to wander away. She slipped out of the borders and began to run towards the woods.

Melee stopped at the river that ran through the middle of the woods. She looked down into the dark water and she could see her reflection. She figured the water was deep judging from how dark the water was. She backed away from the bank and continued downstream towards the Dampwoods. She had no idea where she was going, but judging from her last encounter alone she was sure that she would be safe. The pup continued along and wagged her tail in happiness. She couldn’t wait to see who she would meet this time. She hoped she would run into another pup so she could find someone else to play with who was outside of Dahlia de Mai. She trotted along, feeling the soil under her pads.

Melee stopped when she saw something fly in front of her. It was a butterfly. She giggled and began to chase the creature downstream. It began to fly closer towards the water, but she continued to chase it. She was so happy and didn’t want anything to spoil her fun. The pup laughed and felt her paws on the edge of the river, but her attention was still on the flying creature rather than her own safety.

OOC here: Yay! 600+

The D’Angelo pup awoke early that morning to an empty den. With the formation of the new pack, Anathema, mother Naniko was a busy wolfess, and it was yet another morning that the white wolf had left her dark, slumbering babe in the safety of one of the many dens inside the pack’s underground lair. From the start, Naniko had been strict with Scorpius, cultivating his growing mind and body but not tolerating any disobedience. They had been on the move for much of young Scorpius’s early life, traveling to the territory that his mother claimed just a few days ago. Much of the journey had been easy for him, being carried by his mother or aunt, but eventually the boy got restless and wanted to be allowed to run and play. Even after the pack was formed, there was only one other cub with which to spend his time, and the other adults were too busy settling their territory to be concerned with foolish pup games. Perhaps soon as Scorpius aged and would begin to learn the pack’s ways he would be more entertained by the adults, but at the moment, he was quite bored.

His cousin Juju was only good for chewing on, and with their emergence into the caves his fur was beginning to taste a bit bland. Juju did not seem to be nearby this morning anyway. Scorpius sat up, yawned and blinked the sleep from his eyes. His ears cupped but the little satellites did not detect any sounds of the pack reverberating through the cave, so, curious, he began to wander through the hallways... It was not long until he spotted sunlight streaming into the cavern. He stepped up to the threshold of the den and peered outside. One quick scan of the area proffered no other pack members, and upon seeing so much untraveled terrain, Scorpius threw caution to the wind and darted off. Being young and naive, he was not aware of it when he left the borders of Anathema. . .

Hours had passed while the Luperci cub wandered from appealing spot to interesting smell, and he had just about dehydrated himself with all the irresistible urges he had to pause and pee on so many things along the way. Since he had never left his mother’s protective watch, the fact that he could not magically find his way home had not yet dawned on him, and he certainly had failed to pay attention to the path he rambled.

But the inevitable happened; his round belly let out a furious roar. He had gone such a long way and on an empty stomach, and now all of his reserves were depleted. It was then that he wandered in a circle for a moment before realizing he did not know his way home. His blood ran cold and his heart became a thick lump in his stomach. Unsure what to do, he yipped a few cries for his mother, then crashed through the underbrush towards the sound of water... and came to a screeching halt.

His crimson eyes widened as he saw another pup – and for once it wasn’t Juju! All fears forgotten, he curiously watched the earthen girl for a moment. She was chasing something… a bug. His brows arched and his tongue lolled as he watched her and hunkered down. If she hadn’t spotted him just yet then maybe he could join in this game, too, and take her by surprise. Yet just as he was about to spring, his eyes flicked from the butterfly to the girl, and he suddenly realized how dangerously close her paws were to the rushing current. Without wasting a beat, Scorpius surged forward and caught the other pup by the tail, yanking with all his might in hopes to pull her away from the river’s edge.

Yayness!

Melee was having so much fun playing around with the butterfly that she didn’t even realize the danger she was in. She just wanted to chase the creature until she caught it. She wagged her tail happily as she felt her paws brush up against its wings. They felt so weird and she wanted to feel them again. She continued to chase the little creature before it began to fly towards the water and the other side of the bank. The pup tried to reach for it one last time; however, she lost her balance and was heading straight for the water. The girl closed her eyes, bracing for herself to hit the water.

Suddenly Melee felt something pull on her tail. She whined from it and then felt herself being pulled away from danger. Once she was out of harm’s way, she panted and laid down on the soil to catch her breath. She curled her tail around her back paw as she moved her gaze to her rescuer. It was just another pup, though he did look older than she was. He was all black with bright red eyes. The pup felt her body trying to shift closer to the ground. It was like something out of a ghost story. He looked a bit scary. She didn’t know what to do about the situation. Part of her told her to just run away as fast as she could and to the other part of her told her to stay. She decided to stay. Perhaps there was more to him than meets the eye.

Melee eased up her stance and rose to her feet. She shook her head to clear her mind of his appearance and tried to picture him as a brighter colored pup with brighter eyes. So far it was helping to build her confidence back up and made her able to speak to him. She folded her ears down a bit before she spoke. ”Dank you for saving me…” She folded her tail down but kept her multi colored gaze on the male.

He had arrived just in the nick of time, it seemed! He had lunged for the girl when he thought she was too close and had he hesitated just a second she would have fallen into the river and been swept away in the freezing current. He barely snagged the end of her tail as it was, but luckily his teeth found their mark and with no small amount of effort, Scorpius managed to pull the endangered girl away from the rushing, sub-zero waters and onto the safe bank. He hesitated for a moment then, as though he was unsure what to do afterwards, her tail still in his mouth, though he did let go once the girl moved away and sat down. He waited a moment longer before saying anything, studying the russet pup with his deep eyes.

“Whoa... That was so cool! I think I have some of your fur in my teeth.”

There was something about her that he liked instantly. Though Scorpius could not quite peg it himself, what he liked was her demeanor. She had been frightened and he saved her life, and then for some reason the fellow pup crouched as though she was unsure about something. Scorpius could not help but feel that she was crouching before him, a gesture that spoke to his basic instincts and boosted his domineering ego. He grinned and stood straight and tall – as tall as he could stand on his short legs – his tail raised in pride. Juju often acted the same way, and that was why he liked his cousin so much, too.

Though it was not long until the girl began to regain her composure. Perhaps she was not crouching to him or his superiority, but had just been regrouping? The smoke-pelt pup let out a short huff, though did not show too much irritation on his face. After all, he was not deeply learned in these matters and was only going off of his basic instincts. For a split second he thought he would pounce on her while she squatted – not out of meanness or hatred, but just because he wanted to – but he did not, and in a moment she seemed to have overcome whatever had worried her and began to perk up.

When the girl spoke she seemed to have some kind of impediment. Scorpius was not the most eloquent of pups, either, but he still cocked his head and twitched an ear at her. He nodded and his tongue lolled out of the side of his grin for a second before he took a step closer to her.

“Yeah, no problem,” he seemed to be gloating a bit. “You’d have been ice cubes in seconds if you fell in. My name’s Scorpius. Who are you?”

They're so cute together :3

Melee was so thankful to the male for saving her life. She knew that it would have been bad for her to fall into water during this time of the season. She had to admit that she liked the butterflies but wondered if this one was out to get her for some reason. She shook her head of the thought and figured it just happened for no reason. The pup turned her attention back to her rescuer and then wondered if this was fate’s way of having her meet this male. Considering what had happened, she wouldn’t doubt the idea. She smiled as she turned to him and he made his comment. She gave a light laugh and then bounced around him. ”Ya. I see some hanging fwom youw mouth.” She moved her front paw up to his mouth and tried to pull it out. It wasn’t coming out easily.

Melee had to admit that she was beginning to like this pup more and more. It was just like how she felt when she first met Oak near his pack lands. She was so happy to be making so many friends. She hoped they would both stay her friends even when she got older. The one thing she loved was that neither of them were judging her for her birth defect. The pup hated that the most, for someone to make fun of her because of her paw. She smiled happily and wagged her tail, wondering what he thought about her. She wondered if her liked her too.

Melee watched the male pup coming towards her. She took a seat and listened to him. She smiled as he introduced himself as Scorpius. She liked his name and wondered if her would like her’s. The pup smiled and laid on the ground. ”My name’s Melee Soul. I’m from Dahlia de Mai. What pack awe you fwom?”

The coal pup grunted in surprise as Melee surged forward and nipped at his mouth, trying to dislodge some of the fur. At first he tried to pull himself away from her, unsure of what the exuberant girl was trying to do! Pawing at his muzzle like that… no one pawed his muzzle! He snorted, but before he could grow much more indignant he realized she was only playing at the bits of her tail fur that were left in his teeth. He worked it with his tongue and spat it onto the ground at his paws so she would stop, though when he lifted his head and looked back to her any annoyance he had with her had passed and his good natured grin had returned.

What with the excitement and snow abound Scorpius had failed to take note of the peculiarities of the young Dahlian’s forepaws, but when she tried to pull the fur from his teeth he noticed something odd about the girl. The fleeting thought quickly skittered to the back of his mind, though, as he watched Melee perch before him.

“Dahlia de May? Never heard of it,” he muttered offhandedly. It was not strange that the pup had yet to know about Dahlia, for he did not know about any of the outlying packs in ‘Souls. His youth had been spent traveling with his mother and Aunt Selene when they left the cult in New Brunswick, a life he barely remembered. The people there may have been the faintest of blurred memories in the pup’s mind, but they had taken leave so soon after his birth that he had replaced the memory of those people with new ones of traveling, and of the wolves in his mother’s new pack.

“I’m from Anathema.” The statement was strong, and the bold pup stood tall and proud as he spoke the words. “My mother is the Angela – our alpha.” He beamed with delight as he told her of his parentage.

He let it hang in the air for a moment before his stiff posture went lax again, and he padded closer to Melee. The sable furred boy lowered his head as though to sniff at the ground about her, though soon his nose bumped against her forepaws. He sniffed them for a second, catching faint traces of the many adventures this young pup had already been on, then lifted his gaze to meet Melee’s. Until now, Juju was the only other pup he had ever known, and there was nothing different about either of the boys. He had never seen strange paws like these, and did not know what a birth defect was. He cocked his head and looked at Melee, confused and concerned.

“What’s wrong with your paws?” he asked simply. There was no hint of scorn or mockery in his tone, he was honestly curious. He placed a paw of his own next to Melee’s. Unable to even count digits on one of her paws, he studied the other that seemed to have more than his. “Why do they look different?”

Melee could see the annoyed look Scorpius had in his bright red eyes. She had no intentions of trying to harm him or do anything to make him feel uncomfortable. She was merely trying to help him get the loose fur out of his teeth. She folded her ears down and backed away a bit when she saw that look. The pup did not want to try anything else and risk annoying him even more, otherwise he may have thought it was a mistake trying to rescue her. She waited until she saw the look of happiness and fun back in his eyes. She liked to see that look considering the pelt and eyes made him look frightening, and at first he was a bit, but not anymore. She slowly sat down in the snow as she listened to him say that he had never heard of Dahlia de Mai. The girl didn’t blame him considering he didn’t look like he had been out here too often, then again, neither had she. This was only her second time outside of the pack and already something bad would have happened if he hadn’t come along. She was sure thankful for that. She just smiled and pointed back the way she had come from. ”Dahlia de Mai back that way. Maybe you can come see it with me some day.”

Melee cocked her head in confusion when Scorpius mentioned the name of his pack. She had never heard of such a name before. She shook her head and looked around the area. ”Never heard of it before. Where is it?” She was a bit taken back when she heard that this pup’s mother was actually the alpha of his pack. She couldn’t help but try to bow and show him a bit more respect. She had no idea of the culture in his pack so she did not know if alphas and their families were to be held in higher respect. In her attempt to bow, she actually did a forward roll and couldn’t help but roll a bit closer to him. ”Opps. I sowwy.” The girl quickly got up and looked to him as she backed away to a more comfortable distance.

Melee moved her ears around as he began to sniff around her. She wondered what he could have been trying to smell for. Perhaps it was the mixture of new scents from the other pack she had been to plus the scent of her own pack. Although she didn’t mind him smelling her, the pup moved back when he came to her birth defect and seemed to focus his attention on it. She didn’t like it when others pointed her out on her birth defect. She wished they could just over look it and accept her for the girl that she was. She watched him place his paws next to hers. The girl stayed silent about it and folded her ears down. Her tail stopped wagging as she turned to show the male a sorrowful look in her eyes, obviously telling him that she didn’t like to talk about it.

ooc Aww they are so cuuuute. wc 618

“Wow, I'd like to come visit your home one day,” he chirped gleefully and his tail waggled a little at the thought. What would another pack's lands be like? Scoprius had a very small basis of comparison so just naturally assumed that they would be just like Anathema's. His young life had begun in another land, but his mother quickly packed up and moved from that land while he was still just a babe, and he had few memories of that time. “I'm really good at navigating caves. I bet I could have your home memorized in the time it takes to howl.” He couldn't help but boast. Yet prideful as he may be, he was more trying to tell her about his abilities and himself than brag, and there was no sense of 'I'm better than you' in his tone. Better than Juju, maybe, but he wasn't about to bother bragging about that.

As the conversation turned to the whereabouts of Anathema, Scorpius glanced over his shoulder as if to indicate in which direction the lands were, but was not really sure. He turned halfway around, and then made a complete circle before coming back to face Melee. His face melted into confusion for a moment before he was able to summon a more casual demeanor. He quickly recovered, putting on the, 'oh, I'm totally not lost' face, and made a noncommittal gesture. “Oh, it's off that way.”

Then the girl started doing something strange. He watched, confounded, as she dipped her fore half towards the ground. “Wh... why are you doing that?” He scrunched his nose in confusion and watched. It was clearly an awkward and unnatural motion for her. Scorpius had never been bowed to before – he was young, only a pup and despite his parentage held no status in his pack yet, therefor all gestures of respect and loyalty were displayed to his mother. Suddenly the auburn girl tipped forward too far and went tumbling end over end! He made a little cry of worry and bounded over to her. Without thinking he nestled his teeth into her scruff and helped her back to her paws. The jaws on her scruff did not pinch down hard, only enough to help give her a little boost, and it was no more force than any cub would use when playing. He watched as she backpedaled and held his ground for a minute, wondering if she was embarrassed.

“It's okay, you don't have to do that. Well I mean, if I beat you in a wrestling match, you do. But, not for no reason!” He chuckled, and an image of play fighting with Juju flashed through his memory. Perhaps they could play fight here? Did one play fight with a girl? He didn't see why not, they were all Luperci pups, after all, and there was nothing special about girls.

And then he broached the issue of her forepaws. He had only been curious and had no idea that asking about them would offend her. He had never seen anyone with paws like hers before and he found them fascinating. Were all her pack members like that? Maybe they were a whole different type of Luperci! He wanted to know, badly, but when his eyes met hers he read something in her injured gaze. Something that stopped the rest of his questions before they could burble out of his throat. His eyes widened and his ears flattened, matching her expression though a bit more surprise in his own.

“I... I'm sorry,” he eked out the words. “Why are you looking at me like that? Did I do something wrong?”

sorry for the wait. SSWM: 646

Melee was glad to hear that her new friend was interested in visiting her home. She was sure that one day she would be able to show the male her home and introduce him to her family as her newest friend. She couldn’t help but giggle as he mentioned that he could navigate through caves. Was the black male even aware that some members of the pack lived in actual homes and not caves? Obviously not. The girl moved over to his side and made a drawing of a house in the snow. ”We don’t live in a cave Scowpius. Daddy got a nice place that looks like this.” She then pointed to the drawing. The pup was a bit uneasy when Scorpius could not remember the direction his pack lived in. This was not a good situation. What if it got later in the day and he did not know where to go to get back home. She would either have to spend the night with him outside of the pack lands or bring him back to Dahlia de Mai. She did not want her new friend to get in trouble just because he got lost. She looked where he thought was the right way. ”Awe you suwe that is the wight way?”

Melee lifted her head after her small bow and then looked to Scorpius who seemed to have a puzzled look on his face. She tilted her head as he asked why she was even doing that. To be honest, she did not even know herself why she was doing it. She just felt like it needed to be down. ”I did not know youw mommy is a leadew! That’s so cool! My daddy’s not a leadew. He’s just a nowmal membew.” The girl smiled, well before she tripped and began to roll. She watched as the black male bound over towards her, his eyes had the sign of worry in them. She shook her head and then allowed him to help her get back up on her feet. He was such a kind and caring wolf. The pup wagged her tail and ventured her muzzle out to lick him on the cheek. She was so happy that she felt like she could not contain her excitement. She pirked her ears up as he mentioned she should only have to bow her head if she beat him in a wrestling match. The idea sounded nice and she wanted to try out a round. Perhaps once they were done with introductions, they would be able to play wrestle until it got dark.

Melee never liked talking about her defect so she found it rather hurtful when others pointed it out instead of over looking it. She kept her unhappy face, even as he asked why she was looking at him the way she was. After a while of just looking at him, she emitted a sigh and then hid her defective paws. ”I dun like talking about them… I dun really like it and it is what makes me twip a lot.” She sat down on her back paws so he would not be able to look at them anymore. She was sure he would understand and would let the topic on it go. She just wanted to be able to play with the black male without him turning his attention to her defect every single time that it came into view.

Once the subject had been dropped and everything was back to normal, well normal in her case, she would lower the front half of her body while raising the back half into the air. She wanted to play with him. The day was still young and she did not want to waste any more time. She jumped around playfully and kept her eyes on her friend. ”Come on Scowpius, play with me.”
