The girl walked along with her larger friend at her side. The trip had been filled with laughter and joking. They were starting on their new life together. They were making the great journey that their ancestors had taken before them. They were going to become a part of history. Or at least that was how Sakari saw it. She was following along the paths that her uncle had taken before her. Well, a couple of uncles and an aunt. After all another uncle and aunt had decided to make the journey as well, or so she had been told. It pretty much seemed that the whole family was migrating this way. Not that her mother had. No, she had remained in the Great Tribe with her father. Still she had allowed for Sakari to make this trip, to follow the path that was laid out by her heart. She had an admiration for all of the great things that her uncle had managed to accomplish. For having been one of those that had been in the scouting party to find a place where they could escape the sickness that had plagued the Great Tribe. Who wouldn't idolize a family member like that?

The friend had decided it would be best to sleep for the night before continuing their journey in the morning. They were so close and Sakari had was eager to make it the rest of the way but she also trusted the older female's advice. So far the yearling had been able to predict the weather accurately enough and it was that which had caused her to want to bunk down for the night. So the small Amara girl had ended up giving in and snuggling up next to her older friend to sleep the night away.

Of course the first lights to appear in the sky had her getting up and crawling out from beneath the other. She shook the snow from her fur as she let out a yip to greet the approaching day. She then turned to her companion to wander over and nudge her to get her to rise from the snow so that they could continue. But no amount of nudging had the other leaving the blanket of snow. She had no idea that her friend had been sick on their trip. That the other had been making sure the pup had the most to eat while she had taken what was leftover for herself. She had no idea that last night's storm had just drained away what was left in her.

"Meda? Meda, please wake up." The words were whined out but her friend still refused to move. For a moment Sakari was at a loss as to what to do. She couldn't just leave her friend. But she had to get help. "I'll be right back Meda. Everything is going to be okay." She gave the words to her friend before taking off to quickly cover the rest of the distance that was left to reach the location of the tribe.

As she ran she called out for help. "Tsugi! Tsugi!" She called out for the only one that she knew would be here. The only one that she knew would be able to help. She was frantic as she ran right on past the borders and into the heart of the territory. She was panting by the time that she reached the Great Fire. She knew from her time in the Great Tribe that to find the Great Fire she would find life. So that had been what she had sought out. Though she had no idea which home to check for her uncle. "Tsugi!" She called out again and she looked the huts, seeking out the male. Her voice had become broken by tears. From her run, her tears, and the bitingly cold air she could hardly catch her breath. Exhaustion, or perhaps it was the amount of worry, suddenly took over and she collapsed over onto her side. She fought for that oh so needed breath as she awaited her call to be heeded. She had no idea what to do if she couldn't get any help.

Hey, sorry, was already asleep when you posted it! -lick-

It was a calm morning, and the Chief sat still in his cabin doing nothing at all. He did that in the mornings, spent a few minutes doing nothing, thinking about nothing. It cleared his mind from worry. There were plenty of hours for worrying later on. Snow blanketed the village, though the usual paths were hard-trodden. Still, it muffled all sound and made everything soft and light; one of the few things th Chief could enjoy about the winter. He hated traveling in snow, but just looking at it through his window-like opening in the hut door was always soothing. Until he remembered its ability to kill, that is. The thought stuck until the snow melted, and this winter he had simply come to terms with it, trying not to give it too much attention. After all, his tribe was running smoothly this winter, with plenty of food for most, and new-established trades that would supply them further come spring. These were comforting thoughts, but were interrupted suddenly, by a child's voice. It was faint, but he recognized the word as one of his names, one few used. Ayasha? But she had never called him that, nor did she even know it, or so he thought. It wasn't difficult to hear the stress that the word was uttered with, and the Chief rose swiftly and jogged outside, glancing around himself for clues before moving towards the center of the village. He might be old, but he could still hear which direction a sound came from.

It took him only minutes to read it and he halted to glance around himself again, trying to find the source, but no calling child was to be seen. The scent gave him clues; she was here, a young one, and strangely familiar-smelling, but not. He looked around again, increasingly alerted. Lowering his eyes to the ground, suddenly he spotted a tiny figure collapsed, and now he ran over. The girl was so young! How had she gotten here? What was it with these pups that came wandering to their borders alone in the middle of winter? Carefully, but decisively, the male scooped her up in his arms and watched the treacherous and snowy path ahead as he trotted over to the Town Hall; it would be warmer inside, and then he could check on her. Only when he was inside did he think to speak to the girl; he had not even checked if she was conscious. The Chief walked over to one of the shelves which held all sorts of things that e stored there, quickly pulled out a blanket from a pile he had made himself and draped her in it. He still held her, though, making sure she was warm through his own body heat. Turning his eyes on her, for the first time he studied her, and what he saw was striking. Surprised, and still in medic-mode, the male spoke without thinking. "Who are you?" There was no thread in his face or voice, simply urgency and curiosity. Shaking his head, he remembered to ask her questions that were more relevant to the current situation. "What happened? Did you come by yourself?" If she had a friend somewhere, they might need help as well.

It is fine, I figured as much *licks back* Your baby as promised; 508 words

The girl was exhausted and her mixed heritage put her on the petite side. Not that she knew herself to be mixed. She simply thought that she was the same as the rest of her family. Okay, well maybe her eye color was a bit different. Hers didn't happen to be quite as blue as the other females in her family, it was more of a green than a blue. But it was still close enough, right? Teal still had that hint of blue to it. It wasn't like the differences made themselves out to be too obvious. For all she knew her father was a red wolf just as all the others in her family. The similarities were there so that she didn't question it. And it wasn't like anyone told her any different simply because species didn't matter among the Great Tribe.

For a moment she wondered if her call would be heeded. Maybe her uncle was out on a vision quest? It certainly wasn't entirely unheard of. Or even out purifying himself. Rituals and customs had to be followed. She really didn't want to disturb and interrupt those but she didn't know who else to turn to. She had no idea who else to call to. Who else could possibly help her. But right now she was willing to take anyone that would come along. She had started to regret leaving Meda all by herself. But if she hadn't left then who would have ever known that they were out there and needed the help?

The young girl allowed her eyes to slip closed for a moment and in that span of time the whole earth shifted away from beneath her and she was floating. Then sensation only felt to last for a short amount of time before sudden warmth surrounded her. At this she forced her eyes open instead of giving into the thralls of comfort and sleep. When she opened her eyes she stared up into a face that was familiar and yet unfamiliar all at the same time. "Tsugi!" It just had to be! "Edusti Tsugi!" The words were cried out happily. The man that he had come to find was right here. He was holding her. For a moment she had forgotten what had stressed her out.

That was at least until his questions had served to remind her. "Sakari Yakone." She gave her name then after a pause she decided to add on her last name as well, though it should be a given by this point. "Amara." After all who else would call him uncle except for family? "No, Meda. She needs help. We went to sleep but she never woke up. I tried to wake her and she wouldn't wake up. You have to help her." At this she finally had started to squirm to try and remove herself from the other's embrace. She had to show him where to go. She couldn't just leave Meda all alone. Not when Meda had come all this way with her.

Wooh! "Ayule" = child Smile

The girl responded as if out of sleep, her eyes opening only a little before they were wide open and she repeated one of his names. He stared at her for that short moment, dumbfounded, for she repeated the name again with the title of 'uncle'. What in the world was this? Finally she gave a name, though it made no connections in the male's mind. Beginning a smile, the girl suddenly added his own surname to the bunch of names, and he realized something he did not understand. Whose was she? The last he had seen of his siblings, none of them had children, most hadn't even had mates (some of them were so damn slow). They were 6 altogether, and he had been the first to mate with Mischka. Some had followed with courtships but none had settled; it would seem that in his absence at least one of them had found heir senses. The fact that she apparently was his niece, yet out here alone (it was not like his siblings to leave a child unattended), could only increase his worry. His face betrayed him and displayed it openly, because while he cared for every living thing and adored children, he had grown up with his siblings, and some he had even helped raise. Dawali drew is breath to urge her to tell him the story when she did by herself, speaking the name of someone he didn't know. She squirmed as she spoke, though Dawali's arms were long and did their best to hold her tight. She was much too cold and little to venture out there alone right now. "Calm down, ayule." he urged, hoping she would listen. "You can show me where she is if you promise to stay tucked. It is far too cold, and I don't want you to become ill. I will do the walking and you can tell me where to go." Illness from cold could be the ords of things to treat if it was serious enough. Many died from not having enough respect for Winter. Stepping outside, Dawali grabbed his medic pouch on the way and tried to keep her from getting out of his embrace. She could probably point, or recognize this "Meda"'s scent.

Poor confused Dawali; 505 words

How could he recognize the name when he had been gone from the Great Tribe for years and she was only a few months old. It wasn't unusual that he didn't know about her. But she knew of him because his sister had spoken fondly of him. It was no wonder that she would practically worship him with what she had been told about him. No amount of persuasion could change her mind. It was why her mother had to finally give in and let her go on this journey. Sakari had a strong will and heart. When she set her mind to something she was determined to accomplish the task. Her mother also knew that she would be well taken care of. That her uncle would watch over her and care for her. Sakari's sickly younger brother could have also played a part in the decision as well. Through the many visits of the medicine woman he hadn't gotten better. It was thought that to keep her safe and alive that she may need to be separated from her brother just in case his condition would spread.

His words had her stilling her movements though she couldn't exactly say that she was happy about it. She had to get back to Meda. She couldn't just leave her friend out there all alone. She had been away far too long already. Anything could have happened in her absence. What if Meda had woken up and had gone to look for her? No, they had to hurry. "We have to hurry." She looked up at her uncle with pleading eyes. She couldn't let Meda stay by herself. Come to think of it, Meda's spirit guide had been quiet the day before. It was this companion that had led them on their journey, that had helped them to find the tribe where Sakari's uncle was.

"The south, we came from the south. We didn't make it to the borders yet because Meda thought that we should rest for the night and sleep. She was worried about the weather and that it would get too bad to continue should we have had tried to complete the journey at night." She explained the situation to Dawali as she was being carried. "There, out there." She lifted a paw to point with, motioning towards the area past the borders where the snow had piled up. It was still a distance from the border but it could be spotted at least. The area probably would have never been looked in should no one have known that they were out there. And well no one did know. It wasn't as if Dawali had expected their approach. Sakari could have stayed out there and yelled all she wanted to and it wasn't likely help would have come. It wasn't as if the girl had the strongest voice around, not since she was one to raise it often. She was a sweeter and quieter young thing. She didn't like yelling and fussing and fighting.

Yah and now he will be sad ;_; Also, Sakari can see Gvihita, if you want. I'm writing that Meda is dead; I assume this was the intention, yes? Let me know if I should change it :3
OH and spirit guides don't die or disappear when their canines die, since they are separate beings with a free will, so if you want you could like.. have Meda's stick around or something? It'd be cool Big Grin

He moved swiftly, though the snow was not his friend and his coat was thin for winter. He had no thoughts for the cold just then, and he thanked the spirits that his legs were lanky for his kind; they helped him traverse the thick snow quicker. Gvihita appeared out of nowhere and screeched from above, circling some location ahead. He had known her for four years now, and he could to some degree read her sounds. Her facial expression never changed, having no facial muscles to change it with, but her calls did, and sometimes it was as if he could sense her feelings. He read her now, and he was worried for the Meda girl from this, for the bird seemed distressed. Sakari promted him forward and he put some extra effort into it, paws very nearly plowing through the already downtrodden layers of snow. The pup also provided him with background information, but as soon as she pointed towards a little mound of snow ahead, looking like a makeshift snowhole shelter, he forgot what she was talking about and simply aimed for it with speed.

He didn't stop to think to leave the girl outside. After all, she was wrapped in a blanket, but it simply wasn't on Dawali's mind. Sakari's tracks were still easily visible in the snow around the little mound, and Dawali quickly found himself inside with Meda in view. Still, he said nothing to the pup he held, his medic brain too focused on the task at hand. He placed the girl on the ground for a short moment, and with experienced movements he crawled to the girl and placed his fingers on her neck, searching for the feeling of that surge of life. If the blood was not moving, there was little left to do. Meda felt cold under his two fingers, and when he found no life there he checked her arms and legs too; there were many places to search for life. He found nothing, however. The place smelled of the Great Tribe, and with it the scent brought memories that the Chief could not ignore. The fact that she had died here, so close to his tribe, and so pointlessly; it was a tragedy, and a personal one as well. Dawali sighed heavily now, disappointed and saddened. He never knew Meda, and he did not even know of this niece that she had brought here, but for that he was eternally grateful. The fact that she was of his own people could only magnify the impact of the experience, and did not lessen the burden of being here so far away from the rest of the Great Tribe. Introvert for a moment, the Chief said nothing, though he picked Sakari up again. He would not have her freeze to death as well.

Awwe, poor Dawali. And yes, Meda is dead. And okay cool, I just thought the spirits guides went and did their own thing after their canine died but that would be cool to have hers stick around and Sakari can have and invisible friend to talk to that watches over her and keeps her safe *will have to figure out what Meda had so Sakari could see*; 506 words

Sakari tilted her head at the sound of the screech, looking up to the sky above. "Hey, a bird!" She called out, staring up at it in amazement. It reminded her of the bird that her mother had. It wasn't that it was the exact same but it was close enough to think it related. The larger wingspan than the tiny birds that had flitted around before the snow had started falling and they had disappeared but her mother's bird had remained. Sakari knew what spirit guides were of course but she didn't realize that other's didn't usually see them if they weren't their own. But perhaps that corresponded with her pure spirit and strong will. She was young but wise enough for her age, grasping onto the stories she was told in her youth and already knowing the direction that she wanted her life to take. Only a few months old and she already knew that she wanted to follow in her uncle's footsteps. She wanted to be as great as he is, half as great wouldn't work for her.

She looked back ahead again as they reached Meda. When she was placed down she couldn't help but to crawl close again. She gripped the blanket in her teeth so that she stayed wrapped up as she moved, not wanting to get in trouble, and crawled over to Meda. She whined as she nudged her head beneath Meda's trying to will her to wake up. She placed a paw on Meda's cheek so that she could lick at the other's face, trying to coax her into life. She had no idea that her friend had passed on while they slept. That she would never get to play with Meda again. She didn't realize that Meda had given up her own life to make sure that Sakari made it.

The small girl squeaked as she was picked up. "What about Meda? She is cold too. We can't leave her." She shifted around in Dawali's embrace so that she could place her forepaws on the male's chest in order to be able to look up into his face. Her own gaze was begging and pleading with him to tell her that Meda will be okay. That her friend was going to wake up soon so that they could play. She was whining again and trying to lick at Dawali's face, trying to get him talking again. She didn't like the somber mood that the other seemed to have taken on. The excitement of having found her uncle and being in a new place was gone. Her uncle was being entirely too quiet for her liking. Something bad was going on and she could feel it. The little girl could be perceptive but still she was trying to cling to the hope that Meda would get better. Having taken nearly a month long journey with someone made it hard to just let them go. They had made this trip together so Meda just had to stay with her.
