For Ever! 515 words.

The air continually grew colder, and as a result, the King did not venture very far from the home he shared with his mate and their young children. Noah and Liam were both far too young to be journeying too far away from the house in such cold conditions, and Vigilante was not willing to risk their safety and their health. He knew that the borders would still be protected, even if he were remaining close to home for his young children, and even though he knew that Haven would not be venturing too far from his own house except to quickly patrol the borders and to go to the stables as he did often. Haven's mate was due to deliver any day now, the King suspected, so he did not think that Haven would be willing to leave her side much either. He did not blame the Knight.

The sun was shining warmly and its rays reflected brightly off the snow outside. Vigilante sat by the front door of their home, muscular secui form hardly moving. He was watching his sons play a short distance away, romping together in the way that brothers surely did. The dog King would not know that for certain, of course, as he had only had his sister, and on top of that, their upbringing had been far from normal. Of the two, Noah seemed to have the more dominant personality, and Liam was more than thrilled to follow his lead in whatever game they were playing. They were just about a month old now, and the King enjoyed watching their personalities grow over time.

"Boys," Vigilante called, catching them as they began to wander a bit too far away for his liking. The two puppies moved clumsily through the snow to come to sit in front of their father. He studied them for a moment, their bicolor eyes reversed. Liam's left eye was green, his right eye as blue as their mother's. Noah was the opposite, with Ayita's lovely blue adorning his left eye, and the jade of their father's in his right. "I told you not to wander too far," he chided. "We'll go inside if you can't behave. So, are you going to go too far?" The two boys shook their heads quickly, confirming that they would stay close, and the King settled in to watch them play as they ran off together.

It was enjoyable to have puppies in the house again, even if Ayita was very tired with motherhood. There had been a small number of puppies in their home in the past—Amaranth, Kable, Ever, and Kambujiya—but all but Kam had moved out, and even the small orphaned boy had been spending much more time out of the house, and he would be in the adult ranks soon. Vigilante had missed having young ones around the house and having Noah and Liam was a great source of joy for the dog mutt, who had been hoping for many years to one day father his own puppies. He loved them a great deal.

It was cold. That much could already be distinguished even under the thick, wooly blanket that lay over the mates. Ocean eyes of the girl’s were open and staring intently out the large window facing the turning tide. Her fingers flexed against the grip of her mate’s and slowly she slid out from under him. No matter how much the cold mornings seemed unwelcoming, Ever had to stick to her plan.

She planted a gentle kiss on Ezra’s ear and ventured into the main part of the cabin. Winter seemed to seep into all of their small windows and chill the youth right past her silver coat. She let a shiver rack her body while she washed her fur carefully from the basin of fresh water on the counter. It was warm unlike the air. Ever dried herself quickly and fluidly traveled around the shack to tidy things up before she left. A chest in the corner was finally brought to her attention.

Rolls of cotton cloth slipped between her fingers as she dug around for something appropriate for the day’s events. She finally settled on a green dress that subtly complimented her hips. The straps were thin, but she addressed it with Ezra’s black scarf. It smelt like him: warm, and comforting. Reaching over the odd shaped table, Ever grabbed her satchel and threw it across her shoulder in one graceful movement.

There were more things adorned in her red mane than usual. Just before leaving, she had added a green feather with black tips along with her natural feathers. She couldn’t help thinking she was starting to look alike an apothecary. The thought made her smile as she opened and closed the door silently and stepped out in to the bright world.

Snow drifts freckled the ground like the white spots on a deer’s back. Another layer had been added last night which caused her weak shadow to nearly disappear in the unevenness of the blanket. Saphraine’s golden coat stood out starkly in the grayness of the winter forest. Predictably, he had been grazing nearby and as soon as her footsteps grew closer, his head shot up. Ever rubbed her hands along his back to brush off some unaware snow. He nickered sweetly and finished the sparse grass he had found.

Lunenberg was a ways away, but on horseback it didn’t take more than an hour. She found the house easily; after all Ever had lived there was the majority of her life in Miracles. But what she wasn’t prepared for was what she saw. Outside was her adopted Father, sitting comfortable in the front of the house intently watching pups. Yes pups. The sight of them sent a fever through the girl. She stopped to admire them carefully before approaching. Quickly, she straightened her dress to a crisp and flattened the wild curls around her face. It was a self-conscious motion that the girl produced.

Saphraine sighed comfortably as they slowly trudged through the snow. Ever concentrated on the gentle movement of his new eagle feather in his forelock. Through the grapevine, the adopted daughter had heard her Mother was pregnant. Not too long ago had she discovered the same conclusion with her friend, Princess. And suddenly Ever was glad she had come to renew her long overdue visit.

Though his mind did not stop churning thought after thought, the dog mutt King remained as vigilant as ever. His watchful gaze never left the two very young boys that were playing a little ways away, even while his adopted children passed through his mind in turn. Though they had never had a close relationship like the one he shared with Amaranth, Vigilante wondered what had become of Kable after he had chosen to leave Cour des Miracles with his father. Leroy had never been the ideal father, and Vigilante had not been happy to hear that he was taking Kable with him. All he could hope was that things had turned out well for them, wherever they had ended up.

Dark ears swivelled forward at the approaching sound of a horse moving through the thick layer of snow that covered the ground. At first he thought that it might be his own stallion moving to join them in front of the house, for the horse spent his time in the back, free to roam. Nadherne simply chose to remain a companion to the King. Jade eyes quickly found the source of the sound, a broad smile forming over his alabastor-tipped muzzle. He had been hoping that Ever would visit them soon to become better acquainted with Noah and Liam, and he was glad to see that she had taken the trip over to visit with them all.

"Hello, Ever," he called pleasantly. "Boys, come see Ever," he directed to them, pleased when they listened and scrambled over, both excitedly and clumsily. "Ever!" Liam said excitedly, taking his cue from his father that this visit was something to be excited about. "What brings you this way?" he asked with a warm smile. The visit was unexpected, but he was very happy to see his daughter.

The soft billowing sound of snow surging out and under the hooves of the golden stallion was so quiet it couldn’t be heard in young ears. There was hardly a breeze at all which was encouraged, since this would only harden the cold even more. Even though the sun was shining, the air was crisp, colorless and pale. Ever observed the area with a swift, disinterested glance.

Her eyes once again settled as softly as falling snow upon the puppies. From her high altitude, everything looked a little brighter, happier, it swelled with the same hope she saw from seeing the young wolves. She moved her gaze to Vigilante, eager to see if he approved in what he saw of her. Unknown to why she was so eager to please, Ever let her detail-craving eyes soak in his every action. At first it was a calm expecting expression which moved to delight muddled with slight curiosity. It was all in less than a second, the girl had peeled off the blurry gloss to reveal what was unintended for most to see. Often, it disturbed her to realize how vulnerable everyone was.

As soon as Saphraine had cleared most of the snow laden bushes, Ever let her mouth gradually ease into a smile to compliment her Father’s. She dismounted as soon as she was a safe distance and trudged her way over to the house, her usual grace swallowed up by the snow amount.

Morning, Vigilante. I just came by since my visit is long overdue.

She directed a yearning, apologetic expression at him before continuing.

I see now, that I have missed far to much.

Ever added with an accepting glance at the pups. She gave them a quick look over before murmuring in her Father’s dark furred ear,

Oh, they are gorgeous.

The warmth in her voice reflected in her eyes as she watched the young wolves play together. They were every bit like Vigilante and Ayita. Perfect. The word sent an icy finger down her spine. She concentrated on the familiar rustling of her golden stallion pushing aside frost in search for frozen bits of grass.

It had been far too long since he had seen either of his adopted daughters, as neither had seen their younger siblings yet, he realized. The King hoped that both Ever and Amaranth would begin to spend more time around the house that they had grown in, though he certainly understood that they were both very busy with their own lives and their own respective mates. Certainly, the King thought that he had done a decent job with both girls, for he felt that they were both wonderful wolves and he even approved of their choices in mates, though he did not know either man very well and he thought that they were awfully young to have chosen mates already. However, he recognized that not everyone waited as long as he did to find someone and to settle down, and similarly, some never did.

The caramel-colored dog beamed proudly at the two boys who scampered over to greet the woman he had told them about. Liam was far more excited about Ever's arrival than Noah was, but Vigilante knew that it was simply because the older boy was more serious by nature than his brother was, though the two boys were incredibly close. That was something he had hoped for, especially when there had been only two surviving puppies in the litter. He had been very close to his own sister and he knew that Ayita had been close to Zafier, though he disliked the man greatly. The way he would raise Noah and Liam was very different from the way he had been raised, but regardless, he was glad that they had one another and always would.

"Thank you," he spoke softly to her in response, beaming proudly at the two boys. They both behaved well in the presence of company, sitting clumsily side by side until he gave them a nod and told them, "You may go play again." He watched them run off together through the snow, tripping over the drifts of it, and chuckled to himself. "How is mated life treating you?" he asked, looking to the girl he had taken in so many months prior. She had grown a great deal since then, both physically and in character.

The King had always had a father-like air about him, and the girl was immensely pleased he and Ayita had a set of children their very own. She admired them, side by side, sitting amongst the folds of white. They looked so similar to their parents. Life was much simpler in moments like these.

Ever, herself, could not recall her childhood as well as the next wolf. It was a quality she actually was grateful for, since being a pup at her time was a horrible thing.

Her mother had been expecting the birth, unlike what most think from the girl’s memories, but when the silver female was born alongside two dead siblings and a cherished brother, it was that of a terrible time. Blood was shed and all she could remember was being forced to leave, and watching her unaccustomed sibling and father being forced out of her future. Then the sudden death of her mother before the frightening loneliness.

Vigilante and Ayita had saved her from this unfortunate set of events. They had taken her in when she had had none, and grew up in the house she had returned to today. But that seemed such a long time ago. It felt like the moments she remembered the greatest were those of recent times, not when she was younger and only the threats of the future were faint.

It is much more difficult than I considered,

Ever responded quietly though the boys had already reached a respectful distance.

There is a great deal to worry about, both about the future and about each other,

She wasn’t aware of whether or not her comments made sense, but she supposed Vigilante had already gone through the rough parts of mate ship. When she had met him, he and Ayita had already been together for an amount of time, yet still she wasn’t aware of how much that was.

Strelein had found Ever before the King had, but the flamboyant man had not thought himself capable of taking care of the young orphaned girl on the borders, and so the King had taken her in. He had never once regretted it and he still regarded her as a daughter, though she had moved out long ago to be with her mate. He was glad that they had chosen to remain in the pack and they did not appear to want to leave any time soon. The King hoped that they would continue to make the Miracles pack their permanent home and would perhaps even start a family of their own, though hopefully not before they were entirely ready.

Mateship had not been the easiest thing for Vigilante and Ayita, either, and the King could only assume that all couples went through rough patches. Jade eyes of wisdom watched the two boys play a distance away for a moment, considering what his adopted daughter said, before finally turning to gaze at her once more. She was still very young and it was not unusual that she would not have expected difficulties, as the young very rarely do. Vigilante had been the same; he had not expected any of the problems he had experienced, and even created, in his own life. No one ever truly expected hardships in life, but most faced them.

“But you are happy?” he inquired, genuinely hoping that she would tell him that she was. He wanted only the best for the children he considered his own family. He even hoped that Kable was happy out there, wherever he was, with Leroy, though he had not supported the boy’s choice to leave the pack and his mother and sister. Vigilante had not thought Leroy to be a capable parent, however.

Things were steadily getting more complicated. She thought that once Strelein had found her at the borders half dead, if only, that life would get better. Although the beginning of settling in was rough, Ever had found her knight after all. He had come at her time of need, unexpected, but still there. Ezra was her rope. She had used him to climb out of the dark abyss her past had dug out for her. The man was her drug, her antidote to all of her bad dreams, poisoned thoughts, and break downs she couldn’t control.

She had found herself describing the color of his eyes in her mind with tones of beautiful tints in the real world. All the while living in a fantasy of her own. Even after spending cold nights wrapped in each other’s arms, the girl longed for the smell of his fur. It was like the light that woke her up every morning for her job was a threat to them both.

So naturally, when Vigilante asked of her happiness Ever responded immediately.

Yes, of course,

She found herself wondering, suddenly, what he thought about the idea of her and Ezra’s mateship. It wasn’t the first time the thought occurred, however. Vigilante was not her blood father, barely her guardian anymore, yet she felt like he had one of the biggest impacts on her life. He wasn’t a blurry image in the back of her mind as most parents turned into once children became older. The caramel king was someone Ever cared deeply for as well as Ayita. She worried often about their whereabouts, more now when time with both of them was limited, rather than when she would see them most every night when she was young.

Though, deeply, the silver pristine girl knew that she would have to let go soon. And certainly they both must have been happy with her choice, she supposed. But what could Vigilante do if he was not? Deny her and Ezra’s rights to be happy in life with each other? Ever knew the noble leader would not be so strict as to make such a heartless decision. If he truly was unhappy with the mateship he could have approached her himself. That was only a theory, of course. He could have as well as anyone gone on suffering.

Both of the daughters he had adopted had left the home and found mates so young. The King had not been pleased initially, but he would never have done or said anything to deny them their happiness. Ezra had spoken to him prior to asking Ever to be his mate. It was a small gesture, but it was one that the King would recall in his memory often and one he had appreciated greatly. He was hesitant to think of his adopted daughters as old enough to be mated and to begin their own families, but he knew that this was an unfair thought. They were old enough.

The idea that she might not truly be happy with Ezra was one that had worried him, and he was glad to hear that this was not the case for them. So many mates drifted apart from one another, and he could only assume the incidence of it occurring were higher if they were young. “Then I am glad,” he said genuinely. The King would have wanted nothing more for her, or for Amaranth, to be happy with her decision to take on a mate so young.

She was in love. It was instantaneous, but a wonderful thing. Her life had been fortunate since arriving in Cour des Miracles in more ways than one. After she had met Ezra, things had lifted, fallen, and then soared once again. He was all she needed and he was someone she could not live without. The girl lifted her gaze to her adopted Father’s and smiled.

To see him happy was like candy. He was so admirable, noble, and the perfect form for a father. Ever was overjoyed to find that he had become one. Ayita and he had always had a flexible relationship it seemed to her, since Vigilante worked feverishly with his leader duties. Children would defiantly bring them together.

Ezra and I have built a small bungalow on the beach in the inlet near the stables,

The silver female said, appropriately changing the subject. She said this gently, warmly, hoping that Vigilante would take her comforting hints of them having an open door.

It is quite quiet… lovely actually. I welcome you, Ayita, and Liam and Noah to come visit anytime,

She softened her beaming smile now, realizing she was losing control of her emotions. The girl smoothed a crease out of her dress and adjusted her position.

But how has your life been, Vigilante?

Ever asked before immediately quieting. It was unusual for her to speak so much at a time, being the proper young hybrid she was.

Due to his upbringing and his prohpetic birth, Vigilante had not been allowed the freedom to choose love at a young age. Perhaps that was why he had been worried for both of his girls when they had chosen to take mates so early. The years of being alone had allowed him to experience life, and though he did not wish such experiences on anyone, he felt that it helped to strengthen the way he was able to love Ayita. It was a different kind of love, he assumed, for his young daughters and their mates, but it did not mean that the love between them was any less.

"I would like to see it soon," he said with a smile. He was truly happy for her and he should like to see where she had laid down roots of her own to begin her own family. "I am sure Ayita would like to, as well." He paused for a moment, considering the question. "Everything has been fine," he finally decided on. "There were rough times, and the boys had a stillborn sister... It nearly broke Ayita." The King watched the two young brothers playing in the snow nearby as he spoke, thinking of the little girl that would never have the chance to live life.

She knew she was too young to truly settle down. At almost 2 years of age, it was hard to imagine trading in all the experiences she had had for memories and restricting herself from creating anymore. Of course, with the mateship of her and Ezra, they both knew eventually she would birth children and living in Vigilante’s home or Ezra’s den would not be appropriate. Even without general knowledge, Ever was aware that puppies needed the best environment to grow and develop.

A trill of excitement chilled her thin torso. She looked out over the drifts of white at Liam and Noah, oblivious to anything else but their fun. Would having children be as unbelievably rewarding as the period appeared? Right now, she was not ready for that kind of responsibility, but she would someday. Ever dropped a hand to her stomach and smiled.

Her auburn ears perked when her father spoke again. She listened, as she should, after turning her grey and blue mixed gaze back to his. But the smile she had adorned moments ago, fed by happier thoughts, disappeared at a quick notice. Another child? Ever swallowed painfully and followed her father’s sorrow stare. The young girl would never have seen any of this. A hard breath escaped the girl’s white lips and turned to clouds in the cold air. Stillborn.

The thought chilled her as much as the literal meaning. A respectful silence followed Vigilante’s words before Ever spoke again.

I was not aware … I am very sorry,

She tried not to, but still did imagine the very small form of their daughter. Breathless and still. A deep sadness filled her and suddenly more pity for the older couple was strengthened. The girl shook her head, unable to speak more about the terrible subject.

Losing a puppy before it even had time to breathe its first breath was the yin of parenthood, and Vigilante had mourned for his lost Ame appropriately. The time for that was no longer, and as he watched the two lively boys playing in the snow, he tried to think of nothing but the good now. Ever's sympathy was appreciated. It was only logical she would not know, as the stillborn girl had not been broadcasted. "Thank you," he said simply, leaving it at that simple statement.

"I am glad that you came to visit," he spoke in a brighter, wisdom-filled jade gaze returning to meet her bright, youthful gaze. He saw a light in her eyes that he knew was not in his own. She was so young and beginning her own journey in life, taking on a mate and making something of herself in the pack now. He was proud of her, and though he hoped it was so, he did not know if he had a part in how she was now. The dog King smiled to his adopted daughter, curled tail wagging gently in the snow beneath him.

End here?

Ever smiled when her father changed the subject; gently expressing his gratitude upon her arrival.

Anytime, the days may return tougher each morning but I will always make time for family,

The words burned slightly, like ice was filling her lungs. Her mother would never see Cour des Miracles. She would never meet Ezra. The youth tried harder everyday not to think about her past in the valleys. It was the point of starting a new life, forgetting her father and brother. She had finally settled, and even further began to shape her life.

The girl found herself staring out again at the youngest boys, flashing their caramel colored pelts in the drifts. She wouldn’t have known what it would be life losing a child, and she hoped she would not learn. Her adopted father was an overly admirable man with an aura of leadership despite his obvious kingship. Ever wondered how Ayita was managing these days, for she appeared absent.

I will come back more often,

The silvery hybrid promised, feeling chilled under the winter breeze.
