Home Is Where the Earth's Heart Is

I am so terrible at RPing!! I used to be good at belting out posts with ease and enjoyment and now it's a struggle. Can anybody offer me advice or at least encouragement? P.s. I will let the replier decide what the odor is and where it is coming from, whether it be from their character or anything else!

NOTE: I have already apologized to the writer of the 'home is wherever i'm with you' thread, but I just wanted to let people know I didn't intentionally almost copy Magnolia's thread title. Honest mistake from my muddled subcontinents. x_x

Chapter 2

The she-wolf leaned on the main entrance as morning light pooled in her eyes and bathed her fur in an orange glow. It was a warm refrain from yesterday's overcast misery. It would be gone soon though, so she soaked ferociously until her body heaved with heat. What torturous pleasure to feel summer's sweet breath amidst the dead of winter!

Pleasure finally gave way to inescapable torture as the sun climbed into the clouds leaving the earth cold and dark. Flint was no exception. She too climbed into her dark cave home to escape the outside. She was one of the lucky few in the world with a home in the heart of the Earth.

As she scurried like a pudgy little mole through the hallways she ran her paws against the walls and enjoyed the scratchy yet flowing music it created. She hummed quietly to the tune not minding that her voice complemented the sound of fingernails scraping rock.

She was headed towards the pack's common room, but she stopped short when a new odor shimmied through her nostrils and gripped her attention. The scratchy flow of claw-on-wall ceased and she focused with still silence on the mysterious odor floating through the tunnel...

The morning's warmth and light were forgotten as the opposing shadows of cave life took over...

ooc;; <333 hallo!

He'd settled into the new rank of Marbas nicely, if he did say so himself. Of course, he knew there were weak areas that he had to work on- more specifically his throwing weapons were pretty piss poor. He could throw the knives made especially for this kind of combat, but the accuracy was shocking. Charles Stone hadn't trained his sons in long distant battle and therefore both of the Stone boys were weak with a bow and throwing knives. He was also pretty bad at the slingshot, but that wasn't too much of a problem. He supposed that the whole point of advancing in a rank tier was so that you learned more about your trade, and if you were already the best you couldnt learn any more. He didnt have any throwing knives, but he was planning a trip to Halifax soon to see if he could find any. Perhaps he could tempt Demi into coming with him.

The young warrior was not exactly a heavy sleeper, nor did he sleep that often. So when he did, it was always for longer than necessary, but light. His den was the first one you came to when you turned into the main section of dens, then came Viking, Liev and then Demi. At first the black wolf had been unhappy with his neighbors- Viking was brutal and if Teddy was to be honest with himself, the whole 'one eye' thing kind of creeped him out. Plus the man truely did up to his namesake, he was loud and rude and obnoxious, not to mention smelly. Of course, the Stone male would never had said anything to the bone-white man because he rather fancied keeping his head. But that was as far as that went. He wasn't too bothered about Liev being close, Teddy was learning to like the Russian wolfs company.

So sleep was where one would have found the Marbas on the sunlit morning, buried beneath mounds of warm animal fur. There was something so primal about the man in his sleep, the tenseness of his muscles that said he was just resting his eyes and nothing more. Of course, the stench that Teddy had originally thought was just Viking was beginning to irritate his sensitive nasal system. A groan announced his waking and the man flung back his covers to reveal a mostly naked body. Even in sleep he had strapped a dagger to his ankle for good measure. Pulling on a comfortable pair of combat trousers and a heavy t-shirt Teddy kicked open his wooden door and glanced over to Vikings abode. Oddly enough, the strange scent did not come from his living quarters.

Turning away the man followed the scent until he reached the common room. It was a large room, big enough for the whole pack to fit in comfortably and much more. It didnt have a lot in it at the moment but Teddy planned on changing that. There was however, another wolf in here. Teddy hadn't at first seen the black, white and grey mottled woman. But as his eyes made a predatory sweep over the room they came to rest on her pretty form. The charming smile that found its way to his lips was a customary smile given to anything without a Y chromosome. However, the odour was beginning to irritate him and he approached with a scowl on his face instead.

"What on God's earth is that smell?"

He questioned, glancing around to see if Scorpius or his troublesome cousin had rolled in poo or something. Having noted that it was just the two of them, Teddy was stumped. Glancing back at the mottled female he smiled once more, hoping he didnt offend her with his scowl. It wouldnt be too tragic if he did, but he always wished to make a good first impression.

From somewhere among the pack chambers she heard the dampened creak of a door- a sound she was not yet used to -and jumped out of her skin. It was followed by solid footsteps she did not yet recognize. It sounded as if a giant approached, but Flint wasn‘t ready to meet someone yet larger than Liev or Naniko. Her stomach churned sickeningly as she merely stood there awaiting what may come. The soft thud grew louder until she was forced to gulp back a ball of fear. She waited… and waited. The sound was upon her, and the scent of multiple furs filled her nose, but she saw nothing! Flint jumped out of her skin for a second time when a voice like a volcano erupted from the lamp-flickering room. She squinted here and there until she finally made out the blurred white of the speaker‘s markings, but (to her relief) she could not make out the exact size or shape of his figure. Black and mostly black wolves had quite an advantage in the cave‘s lack of light, especially against the she-wolf‘s weak eyesight.

“Um, the smell. I don't know but I think it's coming from somewhere closer to the storage rooms over there..." She turned instinctively to the right where her nose told her to look, and confirmed with a nod. "Yes, it's wafting out from there." So strong it was that it was almost physically present. She could practically see the pungent, death-like waves rolling through the atmosphere in shades of puke green and decayed brown and dried-blood red. The odor tantalized the she-wolf, who lived in a world of rich smells, and she severely craved to discover the mystery that befuddled the both of them. "I'm Flint. Are you coming?" Something deep within the girl had taken over, and she made her way to the storage room entrance without so much as glancing back at the terrifying, mostly invisible male. She had all but forgotten the predatory stench coming off of his character, physically and verbally, thanks to the likewise stench she now investigated.

ooc;; maybe a dead racoon in the food storage room? haha <333

He could smell the stench of fear before he could even really see the girl at all. It was ironic that she was scared of the man in the dark, mostly because she was right to be scared. Or at least, she would be well within her rights to be scared if she were male and trespassing. But she was Anatheman, she was family by all standards. Naniko had accepted her into the pack and all Anathemans shared at least a little bit of blood. It made them all family, made them all connected in a way that was irreversable. If one was to ever leave for some reason, but chose to return, they would always be welcomed back with no need for the formalities of joining in the first place. They could simply waltz into the pack dens and settle once more. That was what family did for each other, and the fear coming off the female right now was a little disheartening.

Black ears flashed forward when he caught the sound of her beating heart. It was so loud he could hear it across the chasm that they stood in and a soft chuckle escaped from him. Perhaps his harsh tone had put her in this state of fear. But for one who never really got enough sleep, being woken up due to a stench in their pack dens was something that had really pissed him off. And besides, it would probably bring more Anatheman's from their hovels soon- nobody wanted to have that smell hanging around for a few more days. It was awful. Her timid tones came to him, answering the barked question that had come just moments ago. She spoke twice before he answered, turning his head towards the storage room to confirm this as well.

"Well then, we'd best go and investigate. Wouldn't want to anger Naniko by stinking out her dens more than necessary, would we?"

His voice came much more soft than the last time, with the slightest hints of teasing in there. He could see this female being more of a little sister than a potential lay, so he kept his filthy mind in check as he walked forward towards the reeking storage room. Her voice came again, announcing her name and asking him whether he was coming. He nodded in return to her demand although she probably didnt see. In the cover of darkness he decided to shift into his lupus form- she was much further below him and she would probably freak if he stepped into the light towering. Of course, his lupus form was large as well, and well muscled. But there wasnt a lot he could do to help that. Coming to walk beside her, he spoke in the same softer tone as before.

"Its nice to meet you Flint. I'm Theodore Stone... although a few people are allowed to call me Teddy."

Most people always thought his name was ironic- there was really nothing cute and cuddly about him, in any shape or form. But it was a shorter version of his name and he didnt mind too much when his closer acquaintances called him that. He had no real 'friends' right now- he trusted Naniko with his life and he had lain with Demi in Halifax. But that didnt mean they were his friends. He was tempted in getting to know Liev a little better- the man was similar and very different to Teddy's own nature at the same time. Like the balancing of scales. They moved towards the storage room, wondering what they would find there.

The raccoon could be crammed up somewhere behind something, so they have to hunt it out.

Once arrived she made overly dramatic gagging noises and covered her nose. Being at ground zero was a lot harder to deal with than being a hall away from it. Odoriferous molecules traffic-jammed her already sensitive nostrils and confused her. The smell was that of feces and guts and rot and delicious food and dirt and rock and stale air and Theodore-musk and everything in between."JESUS, Theo, I have never smelled anything worse." Luckily she had not noticed the new nickname she deemed him with otherwise she might worry incessantly if he minded.

She looked around and saw nothing but blurry shapes peeking out from blackness. "Can we get some light? There have to be matches around here. I think I smell some torches in that corner, she walked to the respective corner and grabbed one with a satisfactory smile, "There. Matches...matches...matches. BLAAAHG CAN'T SMELL WORTH SHIT." She was very frustrated by being nose-handicapped, since it was always her most reliable sense. In regular circumstances she could have definitely smelled out a box of matches by now. She huffed and turned to where the darkness-cloaked man stood to see if he knew of any matches.

The stench was coming out of the cold storage room in wafts and it was beginning to overwhelm the man. He didnt know what to do and the little female beside him seemed to be running out of air. On another day, in another light, this probably would have been hilarious to the man. But it had disrupted his sleep and now he was unable to go back to sleep until he knew it was out of their home. They both moved forward with caution but trying to aim for haste- while they were both a little concerned about what was in there they also really didnt want to smell it anymore. She spoke, calling him Theo as Demi did. He wondered about that, he'd always thought his nickname amusing and ironic. However, he had to agree with what she was saying as he flung his arm over his face, burying his nose in the crook of his elbow.

"Its disgusting..."

He coughed out as the moved further into the stinking lair. It was horrid but it also had to be dealt with. He cringed as the little mottled female dove into the corner, shouting something about a light. If he had been brave enough he would have scented the air and found out where it was coming from. As it happened there was something so disgusting that there was no way he was going to stick his face any closer to that. He wondered briefly whether it had been planted here by an Inferni hate-wisher, they hadnt been too happy when the coyote had been delivered to their borders. However, the little female asked about matches and he shook his head softly. He didnt have any.

"I dont have any... but there's a torch back there that's lit..."

He said, quickly running back to retrieve the light source. He almost didnt go back- the air was cleaner here and the smell was less once he got over it. However, it would stink out the whole of the cave system soon and then there would be a problem. Gritting his teeth he moved back and into the stinking cold storage room. Handing the light to Flint he lit the second of the torches before surveying the room. He couldnt see anything right now. Taking the torch back he moved around the room, hopefully finding the culprit.
