Leap Frog, Leap

Tired eyes opened slowly, taking the few minutes that she knew it took for her eyes to adjust to the light before finally parting them all the way to meet the light of the day. Fuzzy black muzzle opened to release a yawn, salmon colored tongue protruding just an inch or two before she finally closed her mouth with a tiny click. It was morning, a cool one at that, and it meant that her parents were most likely scurrying around in search of breakfast for the family and her siblings would soon be waking also, if they weren't already. Huffing quietly, Ember rolled herself from her back to her stomach, gathering her legs beneath her to push her body up to stand. A short stretch, a quick look around, and Ember was out and away from the den for a round of morning play.

It was one of those mornings that she'd gotten up just early enough to catch some of the other critters out and about, namely the first thing that caught her eye, the frog. The young girl paused a moment, watching the small green creature as it leaped mindlessly along, hardly paying attention to it's spectator. It seemed boring, really, just wandering about like that, and Ember was suddenly certain that it was in need of some entertainment. In a flash she was after the creature, barking like mad and chasing after it with each leap it took, which grew more frantic as Ember drew closer. The girl, of course, had no plans to hurt the thing, she only intended to give the creature the enjoyment of playing, which was why she kept after it, barking and giggling as she went along.

_____ Kansas heard a stirring in the den, and wondered if maybe his mother was going out to catch them something for breakfast. But it wasn’t quite as warm in the den as it was when she was with them, so he was momentarily puzzled. He grunted with a bit of annoyance and turned over onto his back, his eyes opening just a tad. He finally caught a glimpse of Ember, knowing it was her due to the dark fur; she was exiting the den, off to play. It was sure cold this morning, and all he wanted to do was sleep until it warmed up again, as he was sure it would. He was a little afraid of what the chill would do to him, for it wasn’t comfortable; that certainly meant harm would come to him somehow.

_____ But he couldn’t see himself getting back to sleep any time soon. Occasionally he could anticipate things like that. So he rolled back onto his belly and stood, making his way out of the den after he’d done so. He pressed his nose to the earth in search of his wayward sister. It wasn’t long before he’d tracked her down, pouncing after a frog. This looked fun, and so for a moment he forgot his childish worries and grinned, galloping after her. He saw that she was intent upon capturing the poor creature, so he held himself back from tackling her as he’d wished. Instead, he whispered into her ear, “Whatcha doin’?

Hi, I'm only a month behind!

After a few moments of chasing the frog she thought it quite fair if she gave the thing a bit more of a chance to get ahead, so instead of charing right after it she slowed herself, allowing it to continue on but never taking her eyes off of it. What poor Ember didn't know was that she wasn't giving the poor thing fun at all, rather, she was scaring the daylights out of it. It was about that moment that Texas had caught up to her, whispering to her, and her excitement only grew. "Ahm playin' wiff 'im." She stated in response, turning her head for only a short moment to look at her brother before her eyes shifted away and went back in search of the frog. "He was lookin' bored so ahm playin' wiff 'im." Just like momma and papa played with them when there seemed like nothing else in the world to do.

"Whatchu doin'?" It was a silly question to ask, as it was quite obvious what her brother was doing, but she felt the need to know anyways. Had he come to just see what she was doing? Did he come to play a game? "Y'wanna help me play wif 'im?" Certainly it would make things even more enjoyable, the small creature could be chased from two sides and it would be double the fun of the game they were playing already.

It's fine!

indentTexas also failed to recognize that they were not giving the frog a good time at all. He, however, saw it as his playing with his siblings – getting closer to them in their collaberative fun. It was no different with this frog – maybe, he hoped silently, they would become friends with him. It was always exciting to have a new playmate, wasn’t it? And perhaps the creature was lonely! He grinned at it, pausing alongside his sister as they let it hop desperately away from them, hiding in a clump of grass. Luckily, Texas would keep an eye on this area in case their little buddy tried to escape.

indent I’m playin’ wiff him, too. And I’m playin’ wiff yous. He laughed quietly, reaching over to gnaw on his sister’s ear. Though he was closest to Firefly, he at times felt more connected to Ember, for some reason he couldn’t name. He didn’t know that this was because the two were most alike out of all their siblings. He crouched, still eyeing the grass where he knew the frog lie in wait for them to ambush it. Ember, he in there. We won’ hurt ‘im, will we? he asked, finally a bit concerned with the frog’s safety, simply because he realized that it was smaller than them and could be crushed by teeth and claws.

Maybe they could accidentally squish it and be all emo and stuff? XD

If play was to be had then Kansas was always the one to find for it, at least that was what she thought. Firefly was the one to cuddle up and talk with, share things with, and Icarus with his brilliant ideas were always the best to plan things. She didn't quite understand how different they all really were and yet they all managed to be close, a happy little family, really. Giggling just a bit as Kansas took hold of her ear, she gave a playful nudge and then turned her head back toward the direction where their friend had hidden himself. She hadn't seen it move since then, which meant it had to be there still, so she wasn't at all worried that they'd lost him for good. Besides, why would he want to leave the ones that were playing with him?

"'course we won' hurt 'im." She said with a nod, confident in that fact. It wasn't ever her intention to hurt anyone or anything which, unfortunately for her, immediately made her think that nothing would get hurt just by thinking that. Without another thought she released all the pent up excitement, making a sudden, though short, leap toward the small mound of grass where the frog was hiding, giggling all the while. When her paws touched down the frog shot out in a flash, hopping back toward her brother. "'ere he comes!" She yelled out, turning not-so-nimbly to head in the same direction as the frog.

Yeah, that sounds funny. Tongue

indentHe’d never really thought he was very playful. Maybe it was just one of those things about himself that he didn’t realize yet – he did love to play; it always helped him forget his worries. Firefly, though, was the one to go to for a good time, in his opinion. She always had wonderful ideas about what to do, be they troublesome or tame. Playing with Ember made him think of his lost twin more wistfully, as Ember was the only sister he had left. But maybe the dark girl could help him feel like the void inside him wasn’t so large.

indentEmber’s reassurance made him laugh; he felt the weight of the small worry lift from his chest. She slid past him toward the tangle of grass where the frog lay, waiting for them to continue their game of tag. She pounced, but the small creature slipped from her grasp easily and went hopping toward Kansas. He wanted to impress Ember by catching the frog, and maybe give the little creature a good time as well. The creamy boy slid back into pouncing position, and when the frog was close enough, made a flying leap toward it. He felt the soft body beneath his paws, and when he looked, it was still intact and the critter was fine.

indent I gots ‘im, Emba! He proudly picked the creature up by its hind leg, where it struggled fervently. Look, ‘e dancin’! You wanna hold ‘im?
