Beneath a gray sky

Hello (: I just realized that they're almost exactly the same age! WC- 426

She was enveloped by a world of gray. The only light that filtered through the trees encircling her was mottled and dull, not clean and yellow, even though it was morning. From where it peeked out from behind the treetops, the sky was colorless. Even the girl's mood was a little overcast, and as she picked at a bloody cut on her paw she imagined herself to be inhaling ashes. Gray ashes that choked her throat and stomach and filled her head with clouds.

Bindu sat, leaning against a pine, with her neck curved to assess the gash on her left front paw pad. While maneuvering through a bed of rocks near a river her paw had sliced- and, while painful, at least it was clean, so she told herself with a frown. The teen had been forced to shift to optime, where her injury was annoying at the worst. There wasn't much more that she could do but cradle the afflicted hand and try to keep it from freezing. The cold would have dulled the pain, but Bindu was afraid of losing the feeling in her hand.

She drew her knees up to her flat chest for warmth, carefully wedging her fists between her stomach and thighs. Now more than ever, Bindu craved a blanket, or even some human clothes, like some shifters wore. Her pelt was a wiry canvas of gold, russet, umber and white -it was ugly to her, but, more importantly, it was thin. Much too thin for her to function comfortably in winter's frigid clutches. The wolfdog remembered the days spent playing in the scorching desert sun. Those days were clearly far, far away. The world of yellow had been replaced with one of gray.

At first, the wolfdog had fallen in love with the quiet woods in this territory; the tall pine trees felt like they were protecting her, shielding her weakness. But she felt her emotions draining away, lost to the grayness, with each day past. Her hurt was gone, the anger and fear diminished to a flickering flame, but it was replaced with an overwhelming sense of emptiness, like the silent halls of the forest. Bindu wanted to feel something that wasn't the pain in her paw, but something deep inside of her. She was losing herself in this place, and if she remained her frail body would wither and fly away. If she ever had any color, it was slipping away.
