It had been what seemed like forever since she had seen her black friend. She wanted to see him again and play with him. She had been away from his as Saul asked her but she hated being so far away. She liked playing with him and she wanted to be there with him. She found herself playing all by herself in the lands as she waited to go out and see him again, or perhaps for him to come to her. Her ears were always down as she thought of him. She wondered if she was feeling something for him. She wanted to see him but the pup was afraid of his mother and his home. Perhaps one of these days she would find the courage to go back to the place where she first met him. She knew it was still winter and the weather would be cold, but she did not care. She would go to the ends of the earth to see her friends and make sure that she could still have fun in her life. She sat at home and stared outside. The day was young and she was wasting her life away. The girl moved to the door and just stared at it, not too sure what to do.

Melee finally made up her mind. She was going to go see him and there was no one who could stop her. She ran as fast as she could on her paws and towards the place where she first met Scorpius. She tripped so many times but she did not care. She wanted to see him. She came to the river and looked around. She did not see him anywhere. Did he not come back here since the day his mother came to get him at her pack? She sniffed around and looked for her dear friend. ”Scorpius? Scorpius are you here?” The pup folded her ears down as she knew she wasn’t here. She figured he must have been at his home but she had no idea just where that was. She figured she would head in the direction he pointed to when she asked him where his home was. There could be no harm in a bit of exploring while she was looking for him. She soon came to the pup’s territory but she didn’t know it. She wandered around, crouched down close to the ground. She could feel an uneasy feeling as she entered the land. She called out for him again out of fear. She just wanted someone around.

Indeed, Scorpius had not returned to the place he met Melee since that day. His mother had too tight of a hold on him. It was not that Naniko was malicious, but Scorpius loved his mother dearly and never wanted to disappoint her as he had that day. He barely even left the Anathema caves since that day, not wanting to risk angering his mother ever again.

But there was another thing that held him back, too. He had been so preoccupied with his own family that he had not thought much about running off to the place by the river, or to Dahlia de Mai again. It was not that he was not fond of his rust colored friend, but so many of the D'Angelos had amassed here in such a short time that it sent the pup reeling. He barely noticed the passage of days. Especially not when he spent so much time following Harlowe around. He had been better at trailing Harlowe than the man's own shadow. That was, until the day Harlowe turned on him... That was the other reason why Scorpius had not left Anathema. He needed constant care, now, while he healed, and he was in pain too frequently to travel on his own.

Then the blizzard had hit. The pack was relatively safe within it's permanent rocky, subterranean world. But the snow and sleet did serve to chill the caves, and with a chill came more warming fires, and more cooking fires. Fire... Scorpius was once so entranced by it... now he was deathly afraid of it. So the pup kept to the winding corridors of Anathema, rarely entering the dens and various rooms unless all sign of fire had been doused. On occasion someone from his pack would insist that the boy come in and warm up so his ears wouldn't freeze off, so, forced to, Scorpius would sit at the farthest end of the cave and cower in the presence of the evil flame beast.

Today was no different than the others. Scorpius had been seen to by the medic this morning, and now he was off to wander the vein-like construct of the Anathema caverns. The fires were usually deep in the pit of the dens, so Scorpius sulked about the outer hallways. He was passing what once was an entrance but now was half obstructed by snow when he thought he heard a noise.

Curious, the sullen pup padded over to the snow bank that blocked the entrance and began swiping at it with his paws, quickly digging away the top of the snow and peering out of the cave. There, like a beautiful splotch against the snow, stalked the small form of his Dahlian friend. He was wrought with conflicting emotions. He was so happy to see her, his ears perked up and he almost cried out, but with the smile that came also came the stinging pain, and his ears flattened. He backed away from the view hole he had made, shrinking into the shadows before calling out.

Melee,” his voice was a low hiss from within the shadowed cavern. “Melee, what are you doing here? You can't be here. You're gonna get in trouble.”

Melee could not believe that she was here. She did not know about the pack’s boundaries nor knew that she had actually crossed them until she thought she smelled something funny. For the moment she tried to shrug the thought off about her trespassing, but she knew that if a wolf caught onto her scent, they would be chasing after her, especially their alpha seeing as she did not like her to begin with. The girl looked around and began to feel uneasy about the whole thing. It was like there were so many wolves already watching her and they were waiting for the right moment to strike. Her ears folded down as she continued on. It was either bravery or pure stupidity that she was continuing into the pack’s territory. She knew she would need Scorpius’ help to get rid of the scent once she left. While she wanted to see him so badly, she also did not want him to get in trouble.

Melee paused as she came to the cave where Scorpius was staying. By now she wanted to just run back home and give up, but if she did she knew her scent would trail back there. She padded along until she heard that voice she knew so well. She followed the voice with her eyes and saw the black pup in the distance. She couldn’t believe she actually found him. The pup raced over to her friend and ventured to give him a gentle nuzzle. ”Oh Scorpius, I can’t believe I found you. I’ve missed you so much. You haven’t come back to play with me.” She lowered her rear and sat down as she looked to him. She wanted to know why he wouldn’t come play with her. She had been lifted of her limit to leaving the pack so she figured now that she was here they could play together again.

Make a wish when your childhood dies.

“Melee, no!” But he was too late. The excited girl did the exact opposite of what he wanted her to do. He wanted her to take his warning and go, to run back off to Dahlia de Mai so she would be safe. But more importantly, he wanted her to run off so he would be safe, so she would not see the hideous scars, scabbed up and half-healed on his face. Instead of listening to his words the fellow pup was so excited to have found her friend that she entered the strange cave and ran right up to him for a nuzzle.

As Melee entered the cavern, Scorpius backpedaled, reeling in horror. He was already within the protective blanket of shadow, but as the auburn girl came closer he tried to slink back even farther, as though in hope that the shadows could just swallow him hole and he could disappear from this place. His ears flattened – a gesture that made him wince, for his left ear had been half burned off and was healing wounds as grave as his face – and when she nuzzled him, he yipped a warning and snapped at her; though careful to not actually bit her.

“Melee, listen to me,” he said in a desperate hiss. He turned, angling his head so the small bit of light that bounced off of his coal fur only shone on his right side, his undamaged side. “Look, it's nice that you came here but you can't just do that.” His crimson eyes turned away, glancing down into the depths of the cavern before turning back to Melee. “You're not welcome in Anathema, Melee. You don't have friends here. I'm not the pup you met by the river that day.”

Indeed, there was something different about the boy now. His demeanor had done a complete one-eighty. Where there once was a brave, boisterous, happy pup now stood a dark, serious, grave child who wanted Melee to go away. He did not want to admit to himself that he was so happy to see her... he just needed her to leave before she saw... How could he convince her?
