The sun was beginning its descent toward the horizon when Ehno finally made his way back to Haven manor. The Marino had been on high alert ever since he learned of the altercation between his sibling and an individual who had recently joined their ranks. The mere thought of it caused the Marino's hair to stand on end and summon the ghost of a growl to his throat. Who would be ungrateful enough to bring violence upon those who gave them shelter, a home? The details of the situation were few and vague at best, but the chocolate-furred male knew he would learn more when the time came. His dear sister needed her rest, and in the meantime he would stand sentinel for the Dreamers, keeping a wary eye out for more trouble. Thankfully, the afternoon had held no trouble for them, and the quiet hours worked well to calm his tense muscles and frantic thoughts.

Four paws carried him up the front steps of the Dreamers' communal home, and he nudged at the handle of the door with his muzzle to let himself inside. Hunger gnawed at his belly, but he ignored it for the time being, his mind already focused on his next move. He traversed through the familiar halls of the manor, taking note of the solemn quietude that had taken root within their walls. His footsteps slowed as he approached the room his sibling had claimed, unconsciously softening the pattering of his feet upon the wooden floors. The door was most of the way closed, and Ehno nudged it forward as gently as he could. He stepped part of the way in the room, amber gaze immediately darting to where Savina lay resting. The sight of his sister in such a wounded state caused an ache to bloom in his chest. "Oh, Savi..." he whispered to himself, ears folding back against his head as he watched her resting form.

The leader of the Dreamers was lost in a haze of pain and grief. A full day had passed since she had partaken in a harrowing fight with the murderess who had slithered her way into their ranks and now the full truth of the situation had sunken into her heart and head. At first there had only been that blinding anger, that need for justice and retribution. All of that was gone now though, flooded out of her during the combat that had left her seriously wounded. Her daughters had pulled the arrow from her shoulder and stitched and bandaged all her other wounds. That was not what hurt the most though, incapacitated as she was. What hurt most was the knowledge that she had lost her son. That horrid beast of a woman had killed him. Now she reaped the fruits of her indecision from before. Savina should have gone after Denali. She should have gone after him and brought him home. She could have saved him, and now he was dead. Killed, because she hadn't been able to make a choice.

Once the delirium from her blood-loss had lifted she had asked Cambria to bring her the mask that she had found in the traitor's belongings, the one that had belonged to her son. It was all there was left of him now. There was no body to bury, that grim sense of closure even denied to her. The woman had curled her battered body around the metal feline mask as if it were Denali and she cried silently, eyes giving birth to the twin rivers of her grief and loss. The joy of Artemis' awakening had been completely snuffed out and she felt hollow inside. There was some, very small part of her that even wished she had died in that fight, that felt she deserved such a fate for failing the boy she had taken in as her own and sworn to take care of.

She had slipped into some fitful sleep, but when she heard faint footsteps in the room and softly whispered words her dulled eyes half opened and head turned to look at who had entered. Her eyes connected with her brother's and tears sprang anew instantly. "I failed him Ehno..." her voice choked out weakly. There was no care or concern for her own physical state, only for that deep rooted loss that now suffocated her spirit.

There were only a few times that Ehno could remember seeing his dear sister in such a state of pain, and those memories could do nothing to make the sight before him seem any less severe. He wanted to help her in whatever way he could, but there was nothing he could do to heal her wounds except give her space and the time to rest. With time her wounds would heal, and the care of her daughters could help speed that along. But for the time being, she was forced to endure. She didn't deserve this. He could only hope that the wretched traitor had it just as bad, if not worse.

Worse still were her emotional injuries. He could see it in her tear filled eyes as she turned to him that it was those wounds that were ailing her the most. These were the sort of wounds Ehno was capable of healing. He could be there to offer her comfort, to hear her woes and to soothe her. The Italian man had done it before, and he would do it time and time again, as long as she needed him. It was his job as her brother, her protector.

Chocolate-colored ears twitched at the sound of her strained words, and they folded back as he caught sight of her tears. He hurried over to her side, nuzzling her gently. Amber-gold eyes caught sight of the familiar mask at her side, recognizing it as belonging to the boy Savina had taken in as her own. The pieces began falling into place within his mind. He knew the boy had gone missing weeks ago, but could this have meant something had befallen the young wolf? No, he didn't wish to entertain the thought. "Do not say that," he chided gently. Ehno settled down at his sibling's side, eyes seeking to meet her own tear-clouded emeralds. "You did everything you could for him."

SadSavi is Sad :[

It pained her brother to see her this way, as it would any good brother. Savina certainly never wished for Ehno to have to see her like this or anyone else for that matter. Still, there had been no other reaction for her to hold onto, no other path to even consider. Her family had been threatened, the sanctity of her pack bond broken. Punishment had been needed and she had delivered, even if the cost to herself had been high. There was no regret for her actions and what she had wrought. The only thing she wished was that she had been able to indefinitely take that devil's life from her. There was a chance that she was perishing of her wounds, but such a thing could not be confirmed, and so her justice was incomplete. A life for a life had not been given in surety, and now it ate it her whole. Even the part of her that believed if she had killed Nuki that this ache in her chest would not be so severe knew the truth: nothing could dull the pain of the loss she had endured.

Ehno quickly came to her side and gave her loving nuzzles. Savina only sobbed softly, the tears flowing more freely. Even such slight movements cause the pain to lance through her and she whined softly. She didn't curse the pain though, for it was simply a due punishment for how horribly she had failed Denali. Her brother settled down next to her, telling her not to say such things. Telling her she had done all she could. Her eyes were closed and she shook her head back and forth. No, she had not done everything. There was so much more she could have done and it could have prevented all of this. "I could have gone after him when he ran away. I should have gone after him. There was nothing I could do for Artemis anyway, and she is fine now, but Denali..." Her voice gave out on her again as her flooded eyes connected once again with the honey hue of her sibling's. "He's dead. Because I did nothing." If she had had the energy to wail she would have. Saying that horrible truth was a pain like no other. The salt tears came like an ocean tide and she had to blink to keep her brother in focus.

Short and late, lo siento.

Savina’s tears were a clear and constant reminder of the physical and emotional pain that freshly plagued her. While Ehno could sympathize with her torment, he could only imagine the extent to which her pain must reach. Her quiet sobs and strained words made that perfectly clear to him. Sympathy was clear on his features, sorrow mixing and deepening his expression as the words sunk in. The death of a child. There could be no greater terror for a parent than that. His sister did not deserve such a torment. The boy Denali didn’t deserve to have his life cut short, either.

He slowly shook his head at her words of self-blame. “You could not have known that this would happen. No one could have.” Ehno himself could have never imagined that such a terrible tragedy would befall their family. It would take a god to foresee such unexpected events, and the Marinos were just as mortal as the other residents of Nova Scotia. Fate had seen fit to remind them of that, in her increasingly cruel ways. “You did what you thought was best.” He knew his words would likely do little to console her, no matter the truth that may lie behind them. Such was the behavior of true, bone-deep grief.

is fine <3

She didn't know how far the news of Denali had spread in the pack. The only souls she knew that had heard it from her own mouth were Kansas, Gotham, and Amata. Whether or not the sad news had spread yet was unknown to her and really in the end it did not matter. Denali was gone whether four knew or a hundred. Nothing would or could change what had happened, just as nothing could divert her guilt and grief. For she knew the truth that she had not uttered to the others. It had not been a short, merciful end for her son. He had been tortured, terrified before the life was finally taken from his young, mutilated body. The weight of that knowledge suffocated her, but she was unwilling to place it upon anyone else. She did not want her other children to know. She especially did not want Artemis to know.

It was true, she could not have known this would happen. Such a thing was impossible. Still, the mother had had her worries of Denali's demise even before it had been confirmed. Though none of her nightmares had reached the true horror of the truth. "No, but I knew he was too young to be out there alone. He didn't know how to fend for himself, not out in the unforgiving winter." Even if Nuki hadn't killed him, the blizzard likely would have. Her brother was right, she had done what she thought was best. "But I was wrong." A mistake that had turned into a fatal one. If only she had been the one to pay the price and not her dear boy though. "And then I let his murderer into our home...and she nearly took another child from me." Her heart constricted when she thought of what could have happened to Parker, of what nearly had happened to her sweet girl. It made bile rise in the back of her throat.

Sorry you have to put up with my continuous delays, luff.

Savina's words of self-blame continued, and Ehno knew there would be little that he could say to make her feel otherwise. Parenthood came with a responsibility that did not fade with time, one that made any little ill touch of fate visited upon the children fall squarely onto the parent's shoulders. The male himself had gotten a taste of that feeling upon learning of the twisted beast his son had become, blaming himself for not being there for the boy to raise him right, steering him clear of the darkness. He understood. So instead of offering more rebuttals that he knew would go unaccepted, he offered his sibling silent support. He leaned in against her and nuzzled her again briefly, letting his actions speak where his words could not.

As she spoke of the murderer, she revealed something that took Ehno by surprise. "Another?" He lifted his head, eyes narrowing in confusion. What else had the vile woman done? Which of his nieces and nephews had she attempted to get her paws on after dirtying them with the blood of the young boy? Dark thoughts seeped their way into his mind, trying to provoke him into playing out numerous possible scenarios in his head. Thankfully, Savina's phrasing revealed that whichever child it had been was alright, but the Marino man found himself holding his breath in anticipation nonetheless. It seemed that the murderous fiend's poison had seeped its way further into their family than Ehno had initially imagined.

no worries, I've been a slow turtle too XD

It was true, there were no words that could convince the woman that this all was not at least partially her fault. No matter what the actual reality of the situation was, her mind had convinced itself of this fact and refused to believe anything contrary. Savina sensed that her brother knew this though, and understood, and she was glad when no more attempts to try and convince her of her innocence came. It was not what she needed or wanted in this moment. Instead, her dearest sibling supplied just what she did need. Someone to lean upon, to listen. Another silent sob shook her as she shifted some weight back against Ehno, gladly accepting of his physical comfort.

Savina had to take a few deep breaths before relaying what Parker had also endured at the hands of the she-devil. It was terrifying to think how close her sunshine child had come to the icy grip of death. "She trapped Parker in some sort of ice pit; almost shot her with an arrow. She was so cold when I found her..." her voice quavered. "I asked her what had happened and as soon as Nuki was mentioned I left Parker with Cambria and went and searched the devil's room. That's when I found Denali's mask..." When the pieces of the puzzle had fallen together and she had exploded in betrayal and rage. It made her skin crawl that they had housed such an evil in their home. Savina should have trusted her first instincts and not allowed her membership into the pack. It had just been a gut feeling though, and she never could have guessed how horrible the woman truly was.

Wrap this up?

Through her sobs, Savina revealed that it had been Parker who had also suffered at the hands of that vile woman. The quiet girl could not have done anything to deserve such treatment. Neither had Denali, and now the poor boy’s life had been cut tragically short for no reason at all. Just for the sick amusement of some twisted individual. Ehno shook his head sadly. Thinking about it made him sick with grief and anger. He could only imagine how terrible that must have been for his sister to discover.

Learning of exactly what wrongdoings the vile woman had committed within their borders only further stoked the embers of that budding anger. If this Nuki was smart, she would be long gone by now. But should that devil ever be foolish enough to show her face anywhere near Crimson Dreams again, she wouldn’t be so lucky to get away a second time. Ehno would personally make sure of that if he had to. No one messed with his family. No one came into their home and then spit on their hospitality by bringing violence upon them. By taking the life of a sweet and innocent boy.

He didn’t want to think about it, and discussing it longer would only serve to further agitate the emotional wounds his sibling was suffering. The male offered his sibling an affectionate lick, amber eyes meeting her tear-clouded emeralds. “I should probably let you rest.” She needed time to heal, both physically and emotionally, and his visit here was likely beginning to get in the way of that.

Sure! We can end here or with another post from you :3

Savina would never forget what had transpired this winter, not for as long as she lived. She had failed her son and had put the lives of the rest of her family and pack at risk by allowing his murderer to seek sanctuary in their quiet home. She held no illusions that the wounds dealt to her the other day would be so easily erased as the ones she had suffered before. They would stand out starkly against her ebony pelt; a testament to her failure and to how far she would go to protect and avenge her family. The Marino matriarch had not given any thought to her own well being. She owed her son a debt that could not be repaid. Nothing could bring Denali back from the lands beyond death. She drew some comfort from knowing she had drawn some retribution from the bitch's hide, but it was not enough to calm her tumultuous conscience.

She could feel the anger radiate from her sibling like a wave of heat in the bitter cold. Her curse may have been her own, but the anger of any Marino was a fierce thing to behold and nothing brought it out more than when their family had been attacked. Savina did not worry about Ehno running out and doing anything foolhardy though, unlike herself. Once upon a time he might have, but time had tempered him and she knew he would remain here to protect them all. The ones she worried about were the young adult sons of their family. Would they run to search Nuki out to try and prove themselves? She prayed they would not, but right now she was sequestered to this room and could advise and stop no one.

He licked her and it provided some spiritual warmth, although it quickly faded. She wanted to deny his words, but she knew he spoke the truth. Her body shivered from trauma, both physical and emotional, and she could feel the need for sleep tugging on her consciousness. "I suppose I should try and sleep some..." The Consul winced as she tried to reach a more comfortable position. Her eyelids drooped as she looked back to her sibling again. "L'amo, il fratello," she whispered softly before her tear-stained eyes closed.
