the truth we can't handle

Set in Killam Library.

"Hmmmmm," Jenkai sighed to himself as he ran his fingers over the dusted spines of the library’s once treasured books. He had come here often in the past year, and had taken countless numbers of books back to his beach house. He had found a bag of sorts that he used when he wanted to carry a dozen books, but he had come with no possessions today. He had a fascination for the humans, and loved reading all sorts of non-fiction books about them. But today he was looking for something different. He had found himself looking at fiction titles.

He stepped over fallen volumes on the floor as he titled his head to the side in order to make out the words. Some looked interesting and others looked too old to even handle. He had had a few fall apart on him, but he tried to preserve them the best he could. Sliding out a book with a black cover, he opened to the first page to reveal the book’s title: Disaster. With a thin grin, he snapped it shut and placed it under his arm, before deciding to head towards the exit.

If he had known his sister better, he would have pulled her over to the Library as soon as he had found it. Unfortunately though, he didn't know where anyone was. He had only managed to pull his bulky frame out of the fires just in time and had escaped a near certain death. "Hello?" He called out quietly as he stepped across the threshold of the seemingly ancient building. Claws made slow noises against the library floor as he peered up and around, drinking in all of the sights with bright and eager blue eyes.

He crossed his hands behind his back, tail twitching slowly behind him almost like a cat's might. So far, he hadn't had much time to explore...he had attempted to track down his family and friends but so far it hadn't gone so well. Maybe he just wasn't trying hard enough or something. He began to hum to himself softly, eyes trailing the row of books trying to see if there was something that sparked his interest.

It was the first time he had shifted since his last day in the library before the fire. He carefully made his way up the decaying stone steps toward the door to a building not unlike the one that had burned to the ground in that this one too had hundreds of books inside. Another library, and implicitly his second home aside from the coast. He hadn't bothered trying to take any of the books he had been reading with him over the mountain as there had been no time, and no logic in risking his own life to do so. Having hoped that he would be able to find another library, he had finally succeeded after several trips of exploration.

As he stepped inside, he had his mind set to finding the books he had not been able to finish yet, but something stopped him from proceeding very far into the building. The scent of two other creatures lingering on the air instantly provoked him to tense his muscles. Two wolves. Though wary, he continued on to the shelves and gazed around for titles that were familiar, and those that seemed interesting. He remained silent, unwilling to draw attention to himself. The hairs on the back of his neck instinctively spring up at the idea of being alone with them, which he found to be a curious thing. Truthfully, he was simply paranoid of everyone.

Woo, I suck.

He was careful to step over the fallen titles, not wanting to damage them any further. It was true; many of the books had been lost to countless years of neglect. Yet Jenkai still held a respect for the ones that were now seemingly just trash. He paused as a row of books trailed out away from him, taking in unfamiliar smells. He wasn’t alone. Squinting into the dusty air, the seafoam green could make out a form just beyond him near one of the exits. He eyed them, wondering if they were one of the wolves that had come over the mountain. Jenkai had talked to a wolf named Hymn who had told him about the recent influx of canines. Somehow he had a feeling this wolf was related to that.

He turned and ventured down the row of books, protected by volumes tucked in shelves on either side. He peered through openings where novels had been extracted but never returned, now able to tell that the wolf was colored a deep brown and that he even had blue eyes. Still, he didn’t think Jenkai had been noticed just yet. He continued his way down the aisle, only to pause when a new feeling danced along his spine. There was someone else, he was sure of it. The scent was different. His stomach shifted. Could this one have ties to the clan Hymn spoke of?
