ooc - Forest of Nod, on the border. Dawn.

Wordcount:: 3+

She hadn't been sleeping properly. There was a restlessness to her mind, a constant shifting of dark secrets and guiltiness that made her unstable and uneasy. It was an uncommon sight to see the hippie girl awake so early, but the cool dark air welcomed her into its embrace. It had been a few days since she had slept decently at all.

She sat beside the border at the base of an old pine, knees tucked beneath ivory and blushed chin, lapis lazuli gazing blindly into a world beyond the seen. There were so many new things to consider in her increasingly claustrophobic world. Her brother - Dark Micah, wonderful Micah - had come to his sisters at last. But at what price? Razekiel remained absent, his name just a phantom whisper between the children of Juniper Peace.

The dark hungry earth of Inferni sapped her dry, but she found herself unable to cross past the borders anymore. The skulls mocked her weakness, and she had tried once - In the sunlight. But her muscles had trembled and faltered, and she had been unable to go. Unable. Not since the night she had met Samael Lykoi had the girl ventured into the land beyond Inferni.

This had other consequences. It had been a fair time now since she had seen the golden-pelted demon known as Itachi. His red eyes, so similar in hue to her uncle's, haunted what little sleep she had. It seemed China's fickle mind was slowly degenerating, and the silver songbird was voiceless, protestless. Nobody realised that she was being eaten away on the inside by such an insidious and invisible foe.

The pale arch of the sun had just begun to kiss the sky, casting arches of soft blue and pink in spears across the gentle navy of retreating night. It was a sight that once would have inspired her to awe and love, to draw the reed pipe from beneath her bandages and play with the trills of awakening birds. But now, her empty palms turned down to the cold earth and grasped fistfuls of dirt, watching the small grains run through her fingers. Run, run, run.

The day was very young, but as always, the warrior of Inferni rose before the golden globe, and it was not at all too early for the clan’s Triarii to wander about, stretching her legs and breathing the frosted air. It always had a sweet taste of morning dew, she thought. There was a comforting calm to be found at this hour that was special to her, magic sparkling in the absence of the awakened world. The borders remained abandoned, just how she preferred it to be. Or perhaps not. But that was no trespasser seated along the lines of weather worn skulls. Halo could not claim that she knew this girl personally, but she definitely knew of her.

One of the hippie children; a cousin. It was good to be related to the majority of the clan, though there was so many that should not have the right to call themselves Lykois. Oh well, there was so little that could be done with the filth. Her own son had fallen deep and his mother hoped that she would never get to see the male again. This young girl with the blushing maw, was she worthy of the royal blue hue running through her young veins? The warrior’s face did not twist into unpleasant lines as it so often did. No, for once she felt only curious. The clan would never be exactly how she wished it to, and it was about time she could make an effort in getting to know the clan’s members before judging.

”You are Raziekel’s daughter, are you not?” she asked, cream painted fingers gently brushing soft auburn locks from her face.

There was something to be said for the woman with the ability to walk as a ghost. Halo Lykoi made no sound on the crispy dew-splattered ground. The woman had been blessed with a predatory grace which surely enabled her a great amount of skill on the battlefield, for even when dazed, a coyote is not an easy creature to startle.

At the sound of the feminine voice, curious but not spiteful, China's body jerked slightly. Her large, elegant ears dipped instantly forward, vague cerulean eyes focusing with narrow pupils on the beautiful creature before her. Another truth - Halo was indeed a beautiful creature, and China had such inexplicable weakness for beauty. A gentle smile framed her somewhat absent expression. "Yes, Triarii," For although they had never met, she knew the other woman well. All members of Inferni did.

Wanting to appear respectful, even though her heart was not in the act, the pretty silver doll rose to her own feet. She steadied herself with one palm against the pine tree, wishing as she did that she might be able to feel the pulse of the Earthmother within it. But no, that door had been closed to her. The old grief bubbled close, showing in the dark shadows beneath her eyes and the hollowness in her smile. The woman's ruby eyes made her uneasy, but they were familiar, and deep within her she was startled to note the pulls of attraction. What of it?! Surely, she had broken this taboo enough to no longer be dismayed at her body's treacherous love for its own kin.

Shaking fingers plucked at the bottom of her denim skirt, wishing she had a lighter to smoke some of the joints rolled in her pockets. "Can I help you?"

The Lykoi could have added slight changes to her posture to express apologies without words for startling the other, but Halo did no such thing. If anything, this could be a small warning to the other that she should not let her mind drift away with thought. Inferni’s borders were well known and to some extent feared, but it did not give them immunity to dangers from the outside. The warrior knew that it was somewhere along the invisible line here that she had been taken, and it had resulted in Itachi, the demon child with unbreakable ties to the demon that once had tried to swallow the clan whole. Nowhere was safe if one did not take precautions.

The girl’s smile was empty, but Halo paid little attention to it. Few would lighten at the warrior’s approach; for she seldom gave anyone reason to enjoy her presence. But she had never talked with this girl one on one, and perhaps today it was time to get to know the doll face a little bit better. Had Halo been younger, she would have envied the girl for her gentle colouration. Kaena was vivid in her features, and there were few she adored and respected more than the Lykoi matriarch. But looks alone would grant her no special treatment. Not that the Triarii assumed that the other would assume such a thing.

The girl affirmed that her guess was correct, that settled the woman’s curiosity. She watched the frailer canine rise in response to her presence, and she was pleased with that. Was the younger female one of the dreaded gentle souls that the clan kept? Halo’s general view on things had not changed much, but she knew that the clan could not exist of strong, capable individuals only. Then again, the true character of any group could be seen in the weaker links, and the thought was sour to dwell on. Words flowed from the other, and the coppery woman’s gaze travelled away from silver and flush.

Her gaze travelled away from home and into the wilderness, but there was nothing to be found there. The expression worn by rubies could have dimmed and turned distant, but Halo would rarely permit herself to become lost in thought. ”No one can help me.” she concluded, the fact stabbing underneath her skin where no one could see how she bleed. Her child was forever gone and his crimes could not be undone. When would a mother’s heart heal?

The weight of such heavy ruby eyes was difficult for the bird-boned girl to bear. Gentle, shallow pools of eggshell blue mirrored the woman's piercing gaze, as though two polar opposites could face eachother on such mortal earth.

Briefly, China wondered if it was possible for her to ever be as strong as the Triarii. That mentally she deemed the other woman 'strong', rather than vicious, overly aggressive or cold, was another sign to show how the girl's insides were cocooning themselves, her inner workings reshaping into a beautiful, horrible butterfly.

The silver songbird's frail smile went unnoticed, but her words did not. To the other woman's heartless reply, the girl seemed to surface from the depths of her vague listlessness. A spark of the true China shone, energetic, in her eyes. "Oh, Lady!" Such a terrible, sweepingly dramatic statement to so blandly make! One blushing hand fell to the bony ridge above her heart, the other showing palm as though to reach for the distanced Halo. "We must have faith. Everybody can be saved, in some way or another; We just have to have faith!" A truth she had to believe, so firmly. Without it, perhaps her entire composition would fall apart - Stitches tearing so that her flesh could fall, finally, into silver ribbons.

She was not the most intelligent of creatures, far too airy to hold true mental substance, as though a soft eastern breeze had been given succulent form. But one trait she did have, impeccably so, was the ability to read emotion. Behind the she-warrior's mask of concrete there was indeed a desolate place, that perhaps had once been made fruitful by the offhanded love for a traitorous son. However, China's lack of intelligence prevented her from making a somewhat obvious connection between Kaena's grandchild, Halo's spawn, and her dark secret.

It was when responding to the coppery Lykoi woman’s words that the silvery creature revealed some colours that the older relative could judge her on. Eyes snapped back to the soft blue shades swirling in the eyes of a dreamer. The lower ranked canine seemed different from her hippie, but not different enough. They seemed to share the general view of the world, the man and his daughters. The blue eyed creature wanted her to have faith, for everyone could be saved. Pile of shit was all it was. ”Oh?” the woman responded, lips pursing as they delivered the word infused with a toxic tone.

There were excuses for such foolish beliefs, but Halo never had much issue with telling others what she thought of them. ”You’re wrong,” she spat. ”You don’t even know what I’m talking about, yet you’re so quick to share your naïve beliefs.” Did this girl and her silly siblings roam around trying to infest other clan members with this naivety? The thought was disgusting, and with the recent issues with the mountain wolf pack and all, the last thing they needed were more weakness to infect and weaken them. Why in the world was this girl still here? The beliefs of her kind did not belong in a place such as this.

The hand that had hovered out towards the ice queen faltered, then slowly fell back to her skirt as a torrent of spite and brittle disgust fell from the slender maw of the woman. Large satellite ears fell back against her crown. China seemed to retreat within herself without moving - Arms hugged tightly to a torso in a defensive posture that was familiar to one with her red eyes.

Halo's voice cracked the air like a whip, and for a moment after the sharp retort, China merely gazed at her with those strangely hollow eyes. Her maw trembled slightly, but she had cried a lot lately, and no tears came. "No," The admittal denial fell from her maw in a slightly trembling tone. Already, the girl was preparing herself for punishment for such retaliation. "No, Triarii, that is... I don't know your pain," Her voice began to gather speed and volume and the hands that held herself together so tightly clenched into little fists. "But see, hope is all there is! It's all there is," A smile now, but it was tense and sharp and ached on her mouth. "Without it, we are dead."

Her trembling ceased immediately as the words bloomed fresh. Oh, how she craved a joint to take away the sharpness of Halo's angles, the growing light that made her eyes wish to blink and close and never open.

She had seen this reaction before, and already her expectations for this conversation had been ruined. It was not the way she had meant to get to know the younger Lykoi relative, but her mouth was a dangerous weapon that could not always control. She was quick to react when the topic touched her personal life. She seemed to bring Itachi into everything lately. It was strange, for in the very start it had not been so incredibly bad, but this was an ache that grew over time; a tumour steadily spreading.

To hear that the young female assumed she was in pain made a frown crack through the beauty of her face. The words of hope continued to flow, and she considered the possibility that the other simply was a little bit dim. She knew nothing more than her life had offered to show her, and perhaps she had just been lucky. She was a young adult now, responsible for her own destiny. It was a shame if she still believed the world was such a pretty place to live in. It was wrong; it was ugly and hideous and everyone had to look out for themselves.

”Perhaps,” Halo admitted, retrieving a sadistic grin to enter her lips. There were grains of truth in her words, but the coyote found it difficult to believe in anything these days. Her son was dead. ”But there are times when your only choice is to wake up and face the fact that that there is no hope...” Halo had floated around in her dream world quite often in her younger days, and it eventually led her to terrible places and terrible people. ”only death,” that was all the poor boy had coming.

The woman smiled, but it was an empty emotion, and China was not deceived. Her harsh words provoked another tremor to race through blue veins and hollow bones. The silver songbird was fading away, but she clung to the strands of belief that Halo seemed so determined to sever. What would happen if she lost her hope? Would the shadows claim her - Would she be able to go to Itachi at last? Eggshell blue eyes flickered away from the handsome woman and out past the line of skulls, seeking the shadow and the luminous bleeding eyes that had found her there last time. Another crack in the mask. Crack, crack, crack.

Slowly, cerulean dragged back to the violent ruby of the Triarii. "I don't want to die," She admitted softly, watching the woman intently. Arms hugged closer to an increasingly skeletal frame, the bones of which were hidden beneath beautiful silver fur. It had been a while since she had eaten last - There was an ache behind her eyeballs, and the ever-present pressure in her ribcage. Food seemed to unappealing. A fragile smile blossomed on blushing maw, and surprisingly, she took a step towards the dangerous female figure. "Hope is what I have left," Another step. She wanted to run her fingers through the woman's fur - Something about Halo Lykoi was familiar in the most basic of ways. "He can't take it from me, and neither can you. I am stronger than that. I could fly away from here."

She was being pessimistic and was well aware of this. A soft sigh rolled out between slightly parted lips and she resisted the urge to shake her head. The girl was young and naïve, but Halo knew there were parts of her that ached to regain some of the innocence that Razekiel’s daughter owned. When the beautiful Triarii looked at the world around her, she saw darkness. She would have given much to let colour back into her life, but she didn’t know how. She was not dead within, but the Lykoi with the scarlet gaze was a withering flower. China had youth and beauty, and Halo only recognized the danger it put the other clan member in.

Halo knew what it was like to cling to hope, but she was tired of watching her existence crumble. Her story was an anguished one, and unfortunate things just kept on invading her life. Self-pity was disgusting. She took no specific notice of the silvery girl stepping closer, for her eyes sought answer that the scenery around them could not provide her with. Eyes closed momentarily, though opened immediately after when the girl spoke again. Who was this he? There were many males in the clan, and the girl’s words didn’t necessarily mean anything at all, but for some reason she reacted anyway. Ruby eyes turned to the young girl, colours so similar to that of Kaena’s.

He?” The rest of the girl’s foolish sentence was ignored. Only children dreamt of flying, and the girl remained idealistic and dreamy.

It was obvious that the women held little regards for her ambitions of spiritual flight. Perhaps Halo Lykoi was simply unable to recognize the concept of freedom as air-born innocence - Perhaps her feet had been standing in the mud for too long. She must be strong, China assumed in the absent way that befitted her, so strong to had withstood the pull of that mud. The girl had been in it for such a short time now, but already she could feel herself succumbing to the drag, feel it seeping into every pore of her being.

A laconic sigh greeted the woman's sharp question, posed by only one mirrored word. Now it was her turn to look away, far away - Through time and space together. Perhaps sleep deprivation was finally getting to her brain. "Yes, he," She spoke calmly, as though the insane babble of before had been totally logical, and Halo was somewhat thick not to understand it, "The one with the bleeding eyes, you know. I don't-" A frown pulled over the porcelain doll's features, like storm clouds rolling in after the lull, "I don't want to talk about him anymore." The hand that had reached for Halo returned to hugging her aching torso closer. She shook her head, as if to clear the strange haze from between her ears. "He brings pain, only that. Nothing more."

A silence fell over the warmly shaded woman. The waters were still, but beneath a tranquil surface, a leviathan lurked. Halo had no reason to embrace this sudden suspicion. The guesses swelling in her cold mind wouldn’t be correct and match the truth, but winter started to rage beneath her warm skin. Bleeding eyes. While this did not get the lady very far, it seemed to bring sufficient facts on the table. Halo followed the trail laid out by paranoia, and her mind was stumbling closer to the truth by mere chance. Samael’s red and a rapist’s purple collided in Halo’s son’s toxic gaze, and in that sense they could be referred to as bleeding. She did not want to believe this, and trusted that deep down she was wrong in her assumption. She knew she often was too quick to jump to conclusions.

The silver and rose fool said she did not want to speak of him anymore, but she was not the one to make the decisions here. While China’s blushing hand withdrew, Halo throw out one painted in copper and eggshell cream, fingers grasping for the retreating wrist dressed in the unique, ochre shade. ”Tell me his name!” she demanded, feeling a dangerous steam endanger her sanity. Yes, the boy had brought pain to his family, and the mother was standing left with nothing but the seething feeling of failure. Oh, she was not innocent, but the child had never been hers. It was the product of the blue eyed demon’s son and had been an abomination from the very start.

Her desperate return to self-inclosure was denied. A coffee and cream hand had lunged out, and hard fingers now wrapped hard about the girl's slender blushing wrist. It was a hold that was familiar, too familiar, and the fear surged deep in her stomach. Wide, crystalline-blue eyes looked to the mother's possessed red, seeking a mercy she would not find. All China wanted was to retreat into the cold dark spaces of her own mind, but Halo urged her to remember.

Remember she did, and it was horrible. The porcelain doll's face twisted into a chasm of what was clearly pain, although no tears came. She felt too empty for that.

The other woman seethed, and her voice was powerful where China's was weak. The girl trembled pathetically, because her body remembered. "You know his name," She whispered softly, and a strange sharpness came to eggshell blue. A bark of laughter pulled from between ivory teeth, but it was sickly. "You know them both, Halo Lykoi! One came from you, and you came from the other!" She laughed again, harder now, and her body shook more. The sound was sharp and shocking.

It stopped as suddenly as it had begun. The hand with captured wrist tensed and became a fist. "I love your son. I love Itachi Lykoi." Then the dizziness overcame her, and China lurched sideways and vomited.

Halo Lykoi was certainly able to express compassion, but that was a side of her that so precious few ever would get a glimpse of. China was quickly climbing up on the list in the warrior’s black book. The sudden sharpness of everything she now received from the finely built little bird did not leave the older female’s face untouched. Scarlet hues widened while the dark of the pupil shrank until mere pinpoints lost in a violent sea of crimson. China’s laughter tore at the sub-leader’s throat, growing fangs and claws and grinning wickedly at the unprepared woman.

Names had yet to rise in the stunned woman’s brain when her son’s name was spoken out aloud. A step was taken away from the silvery canine as she lurched away and vomited. Disgusting. The pulse was sharp against the coppery woman’s chest, and reminded her that she was alive despite everything the world decided to throw at her. Samael and Itachi? China Lykoi loved Itachi Lykoi. A family member was in love with an inbred traitor. Her stomach’s content turned and twisted, and she almost followed China’s reaction.

But there was a more prominent need stepping forth, and Halo followed this impulse gladly. Halo cared little to give China a chance to regain her composure before she stepped forward with a closed fist, so eager to destroy the pretty you face in hues of silver and deceitful innocent blush. ”Fucking whore!” Samael and Itachi. What a disgusting little devil resided within this innocent looking body. She would fucking claw off this bitch’s face for such sinful deeds. Her fist targeted the girl’s face, but that was far from enough. Halo was coming for her now, pouncing at the fragile looking female with that ill content screaming in the red shades of her eyes.

It felt as though her insides were torn out, clearly and cleanly, and she was light and hollow like the fletching in a feather. Nothing existed beyond this physical feeling of impurity - There were no lingering scars between her thighs, deeper where wicked claws had forced her knees apart. No memories that surges in the shadows of the daytime, creeping at her from a smile or a word. There was only China, and China's withering body, as it sought an equilibrium deprived by the beginnings of starvation and insomnia.

The purging felt good, and she would have liked to have shown that to the warrior woman with the bleeding eyes - such an intense hue, so stimulating, just like the purple-rimmed gore of her son - But sweetly formed face lifted only to meet with the knuckles of one fist.

Her head whipped back at the connection, and pain blossomed, a ripe pain that hadn't been truly felt for some time now. Blood that had moved sluggishly through blue veins was prompted to race, as deeply buried instincts surged to the hollow bird bones, forcing the lovely scarecrow into action. The force of Halo's punch was more than enough to sprawl the girl's light, weak frame back onto the earth; an earth that rejected her even now, bruising delicate ribs with its hard cold surface.

But as the woman came at her again, China's long legs moved, knees drawing up to her chest and feet aiming to interrupt the warrior's lunge, possibly even deflect. There was no room in her mind for such thoughts, though - A ragged breath was drawn deep, just enough to allow a sharp, almost hysterical yelp to spill forth. "Please!" A pitiful echo, one she had once begged mercy with from the woman's own father. Samael had not relented, and the bird was broken now.

What this girl needed was a warm embrace given by someone who knew well of the filthy feeling lingering beneath flesh that had been touched and soiled by the cruelty of a mad man, but Halo’s mind knew not of mercy. All she knew was the sick contentment as her fist connected with the fair willow’s face. A sweet pain caressed her angry knuckles, but it felt so good. The air was fouled by the spilled content from the younger female’s stomach. Halo should have known better, for the signs were there for the eye to see, but she was a foolish girl that could only see the broken content of her partly miserable life. China had added fresh misery and would pay dearly for it.

It was with satisfaction she watched the silvery canine fall, and an ill willed smile almost approached to the enraged angel’s face. The girl’s feet sought to shield against the physical outburst, but Halo was relentless. Drawing her angry fists back, she shifted tactic and started to use a clawed foot instead. ”Filthy little whore!” the mad woman spat, feeling her own stomach twist and turn as images started to appear behind her eyes. Filthy, FILTHY little thing!

There was a possessed glint to Halo's maddened eyes, the deep poisonous ruby seeping through China's fragile exterior and burning her from the inside out. There was such hatred there, luminous and powerful, and the silver songbird instantly withered away from it.

Her left eye was swelling where the warrior's fist had molested it - knuckled had scraped at a delicate brow-spot, and a trickle of blood oozed in tentative slow motion through perfect, silky fur. Pupils dilated to needle points of livid fear, lost to an ocean of tumultuous cerulean blue.

The downed girl's instantaneous defensive reaction seemed to have dissuaded the hazardous mother from following her down and clawing out her eyeballs, but it left her open to a kick from the Triarii's wretched foot. The first blow struck her hard in the ribs, and with a yelp China rolled over onto her stomach, clutching her sides as if to ward off the following blow. This kick scored her straight in the abdomen. A gurgling sound pulled from the beautiful girl's bloodied maw, ending in a listless moan.

There were no words left in her, nothing but the blind seeking of an end to this terrible punishment. She would flee tonight, flee to the mountains and the arms of her strange once-lover, the traitorous blackblood Itachi Lykoi. His mother's beating would not be revealed to the pale-pelted prince, perhaps out of an instinctual fear for the continued wrath of Halo.

With her tail clinging between her legs, the pitifully broken girl moaned helplessly, awaiting further pain as a strange but soothing numbness swelled through her.

While his shoulder did not allow for constant patrols, he still made his way into the forest for solitude. Gabriel moved like an earthen shadow in the forests he knew so well, as much a part of them as they were to him. Only gleaming yellow eyes betrayed him, hell-fire in the pre-dawn light. He enjoyed the stillness of the world and would have been content to walk in this way until his shoulder screamed, but it was not his body he heard first. It was a woman’s voice, and a high-pitched yelp that was not wolfish in its nature.

Gabriel ran despite the pain in his shoulder, and he ran with terror because he feared what he would find. Halo was standing over the crumpled form of one of Razekiel’s daughters, the blue-eyed one, and before the Aquila knew what he was doing fury boiled into his blood. This was not the first time he had found his niece attacking a clan-member. Eris had been the first; now he wondered if there had been others.

He let out a blood-curdling bellow: HALO, STOP! Was the command issued, and teeth bared, Gabriel threw himself over the child.

       No.

But there were teeth and burning amber, and though he did not have her unique hue of fire in his own eyes, she knew she could be burnt. Her claws and the anger they brought could not touch the girl now, and so instead dug into her palms as she abruptly stepped back as Gabriel stepped in like a wall of flesh to protect the unfaithful whore. Wide, bloodied eyed stared at her leader without comprehension. Surely Gabriel had to understand that China needed to paint the ground beneath them dark red to pay for the sins she had committed.

You protect her? her twisted voice asked, body twitching involuntary with the bottled anger that so wanted to continue to lash out. White teeth glared at the man that denied her to deal out the punishment the girl so sorely needed. ”DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT SHE HAS DONE!?” FUCK. Her son and her father, she had had them both and she had laughed. She was twisted and wrong and Halo had to exterminate this sinful creature just as she had failed to exterminate the two men she had fucked. ”SHE’S A FUCKING WHORE FUCKING MY FAMILY!” Red glistening finger pointed to the whore he shielded. Surely he had to understand!

She crouched slightly, the pain in her chest refreshed as the world had been slung out on top of a voice beyond hysterical. It would always be unthinkable to harm Gabriel, but she couldn’t deny the lust for the girl’s blood. It sang in her sensitive nostrils, and she wanted more. Bloodied fingers flexed hungrily as she truly considered trying to go for an opening and harm China further.

It was ignorance that led him to protect her. Ignorance that Gabriel was now seeing Halo sought to wipe away. He listened, but he did not move from his position above China’s battered body. Amber eyes glowed with fury, darkening to a color that could almost border red. The Aquila bared his teeth and raised his tail high.

“You have punished her enough,” he said firmly, leaving no room for argument. “I will speak with her when,” if “, she recovers. Do not touch her again, Halo. Leave us.” Though he saw the battle rage in the red-eyes of his second-in-command, Gabriel was pleased to see her retreat. The Aquila called for Enkiel, who came quickly to aid the broken bird. While the jackal patched up her wounds, Gabriel warned her in plain terms that the path she walked was a dangerous one. China seemed to understand, but her eyes were cloudy when she spoke, and Gabriel knew it was not the end.
