A New Kind of Song

predated for the 19th <3

The sable feline was residing in one of his favorite places - Halifax. He wasn't in the library today, although he had been a few moments ago; his mouth began to slaver, reminding him that he was quite hungry. He had slipped out of the crack in the door that was just wide enough for his skinny body to fit through and went searching through the abandoned city to look for some lunch. In no time he had found a small mouse wandering the city, a piece of paper clamped between its jaws; in a swipe and a crunch, it was gone.

Now satiated, Element sat poised on the edge of a fence. His eyes closed, he was the epitome of calm, his exterior relaxed and - what was that?

Cupped ears swiveled forward as Element heard a faint.. singing? He had heard singing from songbirds and singing from the wind moving through the trees; those songs didn't have a lot of melody, but they still filled Element with wonder. But this singing... was different. It had a melody, yes, but it wasn't quite like the songs he was used to - this voice, as he knew it was a being rather than a couple of birds trying to woo each other or the wind dancing through the hollows - this voice was high and pure, and, at this point, Element was almost certain it belonged to a female Luperci.

He kept his eyes closed, but continued to listen; soon, he heard the other types of songs, too - birds? Opening his mouth and wrinkling his nose as to scent whatever was following this girl, he realized that she was near birds. Who was this person..?

+3. Why do you build me up~

It was no secret that the young girl liked to sing, but it still surprised quite a few when the melody that drifted into the air also drew creatures of all kinds to her.

Yet another song, coursing with runs of 'Ahhs' and 'Ooohs' instead of particular lyrics, found its way through Giselle. On this glorious day, she found herself heading to a different location, clothed in her short, buttercup colored garment. There was always something new to each day, and it seemed that 'Elle's wonder knew no end as she reached the destroyed city, nature long-since taking its grasp upon it. Upon seeing it on the horizon, it looked dreary, and in the girl's mind she believed there was nothing like the power of song to brighten everything up - even for a moment.

As the soft vocals hit the air, birds of all kinds seemed to draw near, and even perch upon the pale girl's arms and shoulders (much to the dismay of the stoat, who was forced to walk on the ground). They twittered along with her, and the young girl lost her sense of direction as she found herself among the ruined city. Engrossed in the repetition of several vowels, Giselle was unaware of a silent follower from among the shadows, walking along a rickety fence. She stopped, however, when the quiet stalker was noticed nearby and caused a few birds to fly away. "Oh no, please don't go dear friends!" Her tone of voice was laced with a childlike disappointment, turning her head to look around for the frightening source.

Just as her bright eyes settled upon the creature that was following her, a few feet away, Tux darted quickly into Giselle's leather satchel, his head visible as his threatening shrills filled the air. It frightened the girl, at first, attempting to settle her companion down. "Oh, it's just a kitty cat~" She remarked, kneeling down and urging the adorable black creature towards her. "What are you doing out here all alone? It's okay, I won't hurt you." Her tone was soft, comforting, smiling in the cat's direction upon the fence as her dainty fingers pat the ground before her.

The black cat watched as, emerging from the shadows of the city, came a luperci woman; she was a light creamy white color, accented with shades of brown. Her hair was a deep auburn, gleaming red against the sun. She had various birds circling her of all types, something Element found strange, as usually birds were afraid of predators of all kind. He couldn't help but feel that this was justified, however, as the woman's voice was pure and attractive to any species, it seemed, as he spotted a small stoat on her shoulder, glaring at him warily.

The woman eventually spotted him, and she smiled with delight, rushing towards him. He flattened one ear, but said and did nothing - this girl was obviously not a threat. She demonstrated that later on, when she outright told him that she wouldn't hurt him. He knew that she wouldn't , but was nonetheless appeased by her reassurance - most of the time, canines either ignored the small black cat, in which case he would respond in kind, look threateningly at him, in which case he usually ran away, or try to talk to him, in which case he also responded in kind. This female seemed to be in the latter category. She said a few things, and asked him why he was there all alone; he answered in kind:

"I live here, ma'am," he said coolly. "My name is Element. And yours?"

Quick reply before work! WC: 308

The black cat before her looked as if someone owned it - its pelt was sleek and shiny, and didn't look at all a stray. But it had no type of identification around its neck, not even one of those jingly bells that she often read cats wearing. It was a remarkable creature, and its eyes were none the less stunning as it watched Giselle crouch down and reassure it.

What caught her by mild surprise, though, was that it spoke. A sharp intake of breath was how she first responded, clasping a hand over her mouth. She remained low to the rough cobblestone ground, bright dress splayed out around her, staring wide eyed at the cat. "Y-you.. you can talk!" Surprise turned into glee quickly, and the excitement made 'Elle jump to her feet. Tux found his way out of his caretaker's bag, and took a few steps towards the cat in curiosity, but did nothing else. He still felt on edge about the strange animal, and kept his guard. The pale girl's eyes sparkled in mirth, doing the same as her companion had in step. She almost wanted to hug the lone cat, when he mentioned he lived here on his own, but did not want to spook the creature that could speak her language.

"Oh, where are my manners~" She piped up in a lyrical tone, noticing she had been staring at the animal. Looking into the creature's dazzling emerald eyes, she gave a bright smile. "I'm Giselle, and this here is Tux." A moment's silence passed, until the young princess could stand waiting no more, and let the begging question slip from her lips. "How are you able to speak my language?" For a moment, she wondered if others that encountered the cat had asked the same question, but Giselle's curiosity knew no bounds.

It seemed that this was one of the people who weren't used to talking cats, Element thought as the woman gasped sharply and clasped her hand over her mouth, clearly shocked that the feline could speak her language. She then stuttered a bit, confirming what he had thought, and then asked where her manners were, introducing herself as Giselle. He peered closely at the strange creature that she called Tux - he wasn't sure what it was. Its body was long, almost like a very fat snake covered in fur, and with small legs. Its face was long, and its eyes were small and beady; it reminded him of a cross between a fox and a squirrel, maybe.

The inevitable question then came, and Element did his best to be amiable, switching his curious green gaze from the odd foxsquirrel to Giselle, who was looking at him expectantly. "Well," he said, "I grew up learning both the High Speech - that's what you're speaking - and the Low Speech, which is what most other non-carnivorous mammals speak. The Low Speech is more of a feeling, or an instinct, while the High is a distinct dialect that you can speak with words. I learned both because of my ties as a small mammal and my lineage, which includes many large, carnivorous cats," he finished. His mother had always thought that the High Speech was far more useful than the Low, but he had learned the Low Speech from various animals that he was around, deer and other wolf-prey animals not out of the question.

Just as the feline creature settled its eyes on the stoat on the hard ground, he too blinked up at the sly, black animal. Tux narrowed his beady eyes at it when their eyes met, as if expecting it to jump down from the fence and attempt to eat him. The chocolate weasel stood on its hind legs, then, puffing out his chest and looking as challenging as a stoat could get. However, it disappeared when he was scooped up by dainty hands, as Giselle knelt down to pick him up when the cat began its explanation.

It was as if this cat had popped out of a book - he spoke with as much intellect as the printed words themselves. She dared take a step closer to the cat, with interest, and saw how shiny his coat was in the little sunlight that the abandoned city offered. "Yes, I read about low speech in one of my books, when papa wasn't looking. It's how I'm able to speak with Tux~" As the stoat had a realization they were speaking about him, he got a little taller in Giselle's hands. With a finger she ruffled the fur on the top of his head.

"Element, why do you live here? Doesn't it get lonely?" The question was a curious one - it almost reminded her of herself, secluded in a cottage in the forest with her papa. Of course, she did not deem that as wrong, as her papa only wanted to protect her, but it was lonely. She had given up her exploration of the city to talk to a cat, but the enchanted creature seemed far more interesting than a ruined city that would remain there forever.

Large, sparkling eyes could not shake themselves from how soft the animal's coat looked, and it captivated her to come even closer to the cat on the fence. She almost didn't wait for a response to her question, and with a free hand she reached towards the cat. Giselle withdrew her for a moment, still suspended in the air, and looked into the talking creature's dazzling green eyes. "Oh, may I?" Her inquiry was to pet the cat, with a bright smile lighting up her white face. However, the girl had to keep her manners in check, especially since she was in the presence of not just any animal, but a smart one.

xDD giselle is so cute

The feline saw as the strange foxsquirrel raised itself up on its hind legs, and it looked now more like a furry snake than anything. Element quirked one ear backwards, trying to make sense of this odd creature, but before he could do anything about it, the white wolf picked her companion up again and took a step closer to him; he could tell that she was still fascinated by his abilities with speech. He had known canines that were, but usually they took the revelation in stride after a few words had been exchanged. This one had a more naive air about her, as if she were younger, although he knew that she was by no means a pup. He shrugged it off, and considered her words as she asked if living in Halifax alone was lonely.

"Cats prefer to live alone, usually," he said shortly, "And I don't mind that in the least." It was true - although he missed Flower so much that his heart ached, that was more of a longing for his old companion and love back. Element, for all the emotions that he'd felt in his life, had never, not once, felt the emotion of loneliness; he was a cat, after all, and they were creatures that sought out solitude most of the time. If anything, he felt a bit crowded, with all the canines visiting Halifax; there were a lot of them, he had discovered after only a few months in Nova Scotia, although he didn't mind that... much.

"People do come to visit the library, which is the building I live in, to get books, however," he tacked on as an afterthought to the woman. Then the subject changed as soon as it had been brought up, and she asked hesitantly if she may - he was confused for a moment before he noticed that while he had pondered, the woman had raised her hand half-way towards Element, her eyes on his silky coat and full of longing. He didn't mind if she did pet him - he loved to scratch himself on trees and assumed that it would feel much of the same anyway.

"Be my guest," he said with a twinge of humor.

The pale princess took in the cat's words briefly, on the subject of living alone. She didn't quite understand how anyone, creature or otherwise, could stand to live by themselves. Giselle herself longed for company constantly, and had she not had Tux by her side during her travels after papa's death, she would not only have been terribly lonely, but lost in the world as well.

Words about the library went through one cream-tipped ear and out the other, as 'Elle could no longer contain her curiosity of the cat's black coat. When given permission by the cat with a strange twist in his voice, her pale hand reached out to touch the gentle coat of night. The touch was gentle, at first, feeling nothing but silk under her hands, as if she were touching the night sky itself. Pale blue eyes glittered in mirth, and soon Giselle could not contain the giggle that slipped from her lips, as if a child were touching an animal for the first time.

Tux, by now, had hopped onto the fence itself, for he knew what his caretaker was capable of. He did not care to be dropped again, knowing she'd forget that he held him, and so stood with careful paws upon the fence to the left of the cat, facing it. His beady eyes rolled at seeing the attention the white girl gave to the animal, but knew her attention would waver soon.

And it had, as Giselle scratched the animal from back, to chest, around the neck, and back up along the creature's spine again. With her curiosity satiated, she drew her gentle hands back and clapped them together at Element's previous statement. "A library? How lovely! Oh, I'd love to see it~" As she said this, she twirled in place, her shadow dancing upon the cobblestone ground. Whatever reason Giselle had come to the abandoned city was forgotten, and now she merely wanted to follow the magical talking cat to its home.
